I have some in the garden and they better stay in there.

    Do they bite?

Slow worms don’t bite, not humans anyway.

Only adders are venomous, and even they probably wouldn’t do much harm to a healthy adult.

Caller display – ~£2.50 per month with BT and TPS should do it. Then you can ignore anyone you (don’t) like!

Fabulous little creatures. Only picked these up to rehome them, as we had already rehomed their parents and then found these.

Moved them down to the riverbank at the bottom of the garden and they haven’t come back. We would have loved to leave them be, but were afraid the neighbours would go ‘eeeuuu, snake’, and kill them.

They’ve traveled 6000 miles to nest here (and don’t they return to the same nest sites every year?) and you want to prevent them.

You, sir, are a first class ****.

Revolting though that is, it may just serve to put people off voting for them as a protest vote in the forthcoming elections…

    Excellent pictures, Zokes!

    Here’s a few of mine:

    Common Spotted Orchid

    Bird’s-nest Orchid

Could really use some help identifying this one!

    Greater Butterfly Orchid

    Early Purple Orchid

    Burnt Orchid

    Knapweed Broomrape (I’m pretty sure)

Sorry if they’re a bit big!

I did not mean to imply any lack of respect for any other squadron – of any command – or for any of the other forces… Sorry if anyone got that impression from my post!

It was just that it was that particular anniversary.

Yes, CFH, apparently Gibson was a little stroppy, but what a guy.

    Going to the pub!

To me its important to think about these things.

Been to Guy Gibson’s grave in Holland. Very moving. They were REAL heroes.

Seems a little surprising. Doesn’t look like a recent ad anyway, given that it appears to be a film camera as opposed to a digital one…

Recommended! Got to PADI Advanced and haven’t dived for years for a variety of reasons.

PADI Open Water is only a five day course anyway and can obviously be done entirely in this country. You could find a school which will do your pool and classroom work in this country and then allow you to do the open water dives abroad, then you don’t waste three days of your holiday in the classroom…

That’s what I would do if I were doing it over again.

Plenty of gaps on my CV due to being between contracts.

Never been a problem, but I guess it depends on your line of work.

    Good luck!

I have just read the FO advice, and then compared it with Greece and Belgium, countries we do know well.

The FO are not very complimentary about Greece or Belgium, either, and we’ve never had a moment’s trouble in either.

Admittedly the advice about Turkey is a little stronger but it would be interesting to hear what those countries have to say about security and safety in the UK… I’d wager it wouldn’t be very complimentary!

There was a Carol Service this year in Salisbury Cathedral? We haven’t even got as far as the Summer Solstice!

Will try the Three Cups: is it on the High Street?

Rachel is indeed charming. As are the people who own and run Caviste!

Not to mention The Greyhound in Stockbridge… And The Peat Spade gets good write-ups… Of course The Greyhound in Overton is our local – always good. In fact, just returned from there now!

Back to Salisbury: Cathedral Close, Mompesson House, Old Sarum all good

    The traffic’s mad though.

CFH – you forgot to mention Caviste wine merchants in Stockbridge: surely you buy your wine there? Lovely place, and really nice people running it!

Of course we have their HQ down the road (literally, about 300 yds) from us, so we don’t need to travel that far (except for the pleasure of visiting Stockbridge). Or perhaps you have your wine delivered?

Late Mk 1 Passat. Went well, handled well, went on for ages. Lovely car. Didn’t sell it, had to scrap it as it was on its last legs.

Also loved our 1.8 Mk2 Golf, but it had to go as the gearbox was playing up.

Do love our current cars though: 1.8T Octavia and 1.8 Passat.

Yeah, I reckon she’s about 1930s chic. Streamlined, retractable undercarriage, fast: nice!

    Haven’t seen one for years.

Was that CFH turning up for a snack over the road?

Sadly, though, it suits our national mentality – seething anger and dispropotionate frustration at small things.

I am angry and frustrated about the big things as well…

Will be checking with the VAT ofice – assume this is the same as HMRC these days?

This is a business-to-private individual transaction, so your second assumption would be correct.

Bit light on paperwork, sadly. No Ts and Cs sent or anything.

With the benefit of hindsight etc!

    Thanks KINGTUT.

I think you might be right. Quite possibly Trading Standards, HMRC and the police it is then!

    @KINGTUT

Stupidly (oh so very stupidly, although this company is slightly known to us) we did it in a rush and accepted a verbal quote which was £xxxx. There was no mention of VAT until we got the invoice, and there is no VAT registration number on the invoice (or anywhere else).

I have been told that a company is required to quote a VAT inclusive price when dealing with a private individual… I don’t know if anyone can confirm this (obviously I can’t get to the CAB right now but will be checking with a lawyer or trading standards or the CAB when I can get there).

They have also threatened to come round and rip out what they have installed without any regard to what damage they might do, which was very interesting to the police (but that’s another story)
