@deadkenney Need server side stuff… Custom built CMSs etc, plus it’s a bit of a showcase for me as I’m a developer. Who seems to have a bit of a dilemma!

Don’t really want the faff of having to move all my sites. That said, how much faff is it…?

Thanks for the excellent reply Gary!

I’m off to read those links.

I thought that GoDaddy (and many other hosts) must have come up against the issue but speaking to GoDaddy’s support team you would think that it was something new to them.

Yep, being told to buy something new. Asshats.

Thanks sharkbait- interesting thoughts. I had wondered about that myself but I have six months to run on my hosting package and this is a really basic problem (in a techie sort of way…)

Just having a bit of a Twitter conversation with them at the mo, too.

We’ll see how this turns out…

“”the w123 vacuum locking had one major design flaw over all the later systems, it used engine vacuum stored in a tank, needing to be entirly leak tight to work. even just a tiny air draw would exhaust the vac tank over night, meaning unlocking next day would not work. later systems, eg w124, used a vacuum/pressure pump that ran when the vacuum/pressure was needed, and so could cope with considerable leaks and still work.

the place to start with yours is under the bonnet. at the o/s bulkhead you will see various vacuum pipes. the two yellow ones are for the locking system. one is yellow with a black trace – this goes to a vacuum storage tank at the rear. the other pipe is plain yellow and this goes to the valve in the driver’s door.

when the drivers door is locked or unlocked it moves the piston in the valve. you will note that the other two pipes connected to the valve are yellow/red and yellow/green. the red trace denontes the locking circuit and the green trace denotes the unlocking circuit.

from your drivers door the pipes then go to a junction point under your drivers foot mat, near the o/s of this area under a plastic duct. this is the easiest place to isolate seperate parts of the circuits for diagnostic purposes. you will note that each of the two pipes coming from the driver’s door branch into three seperate pipes, one goes across the chassis to feed the n/s doors through a further junction in the passenger footwell, one goes to feed the o/s/r door, the other feeds the fuel flap and boot/tailgate. note there are two pipes to every lock mechanism, but on later models the filler cap has only a locking pipe.

this job is all about following the vacuum through the system, starting at the one way yellow valve and two pipes under the bonnet and working back. you would not usually remove the drivers door valve, rather testing the system and blanking off parts to trace leaks. it is best done with a vacuum gague/pump, such as a mytivac, but can be done with no special tools at all, just some golf tees to blank off the pipes.

usual causes are leaking diaphragms and boots on door cells, and now they are getting very old we see cracked pipes too. it may be as simple as the pipe at the front being disconnected or the one way valve being broken. the main vacuum feed is from a grey pipe connected to the intake manifold. this will also feed purple pipes for the head light level adjusting and possibly some other features – can’t remeber, it’s been a while!!

I turned a builder away who turned up in a brand new merc van without a quote as his prices would be to high for me as I know how much they cost.

How very odd. By this logic you wouldn’t get into a Mercedes taxi, despite the fact that the driver may well have saved up to buy something that will be reliable, not spend days in the workshop and will get his / her passengers to their destination safely.

Said builder will also presumably be able to turn up to do his job as he has a reliable van. Additionally, if he appreciates good quality workmanship in his transport he may well provide good quality workmanship himself.

You deserve a Trabant as a taxi.

@CFH Yes, the Merc is doing nicely, thank you. Tickover almost completely sorted out by new plugs so now very useable. Trip to the the Revival went perfectly.

Looking forward to taking her to the continent some time.

Oh, and possibly a ’56 Bentley Continental DHC by Mulliner Park Ward.

That might be the one that was up for auction at Goodwood at £895k or so. Expensive tastes, CFH! (But I think we knew that).

I had an ingrowing toenail and couldn’t do PE. The teacher didn’t like the fact that I didn’t take part and put all the gym equipment away and asked if I thought it fair that all the kids who were doing the work should stamp on my toe… Didn’t happen, but he seemed like a sadistic git!

I did have some brilliant teachers as well, for the record. Robert Evans-Teush, John Crosby, Dave Scott and an English teacher whose name escapes me, sadly (he was a prisoner on the Burma-Siam Railway and must have found A Town Like Alice a very hard book to teach), please take a bow.

Flew over mid Hampshire pretty low about 30 minutes ago. Probably the last time I’ll ever see it flying, then.

Or buy fillet steak. Get pan smoking put said fillet steak in pan on one side, count to 10 and turn over, count to 10 again and serve.

Recipe not recommended for those who don’t like their steak still mooing/capable of walking off the plate…I may also be understating the cooking time (or overstating it…)

DISCLAIMER: this may or may not be safe/healthy…quite possibly not in fact.

Absolutely fine. Sounds quite long enough.

I like to have a bite of my steak before it goes in the pan. Delicious.

Hugo Boss wearing style gurus – is it okay for a chap of 37 to wear Adidas shell-toes (some of which may be Star Wars themed) as part of his work semi-formal outfit?

    No

My A4 goes wwwahwwwahwwwah from the back end and I have ‘stepping’ on my rear tyres (Michelin – brilliant tyres, stick very well).

That said, the rear tyres are still good after almost 30000 miles so not really a problem.

Tracking and wheel bearings have been checked and it’s neither of those. The noise is not loud and doesn’t worry me and obviously doesn’t wear the tyres out overly quickly so I’m not spending money trying to find the issue.

CFH – the only negatives against the XC90 (I drive one and love it) are fuel economy (30-38mpg) and tyre wear (15k for fronts, max 20k)

Mpg and tyre wear sound fine to me. (A dream, in fact…)

I don’t recall much reticence from a man who ‘happened to be sporting les pantalon rouge’ on a thread about ‘meat socks’, CFH…

Walking trousers are for walking. End of.

Now for casual but comfortable and smart, a nice pair of red, green or orange trousers (M&S have a good range) will be fine.

Just bought a pair of braces from M&S, actually – specifically for the Goodwood Festival of Tweed, but they will get lots of use, I’m sure.

One I should have walked out of (after punching the interviewer)

Him If you don’t sell enough how would you feel about me taking away your chair?

Me Well I’m sure that wouldn’t happen

Him But if it did and then we sellotaped the phone to your hand?

At this point the punching should have started.

Another time I went for an interview and the girl doing the interview turned up and said ‘I’m glad they told me that I was interviewing or I wouldn’t have dressed up’

She looked like a rag bag and I emailed the company when I got home telling them how unprofessional I thought they were. Didn’t get the job – but when my CV was sent there a second time they said that I had a point but didn’t want to interview me anyway.

I was also turned down for a job for being too enthusiastic – could have done the job standing on my head. I guess the interviewer was afeared for his own job…

I asked for a telephone interview before one face to face as I suspected that I wasn’t the right person for the role – again, no dice. I realised that I wasn’t the right person for the role in about five minutes and asked for travel expenses form the company. Again, no dice. Funnily enough they started doing telephone interviews shortly after that…

Walked out of a contract having been asked to sort out a fundamental failing on their part on my own time.

There really are some asshats out there – but on the other hand there are some very good interviewers and managers out there too. It’s just a case of sorting the wheat from the chaff – and that’s what interviews (and conversations with agencies) are for.

Don’t know anything about WP or whether you can do any programming with it, but a simple question like ‘What is the opposite of cold?’ and a textbox for the answer might sort it out.

Alternatively could you generate two random numbers and require the sum to be entered into a text box.

Both of these assume some sort of registration process, obviously.

Simple, but spam bots shouldn’t be able to get past it…

There is a disused airfield at Wisley. Frankly the land would be better used for housing and it’s near the A3/M25 so decent transport. Right now it’s just scrub, it will never be an active airfield again. There is also an old grass airstrip at Hamble which I flew from 35 years ago with the ATC, it’s been closed for years. It needs to be used for something.

FFS, do you want to build on EVERY green space this country has to off?

And HTF would all that extra traffic get in and out of Hamble? It’s bad enough as it is.

I’m ceasing to care what happens in this ****hole of a country as more and more people want to build on more and more of it. You are all welcome to the cesspit of a place that you would make it – not that it isn’t already…

Some surprisingly good mtbing around the Spa area. Did some good xc and also look up Malmedy Apollinaire dh, spent a full morning on the dh trails there, they were really rather ace. One of those places I know I’ll never return to (because:no reason) but I am really quite sad about that.

Plenty of reasons to go to Spa! Some nice hotels, good walking in the woods above the town, Monschau is not far, the Falls of Coo are lovely (and Plopsa Coo is right next door), Stavelot Abbey is a great place to visit, some excellent restaurants, Aachen is not far.

We love Spa – have stayed three times so far and trying to figure out when next we can get there!
