I’d not be surprised, because I think I recognise the mortar firing clip from something I saw earlier today, of an ex sniper and combat medic from Princess of Wales Regiment who’s gone out there to train Ukranian Territorials in field medicine. He was claiming to have trained 500 people over the last 4-5 days with another 300 more by the end of the week.

    £350+vat.

Because you got some sort of deal on the servicing when you bought it.

Plenty of mildly damaged bumpers get “repaired” rather than the whole bumper cover being replaced, especially on low value insurnce repairs. I think they call it “plastic welding”.

Its of two things. Either its land woned by church, or some other estate and its simply a feature of the place, in which case theres not really an issue, and it’s largely historical.

Or a newish build, where the developers, simply to make extra cash, didnt include the freehold, in which case, good general advice is to run away.

Political bullying of the anti brexiter, by the tories who rather perversely refuse to anything about bullying by their own ministers.

You decide if this just looks vindictive, petty, and bacially, conservative values in action.

Meanwhile, we’ve all forgotten Sue Gray, PartyGate, the Williamson Lordship, the Lebdev Lordhsip and the billions wasted on track and trace and procurement or the other many and varied examples of tory corruption.

Absolute filth. Honestly, when you look across to the Ukraine and see what you can elect, and we got that tumbledried hamster! Ukraine shows what you can get, if you ban Etonions from being nominated by Etonions for the prime spot.

My own particular dismal byword for corruption, Crispin Blunt, (that has to be a spoonerism) has stated that “everyone” disobeyed lockdown anyway, so it’s no big deal if De Pfeffiel-Johnson did. So thats ok then.

I have NEVER been so utterly dienchanted with both the Govt, of people like the walking oxymoron Cleverly, the bullying Patel, or Kwartang who is proven to be so dim even the James Watt telescope can’t detect him, or the rightious Rees Mogg.

If only we had a press that could be willing to hold them toaccount, rahter than ensuring their financial best interests are served.
I loathe Britain, and what it’s become after 13 dismal years of this bunch of self enriching cowboys.

Father bought a brand new Triumph Dolomite, in oh, about 1980.

Went in for a first service and to investigate a dreadful smell. Lineworkers decomposing sandwiches were found under the rear passenger seats.

The owner’s probably keen to sell up. It’s the issues with the construction, and the lack of insulation thats the major problem. I think condensation leading to internal rusting of structural parts of the bits holding it together are the major issues. Paint isnt a “magic” dampcourse and insulator.

Besides, would you even get a mortgage on one these days?

I’d avoid, simply with an eye for resale. Last one I sold like this (many many years ago) the owner had got a grant to effectively hold up the roof, whilst the walls were replaced one by one with brick. And it looked very odd, the only bright orange semi, in a row of 14 otherwise grey houses.

You have a choice for your vehicle damage claim, against your own insurer, or against the fault parties insurer. Your own insurance MAY cover you for courtesey cars or low cost hire, and perhaps personal effects such as car seats, but in the main thats where it stops.

With uninsured losses (ie everything thats not covered with your insurer, your claim is against the third party only. This will cover generally, hire, loss of earnings, injury, possibly vehicle dimunition (on a 69 plate semi prestige vehicle this may be between 5-10% of vehicle value, roughly, as thats the “value” of the vehicle, next to say one parked on the forecourt next to it. – Insurers don’t like those, you might have to fight on this. –

In England and Wales, claims are made through a specific web portal, (look it up on the Motor Insurance Bureaux website). Not sure about Scotland, that might still be old “Letter of Claim”.

Your motor insurance may have Motor Legal Cover, or if not, your insurer might be able to introduce you to a solicitor. If not, be aware that some solicitors/AMC referral companies might charge a % of your recovered damages as part of their charges, and these are NOT standard, so you might need to negotiate. For for straight forward rear end, likely to be limited to 25%.

It might be worth contacting the TP insurer about hire and repairs, as AMC “Hire cars” on a credit basis can be a nightmare, leading to Court hearings to determine the reasonableness of charges and length of hire. Oh, and many AMC’s are fraudulent scum. Particularly the closer you get to West London or the North West.

£149 isn’t much, if the decks ok.

Have an LP12 with Ittok LVII and an elderly K9, and been thinking of a new paratrace.

There’s an LP12 group on FB and they have in the “files” section, a bit of a duffers guide to new styli on K9/K18 bodies. A lot cheaper than a very indifferent Adikt.

The problem is that the tories confuse “State owned” broadcasting with “Government” broadsacting, and consider them the status quo of British Govenrment, the natural party. They might accept that on occasion, there might be a few years in opposition, but broadly, British Government is “Conservative” Government.

And anyhting that doesnt willingly assist or go hand in hand with that, is to be diminished, dissolved or cowed.

If you listened to Christopher Chope, the man who has blocked many good Private Memebers bills through obtuse process because he doesn’t belive, basically in Private Memebers Bills, he was the member preventing the House from nodding through the Owen Patterson vote, who prevented the Female FGM bill, and the one who prevented making upskirting videos/phones a crime, he is now the sponsor of a bill to kill the BBC licence fee.

Now, I think in todays age, being “State” should mean you can question the “Government”. Indeed, it’s far more important than questioning “The opposition”. I think its essential to have a source of news, information and diaglogue free from commercial taint.

You might not like the BBC or the licence fee, but without it as a bulwark against the Murdoch’s, Barclay Bros, Lord Rothermere’s of the world (the owner of the brexity publication the Daily Heil who chooses to live in France because he can, and now, we can’t!), all we would have is fully commercial broadcasting entities.

Imagine todays position with the press, where 90% is rabidly right wing, and still influential, but transferred to the far more important medium of television.

The BBC is not perfect, but it’s good (and was better) and is all we have at scale to combat the influence of billionaires.

    singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/been-accused-of-a-car-crash-in-feb-this-year/page/2/#post-12162343

    He doesn’t need to.

If his car isn’t damaged, it can’t have happened. You can’t ever repair a car so well that it will stand up to a forensic examination. Paint thicknesses, colours, plastic degredation under uv, part numbers, all manner of give aways. He doesnt need to prove he wasnt in the collisoin, the other side have to prove he did. His vehicle tells the story.

This is a mistaken id, from a lazy and probably dishonest ambulance chaser/solicitor who have had to “scam” some details of a “potential” accident, as they won’t dare go near the claimants actual insurers, who hold the correct details.

The correct insurers would have referred the genuine claimant to a legitimate firm of solicitors if they’d reported injuries at the time. I can actually hazzard a guess which of a dozen firms of legal clowns are bothering the poster.

I wouldn’t get too upset – honestly, it happens all the time.

Well, occasionally. And for every 10 times it happens, less than one out of ten is suspicious suchg as cloned plates – its usually misidentification. –

I did get a rash claims involving cloned plates a couple of years ago, and was lucky that I had 2 claims, one for a collisons on the on a Chichester bypass during lockdown, where the insured lived in Paisley and handn’t left Scotland in several years, and one on the A13, that was captured by Traffic Cameras, the vehicle hitting several others whilst fleeing from Police. Both easily disproven, as the insureds were simply asked by me to go outside whilst on the phone, ask them to take photos of their undamaged vehicles, and send them in by email while I had them on the phone.

Burden of proof is on the claimant, not the defendant. An undamaged vehicle is good proof!

If a third party has a photo of the offending vehicle, you can usually tell a cloned vehicle by details – dealer stickers in windows, alloys fitted, (and omn one I had, the number of doors!- being both otherwise white Renaults) that sort of thing. In my exciting A13 collision, our insureds vehicle was actually in a garage having tyres fitted and couldnt have physically been in the area at the time of the collision, without use of a time machine.

Usually, some idiots just written down the number wrong. – especially if its a year after the accident. I bet the claim against you has come from a solicitor making an injury claim, not from another insurer, who would have been chasing you from the off.

All you need to do is take the other vehicle reg, run it through the MID, find out where it was insured at the time, and ring the third party insurer. Ask them to confirm the details you hold, (they wont give you much info – GDPR rules ect) and you’ll find the discrepancy straight away. They’ll tell you theyve been dealing with Mr X drtiving vehicle y, insured with Insurer X for a year. Then ring the solicitors chasing you, who were instructed a year late, and tell them have got all the details wrong. Make sure you’re rude and belittle them for their lack of intelligence, professionalism, and hint that any genuine solicitor would ahve been mroe timely and accurate.

Given the type of solicitors who typically make a claim a year late, they’ve “bought” the claim, from some Accident Management Company, who have scavenged some “data” from somewhere off the net, from a repairer, recovery company, Police, from a hack/leak or dodgy insurance employee – to learn belatedly of a collision.

The solicitors probably from Bolton, Blackburn or some hole in the ground in Lancashire/Manchester suburbs.

Most of the books in my collection I’d have mentioned have already had a recommendation – but from German POV – Bonfire of Berlin by Helga Schneider was a short but entertaining read of someone under the bombs as they dropped.

One of the reasons the British do go on about the war, is not so much it’s “victory”, but that so much social policy stems from decisions made afterwards, looking back.

Without the war, we probably wouldnt have massive social changes, such as a comprehensive, free at point of service NHS, so much social housing, slum clearances, 60s brutalist architecture, comprehensive education, or long term pension provision.

All striven for to make the world a better place than it was in 1939, and in part to deal with the damaged generation the war left over.

I too after being free of the virus throughout the initial pandemic, and having a double vaccinated status, succumbed on tuesday the 12th October.

Mild irritating cough on tuesday pm, turned into feverish, freezing cold, shivering, and with a continual, persistent cough all night, that meant when I woke on Weds I was absolutely shatterered and unable to even think straight, and this was essentially repeated for about 3 days, before the hot/cold feverish symptoms started to relent – A week spent sitting up in bed, as the only way to even try to get sleep. The weird thing is that you’re not “porductive” theres no snot, no runny nose, no chest congestion, just an iunexplicable cough, without even a sore or tickly throat – but the cough, although better at nearly 2w post covid, and I suspect symptom free, is that bad that a conversation of a few minutes, or a short walk, brings on a hacking fit that almost turns me inside out if I allow it to continue.

Certainly not planning on getting on a bike for some time….. even looking at it makes me feel like coughing.

I feel free of symptoms, but fear that theres actual “damage” on the lungs, thats going to take a while to fix.

Practically everything that has ever been released on vinyl is now available in a digital format, so why would you want to use an inferior audio source? Vinyl offers nowhere near the same dynamic range and ‘fidelity’ of good digital sources, because of the inherent physical limitations of the medium”

But every one is missing the point.

As the Spectator lurches drunkenly to the hard right, and loses much of its hard won prior crediblity as a serious political news magazine in the eyes of those of us who recall it’s rather better informed past, it’s circulation is now roughly double what it was only a few years ago. They’ve literally never sold more.

As it gets more laughable, ill informed and unbalanced and unreadable as a serious magazine, so they flog more copies, thus eenriching themselves and cementing in support for this rather talentless and crooked tory govt. I suspect its this trend that informed investors of the anticipated likely future success of GB News, that there seemed a genuine, paying market for this hard right wing drivel and tosh.

Your difficulty is showing that he was not in view when you started your manoevure, or his excessive speed. If he genuinely was not in view, you pulled out as briskly as you could to minimise the danger, then there is nothing “at fault” about your driving. However, unless he locked up his brakes, and skidded leaving evidence of excess speed, how would you evidence his negligent driving, when the rpesumption is on you to emerge safely?

This is why I counsel people to get dashcams. Only today I have had to tell an insured he was at fault for a third party pulling off from a parked position by the side of the road into his path. The insured would not have been visible to the driver pulling off, and you see the insured turn into the road from a t junction at the same time the driver pulls off, so the insured has effectively turned, accellerated off from virtually stationary and then hit the other driver 40 yards down the road. If it wasnt for their CCTV, I’d have been defending it to the hilt on a “you pulled out”. basis. Its surprising how effective cctv/dashcam footage can be.

How about not treating housing, which is essential, as a “commodity” to be toyed with, and telling them to invest in stocks and shares.

A small private landlord is generally the “worst” in society. I have friends that ended up moving 3 times in five years, simply because every house they rented turned out to be a house the landlord had tried to sell but hadn’t had interest. After 12m, each time, they were given notice so the property could be re marketed.

Unlike stocks and shares, a house is not just an investment, its someones home, with everything that brings. If your sister finds she cant pay the mortgage, due to some “emergency”, that’s someones home that gets repossessed. If the renters cant keep up with rising rents, that’s their “home” they lose. If the central heating busts, has she the wherewithal to fix it, immediately? Its someones home.

Arguably buy to let investors do nothing but push up prices, skewing the housing market. Greed for a “commodity” by those with money, keeping an essential item out of the reach of those who could really use it. i think BTL is one of the hidden social evils of our age.

Nothing much to add, but whatever decision – try not to “blame” anyone.

Your kid might have been annoying the dog. But thats what kids do. Kids are learning boundaries. Its not being “naughty”. Your child is very young, and learning.

Same with the dog, its attacked (not nipped or any other euphemism) your son. He’s only acting as a dog might. And thats not a warning, or a gentle closing of teeth, that’s a proper bite.

Neither are at “fault” really. But if you have lost trust in the animal, regardless of being not the dogs fault, you’ll never fully trust the animal again.

Its very sad, regrettable, but its not “punishing” or finding fault with either party, its just a fact the dog probably needs a different home where it will be happier and less stressed, one without small kids.

If the child loves the dog, and it’s taken away, it might be the lesson the child needs to “listen to Daddy” and “look after things or you lose them” Both may come out of the experience happier, and or better educated for the experience.

But sorry for the position your in.

Rather than put “Here”, could people put STW when listing interesting sites.

I’ve just spent 10 mins on the internet looking for a really useful site called “Here”, possibly news or cycling/maps based and failed entirely. Did find here.com, which was a really dull logistic company website, and I couldn’t understand everybody’s fascination…

Not very helpful, but first, do check the ram is properly seated. I know it sounds silly, but I had this, where I couldnt understand why a new build wouldn’t start up, and one of my two ram sticks wasn’t properly seated.

My next issue was that I’d not put them in the correct motherboard slots.

Suspect you know more than me, but these are simple things to check.

Also, ram could be faulty – does the machine still boot up if you put the old ram back in place? Do check. if it still does, then try one ram stick at a time, and see if it still boots up. Try both as the single primary to see if either of them are faulty.

No central heating, thus generally cold and damp in winter. For winter warmth, generally a requirement to keep a log burner going (and thus not at night or when away from the boat – always coming home to a cold boat in winter) – No proper plumbing, so stuck with Cassette toilets or needing to get them pumped out, inconveniently frequently. Poor security, so you cant really have nice things. (guitars/hi-fi ect) & High maintenance, insurance and berting costs – often poor berth security of tenure. Many rivers have a time limited allowance for mooring – ie must move every 2 weeks – And given most moorings are usually some distance from a road or convenient parking, even going shopping then having to carry goods several hundred yards, or a night out becomes a logistic nightmare. Then consider owning a car and the remote chance of having it parked anywhere near where you’re presently moored, especially with say London parking restrictions and “residence permits” is a disaster waiting to happen. Worse if you have kids and need to get them to a specific school on time.

I looked into it. Very briefly. I continued to rent. Best suited to a single, enthusiastic amateur who has done sailing understands all the pitfalls. Its really really not a clever cheap way into home ownership. Oh, and your asset generally only decreases in value, unlike bricks and mortar.

You can have fun with this.

Just issue County Court Proceedings. Use Moneyclaim on line. Serve them on the company, at some HQ somewhere who wont know what do do, where to pass them, or acknowledge them.

Seek judgement in default after 28 days.

After a little while of no money, seek to enforce the judgement. Cue scenes of unpleasant men turning up and taking their office equipment away whisl’t someone at head office tries to find a corporate credit card to pay not only the refund, the Court Issue fee and the baliffs costs. Be about £4-500 by yhe time you finished. That happening over and over again might make more impact.

Talk of “narks and grasses” is just reinforcing the culture of bullies being able to do what they like with no recriminations.

See, we could all be richer and more successful, if there was no respect for law, and “snitches wear stiches” was the rule of the street. I could break into a bike shop tomorrow and steal 20k of bikes and sell them on this forum, if the likes of “edukator” had their way. I’d be £10k+ up, lots of you would have a lovely mountain bike cheap. As long as no one “tells” on me, then apart from one sad loser, the bike shop owner (who was probably insured) everyone’s doing ok. That’s the society that cheats, bullies and thieves try to reinforce because they thrive under it, at a cost to the rest of us in society.

Society is better if we are free to let an honest, transparent judicial process, agreed by the people through votes/and laws investigate our concerns, than if we all cower in fear of the bullies who rely on our meek compliance to their threats.

If this guy is sick, he may pass it on to several people, who on turn pass on to several more. It only requires one vulnerable person, to have utterly tragic consequences that tear a family apart for ever.

Alternatively, the persons taking the piss, and silent compliance means your wife and her team are doing 10d of his work for nothing, for no reward, no return, and I’m pretty sure he wont be amenable to doing 10d of your wife’s work when she fancies buggering off for 10d with a fraudulent positive text later on. Because bullies requiring a “narks and grasses” culture are rarely fair minded when it comes to other people giving it a go.

Talk of Stazi and Nazi’s is inappropriate. We have a law which even if clear is clearly for a good reason, and its not discriminatory in any way. It has a positive goal in mind.

    Ring your insurers.

They will tell you who the other driver is insured with from a check on the MID database. Alternatively the Police might tell you the insurer, and from there, just call their claims dept and quote the vehicle reg.

If you want to see if it is insured yourself, (if they’re casual about Drink Driving, they might not have it, may not even have a licence) you can use askMID by a search on the registration.

You can then decide to claim directly from them. It may take longer as often drunken drivers not prompt if reporting to their insurers (if they ever do) but eventually they will deal with you as “Road Traffic Act” insurer, if not contractual, as long as you can “identify” the driver, ie you have his name.

Alternatively, you can use your own insurer, and recover excess and other uninsured losses like injury, earnings, car hire at a later date.

I avoid Amazon, I refuse to shop there. They are in a large part why High St’s are dying, leading to run down town centres, local umemployment as well as the problematical position regards tax and unfair competition.

We’re already semi reliant on amazon generally because there are no shops and little investment in retail. Once shops are gone, we’ll be wholly reliant. And do you think they’ll still be cheap then?

Friends recently moved back from there.

Whilst there is the 2 “markets” for property, don’t bank on access to the “local” market. Any job offer may not be permanent – They are quite keen on kicking non Island people out before five years to prevent them becoming “resident”. Most job offers especially state/key workers like the Police, will be that – fixed term contracts. And of course, if you leave any job before obtaining “residency” for a better paid one might kill your chances entirely of getting residency.

Your chances of getting Residency at the moment are generally not that high, my friends went, one as a key worker, the other became one. Even after a couple of years, they could never escape the knowledge that they may not be re-hired, and might not be able to make the island a home.

They came back for a number of reasons, but property was one, they were never going to be able to afford anything to live in, even with two reasonable incomes. It’s basically Posh London prices, unless you’re local market, and even rentals are high. The property market can be slow there, and they found themselves moving from rental to rental, as owners let places, but then decide to sell again. I think they moved 3 times in 4 years and got sick of packing and unpacking.

If you have kids, not sure the Schools are the best. Some prices are a bit cheaper than UK Mainland due to no vat, but not 20% cheaper – Stands to reason, everyhting isimprted, and theres no Sainsburys, no Tescos, Aldi or Lidl. There are 2 Waitrose though!

And with the savings on groceries, you do have to pay to see GP’s so there are hidden costs, as well as the inevitable Aurigny price gouging flights. So if you want to come home, as shortish notice for a funeral, and theres 2 of you, bank on £400 before you even start. Even more infuriating when you’re delayed 2 days due to sea fog.

Its also like a huge village – everyone knows everyone elses business there.

I liked it, but I’d not live there. Its also surprisingly densely populated – Plenty of bungalows and detached houses with big gardens, but you’ll never feel “away from it all” like you might in parts of the UK.

See, I see something different from the comments and the behaviours on display.

From the first post then the update, it may be she’s actually not terribly self confident. And desperate to fit in, to the point of trying too hard.

She doesn’t appear to enjoy cycling. I’d say you can’t enjoy mountain biking without some self confidence. ~The thing about getting off and on to overcome the trail obstacles. She probably hated the cycling part of the holiday, didn’t want to go, but acquiesced to fit in with her partner and his friends wishes.

She also may be trying too hard conversationally in a social setting – hence the things said that annoy you. I’ve seen many a person play “Devil’s Advocate” for a reaction, as part of an effort to converse, clumsily, and overcoming a self reserve or shyness. – You may not see it and you’re not giving any “vibes” to calm it down or offer reassurance. The mixed messages from the dual values of c0onversation not terribly unusual either – Cyclists can be a bit on the nature/hippy side – she might be trying to espouse views to “fit in” but actually holds some contrary views, and it’s hard to keep a narrative over the course of a night/week/however long.

If she didn’t want to be at the pub with you and her partner, she wouldn’t be there. Again, she probably recognises the value of your friendship with her partner, and is trying to “fit in”. – Perhaps he hasn’t made it clear that pub nights are “boys talk” nights. She may not even have wanted to come along, but felt she had to?

You can read these things differently as you can never really know what goes on in another persons head. But try to be a gentler, kinder, more thoughtful, less about you, and see if it changes.

I see someone trying, too hard and just being rejected.

Have you started using a different cleaning product in or around the house recently?

I understand that products that are chlorine heavy, can affect all manner of finishes. For example, people with posh guitars with (particularly older) nitro-cellulose finishes, can find that putting the guitars in or near a chlorine heavy environment find the finishes can go sticky as they react to the chemical. Might be something like that if its all rubber, at the same time, reacting in the same way at the same rate.

I now wait to be slammed by a qualified chemist…
