Halfords are likely to get stock in late next week and also late May/June so will just have to keep checking to see the stock levels. Hopefully will get lucky.

Lots of info to take in, thanks.

The Voodoo looks good but I honestly can’t find anywhere that has it in stock…

Both useful info, thanks. The Bird is a no go, I’ve got a message to say it is no longer for sale.

Got ya. Might hold off and stick to the road for now. Hopefully will be able to get hold of a 15yr old Giant SE to see me through this year. Albeit an unsafe way to see it out. Or maybe new is the way to go, if I can find any in stock.

    Good to know.

Interesting that is worst time to be buying. Why do you think that is?

In regards to good 29ers. Any tip offs on good deals on the market now? Every man and his sprog seems to be buying bikes and anything I add to the shortlist is out of stock.

In terms of new bikes, I saw the following, both are under budget but struggling to see too much of a downside to an entry level bike at this stage. Not sure how much more bang for buck I get by getting something more expensive. Thanks again for your advice.

Can’t get my head around the sizing (is 19″ a L or XL).
    Onza PAYOFF 29″

Or could wait for this to come back in stock in XL
    Vitus Nucleus 29 VRS

Both are under budget but trying to think if I need anything more that an entry level bike at this stage. Not sure how much more bang for buck I get by getting something more expensive closer to £1000 but suggestions are welcome!

    Thanks both for your advice.

I was thinking a similar thing with the wheel size. As a tall lad, a 29er seems more appropriate but I was hoping the XL size of the frame would make the 27.5″ work for all 6ft5 of me.

Combining your advice: Lets say £1700 new. 60% of is around £1000. And three years use makes a fair price around £700-750. I would try it for a ride around the block before buying of course, but it is going to be hard to gauge it without taking out on any trails.

@nixie – you are correct. The bike was bought in 2005, not 5 years old as I suspected, so you were spot on with your estimate. Just thought you should know. It has also made me go for the cheaper option.

I am considering replacing/upgrading the forks but will see what sort of condition they are in when I get hold of the bike. It has not been regularly used but the sheer age will probably cause numerous degrading issues, so unsure if it will be worth spending anything more on it as opposed to buying a new bike all together. I assume posting a new thread for advice about this would be best?

Thanks all for the help, I made an account to post the question and have been blown away by the community support! I’ll be sticking around.

I’m gonna go for the Clarks M2 with the 180 front rotor, 160 rear.

    Cheers. J

Thanks for the help. I’ve got links below to pics, I apologise for the rust….

    Pics of front and rear

From what I can figure out, these are IS mounts with no adaptors present. So I would need a I.S. to PM adaptor for both front and rear. Correct?

what do I need to get my uncle to measure to check the fork mount/disc size?

And how to I decipher these codes? LifeLine Disc Brake Adaptor – IS to Post
