People say this, but it seems to be the case that after I’ve put lots of thought into it I realise that all the things my wife really wants are whimper-inducingly expensive.

I used a Synapse for 6mths and I didn’t get on with it. It just felt dead when putting the power down and I couldn’t get comfy on it, it was too high at the front end so it felt like I was on a shopping bike. I find it’s the same with Treks, Spesh and Schwinn.

I once let my wife go underwear shopping, she spent £2k 😯 I’ve not made that mistake since.

The best present isn’t always the most expensive but the one that has had the most thought gone in to it.

Send her on a pamper day, drop her off (get in a bit of riding) tidy up the house, get dressed up and cook her favourite meal with some nice wine. Do something cheesy, I made some ice cream in heart moulds for mine.

I’m having to rebuild a friends wheel that a bike shop replaced four spokes but just put them in without lacing them up.

Well for a start the Tranny is adjustable. Not really apples with apples.

I just went for a quick google search. Ok bikes I do understand, a Planet X Pro carbon at £1200 for the bike and a BH G4 Ultralight at £12000 (not a typo) They are both carbon racing bikes, I may be being a bit extreme with the selection (as the components will make up some of the costs)

What are the differences between say a Bianchi Carbon HT where the full bike is around £1500 and an Ibis Tranny at £1400 for the frame?

You’re better to claim a mileage allowance, it’s 40p a mile. It’s far less hassle than claimimg petrol.

Becoming a Limited company has benefits, if it goes horribly wrong the client is claiming off the company and not you which could involve you having to sell your property to cover costs. It’s a bit extreme but can happen.

Also when claiming expenses, if you don’t have a reciept don’t claim. Being VAT registered is a benefit (but a PITA) as you can claim VAT back on stuff bought for the company 😉 your computer, desk etc

Register the company and set it up with Companies house, do all your own accounts with a package like M.Y.O.B (but it’s getting dropped in a year or so) Don’t worry about the council, but maximise the ‘Use of Home’ expense. Get the company to pay for telephone and internet. Ideally set it up as a limited company so you can pay yourself a salary and top it up with a dividend. Email me, I run my own companies.

Is chain line really that important on any bike other than a track bike? If it’s out by 2mm what effect is it going to have?

IM it may be over analysing but it seems the easiest way to pass on some knowledge and getting newbies to ‘look where your going and not where you are’ A lot of the time you don’t get the chance to have two or three runs at an obstacle. I’m probably passing on a whole host of bad habits 😳

What BCD are the cranks? You might be able to get a TA or Stonglight chainring to fit.

    Interesting…

I hired a box van 18 months ago and there were no problems. Is there something online that states the official position on this, as I haven’t heard anything to say it’s compulsory now?

Have you seen the amount of debt the UK is in, you have to change your licence every six months.
