Cheers.  Couple of hours to get through that lot.  Most of the time was finding stuff on the internet to copy/adapt.

A keyway broach finally turned up in the post so I could finish the lathe gear. They didn’t have a 3/4″ arbour though so I had to make one.

Turned a random bit of steel from the scrap box on the lathe then cut the guide on the horizontal mill

    PXL_20241016_162209349.MP

    PXL_20241016_162615655.MP

Pressed the broach through the guide and gear on the hydraulic press. It’s not on the piss, I just can’t take a straight photo!

    PXL_20241016_161140080.MP

Finished gear. Now I just have to repeat for about another 9 different tooth counts.

I had the police station and petrol station (both bought second hand for presents one christmas about 40 years ago).  They are still complete and in my parents loft with a load of the road base plates and other cars/vehicles form that era.

Not sure whether this counts as made or repaired.

I’m missing some screw cutting gears for my lathe. They are bloody expensive second hand and not available new so I started making some

This is the 40T blank being turned to size

    PXL_20241004_131616668.MP

    And with the 3/4″ bore

    PXL_20241005_153339048.MP

I had to make an arbour so it could be mounted in my rotary table on the milling machine. This was my first attempt at single point threading.

Cutting the teeth with a DP16, 14.5pa involute cutter

    PXL_20241006_162854358.MP

Finished gear (not quite, I still need to broach the 1/8″ keyway)

Signs that apply human feelings to inanimate objects like the one in Sainsbury’s this morning: “Sorry, I’m feeling poorly so having a rest just now”.  **** off it’s a checkout, it doesn’t feel anything!! Grrrrrrrr

I stopped working through lunchtime and started taking my lunch hour at work.  I use it to go swimming or out for a 3-5km walk 2-3 times a week.

Thanks, was asking gor a mate.  Thought that might be the case but was hoping they might have used a catalogue part like some of the older hubs. I might have a play and see if I can make a new freehub body in steel.

Shearing the bleed nipple is one thing but snapping an easyout in the remaining part is entirely their screw up and on them to remedy.

Edit: no respectable machinist is going to touch that with an easyout snapped in the remaining bit so forget the £20 to drill it out option.

Our have come out with the usual “that lady looks like a man” and some others.

One that sticks in my mind is in CentreParks in Belgium for our eldest’s 3rd birthday she got frustrated at something and shouted “**** it!”. when we asked where she had heard that she tried claiming Maui says it when he meets Moana in the film.  We then watched that bit so she could show us and at that point she admitted “Ok it was Mummy, she uses that word a lot”

This also has to be a classic from the telly

Binners, Jamie – they are both great. Hope they aren’t setting the bar for inktober!

I’ll be in for it again this year but might be a bit sporadic due to work.

so in prep for that, where do I get a replacement from

Buy decent quality parts and they will come with a new screw. Only the cheapest of cheap don’t.

    jonm81

You don’t need the little torx screw. It just helps hold the disc in place while fitting the wheel. The force to mount the disc is provided by the wheel bolts/nuts. A lot of older cars have them snapped anyway. If it does snap it’s not a safety issue.

Edit – If you are anywhere near the Dorset/Hampshire border I be happy to do it for you.

I wasn’t sure that Romsey Rapids was even the best place in Romsey

That just tells you how bad we found the Basingstoke pool.  It had 3 slides of which only 1 was working but that was about all it had

    jonm81

15 minutes extra and go to Splashdown in Poole if the kids like slides.

    https://www.splashdownwaterparks.co.uk/poole/

I’ve taken the kids to the Basingstoke one but it’s a bit crap. If you didn’t want to drive the extra then Romsey Rapids just outside Southampton is better than Basingstoke.

Farmer Palmers is good for kids that age.

    Moors Valley Country Park too.

There are the Ringos at Snowtrax, they have a deal where you get 30min on the Ringos, a meal and access to their excellent park for about £15. You could easily spend most the day there.

Setthorns campsite spans the old railway line (now a bridleway) just outside Brockenhurst. You can easily ride/walk into the town and ride across the forest from there.

Never stayed there as I’m on the edge of the forest but I’ve cycled through it plenty of times and it looks ok.

Edit: just read it’s got no bogs or showers so unless you’ve got a camper van then maybe not a good idea.

Cheers folks. I’ll report it on the link above. We have up to 20 slow worms living in there too so leave that composter well alone apart from dropping in a load of slugs and snails every few weeks.

An early 1960’s Adcock and Shipley 1ESG horizontal milling machine I bought for scrap money.  I did a complete rewire with modern components after someone bodged a 3ph to 1ph conversion at some point in the past.  I still need to fully strip, clean and repaint the machine and also remake the missing the coolant tank and plumbing but the first job is to make a set of gears so I can complete the metric screw cutting gearset for my 1950’s lathe.

Cheers Mick. Brass is really nice to work with. I much prefer it to aluminium.

Slitting and milling will be much easier once I get this machine up and running.

The frame is one I made a few years ago. Columbus Zona tubing with PMW sliding dropouts. Built up with a carbon Lefty and a Rohloff for doing long distance rides.

I wanted to put barends back on my bike but didn’t want to crush the carbon bars.  Rather than buying the £15 Specialized expanding bar plugs I have a lathe and some brass……..

First needed to make an arbour for a slitting saw

Then turned the bar end plugs

I use this one to view multiple GPX files at the same time but it only has OSM and not OS mapping.  Just drag and drop the files in to the Tracks area.

I made my first proper thing on my lathe.

A stud to mount a quick change tool post.  Not the most exciting thing but now I don’t have to mess around with shims to set tool height every time I change tools.

EDIT – FFS how do you post images these days?  The image link thing isn’t there any more, pasting in the direct links doesn’t work and the upload keeps telling me the pictures need to be JPEG and under 10mb which they are.

Had a chance to look at this route in detail as I’d like to do it in a day next summer.

As a heads up the bit in the red circle down towards Winterborne Zelston is virtually impassable. It took me nearly an hour to bash through a mile of head high weeds and nettles last year.  Follow the blue route instead.

I’ve never understood the fascination with Frank’s Tank. It’s just a fairly flat, heavily rutted, track that’s usually overgrown with gorse bushes.

There are far better trails in the Purbecks.

My mum bought a low milage second hand one from the dealers 2 months ago. Looks nice, drives nice but has spent more time at the dealers with various electrical gremlins than with her.

Might just be one of the bad ones as with any make and model though.

From who I’ve spoken to they were free to come and go as they pleased. I think there might be a night time curfew/check in but it must be pretty late as I’ve seen some out after 2200.

If the accomodation is sufficient to meet the basic needs (I haven’t been on board so can’t comment on that) then locating a lot of people in one location while asylum applications are processed seems a reasonable thing to do.

    Did I suggest otherwise?

No. Why be confrontational? It was just a statement that the people I’ve encountered have been genuinely nice people rather than as the local news paper would have you believe.

So why does he need to be on a barge?

Probably because basic accomodation has to be provided and the barge is cheaper than a hotel.

You asked how they access the outside of the port. I told you how. I’m not sure why your reply has an argumentative tone.

    jonm81

how does he get access outside of the port?

He walks out the Port entrance via the main gate. I’ve spoken to quite a few from the Bibby barge whilst cycling around Portland. Almost all have been friendly polite people.

It certainly isn’t like a prison but nor is it Premier Inn quality.

there should be a law, making it mandatory for such contracts to be annulled at their end date, unless explicitly agreed by the consumer.

You have explicitly agreed for it to continue after the free period. It’s not the company’s fault if you didn’t read the terms and conditions.

Edit: People whinging about T&Cs they willingly signed up to but couldn’t be bothered to read properly makes me disproportionately cross
