    some ideas
    – shorter stem
    – wider/higher rise bars
    – bigger volume tyres
    – drop the saddle a bit
    – tweak the forks (compression/rebound/air)

as said above, both you and your wife need a common approach to this and stick to it or it just wont work as your 2 year old is getting a different message from each of you.

try and find a compromise approach that you are both happy with (I know easier said than done!) and then both stick to it.

genuine question; apart from maintenance and simplicity, are there further reasons for running rigid forks when single-speeding?

For RLT does the threshold only apply when the fork is locked out? i.e. the threshold does nothing when riding the forks normally

did you manage to fix it?

when you say it binds solid, you mean you cannot turn the bars at all or it is harder to turn than it should be.

as above try with more shims to prevent the top cap binding on the upper cup.

I do find hope top caps really sensitive, normally try about 1/4 turn at a time.

    What rims do you have?

Neat washing up liquid on the bead?

Tie a band/strap/rope around the circumference of the tyre (to keep the beads in place)?

EDIT: Chilled beat me to it!

We have howdens solid oak, been in for about a year, very pleased with it.

Osmo TopOil is very good, put some on every couple of months, seems to provide quite a tough protective layer.

Cant help on the long pieces – sorry.

as above, try putting a load of soap around the valve area, if it is leaking try tightening up the nut or putting some silicon sealant around the valve.

When you put the stans yellow tape on make sure it is REALLY pulled stretched tight so it sits completely down in the rim well, otherwise it makes it more difficult to get the tyres on (as you are slightly increasing the diameter of the rim).

Also put some neat washing up liquid on the tyre beads to reduce the friction with the rim, I found this helps.

Crank Brothers Speed levers are also useful.

I recently “upgraded” an aluminium frame (px sl team) to a carbon one (pro-lite). The carbon one was marginally stiffer around the bottom bracket and slightly more compliant over rough roads. It depends what aluminium to what carbon frame you are doing.

For me it wasn’t a night and day change just a slight improvement in comfort and power transfer. I wouldn’t rule out going back to a aluminium frame in the future.

Just remember that if you keep your Hope XC hubs you can only ever run the front one as QR i.e. no 15 or 20mm bolt through options.

As above he knows his stuff, I think he worked for Pace for a good number of years. Serviced my RC40’s a few years ago, all good.
