Can anybody report back on long term use on the Praxxis cassette, on MTBR there were a few stories about the 34t alloy wearing quickly.

I guess something like this would be equivalent in 29 flavour for your 1700 budget, probable not going to be as light as your current bike though

You may find 10speed and standard 11-36 sufficient. It’s what I run with a 30T up front and I don’t find it limiting. By the time I’m spinning out it’s generally quicker to freewheel and unless you’re doing SDW etc the 30-36 will get up most things.

The main advantage is an XT 10sp 11-26 is quite a lot lighter than it’s 11speed twin.

That was my thinking a XT 10 with a praxxis 11-40 cassette would have the same range as 11s but it would be lighter (roughly the same weight as 11-36.

Thanks for all the replies, At the moment I am killing myself to get up the hills (as I don’t like walking) so I think I’ll lower the gearing a bit.

not really an issue, just wondering how people select a ratio in general

A single speed specific frame will have some form of horizontal dropouts or a eccentric bb. You can use a normal vertical dropout frame but would need some form of chain tensioner (unless you can get away with a ‘magic ratio’).

You can use a normal cassette rear wheel, just need a single sprocket/cog and some spacers.

    32:18 could be a reasonable starting point for off-road on a 29er

If you had the choice would you ride a 120mm steel hardtail or a 150mm full-suss (both are 26)?

schwalbe one 23mm on alpha rims here, early days but like them so far. Running 85f/100r at 80kg riding weight. May drop them down a bit.

You could try some of the french/german bike shops.

picked up a new sanderson soloist frame a while back, now built up rigid. Its fast becoming my favourite bike, awesome on twisty singletrack

did you get this to work?

I fitted a 23mm One to a Alpha rim last night. Initially couldn’t get it to inflate with a track pump or a ghetto inflator. The air was just leaking all around the valve, i think part of the bead was caught on the rubber part of the valve stem, so i pushed the valve stem through a bit and tried to re-seat the bead so it sat properly on the yellow tape. I then used some easy-fit around the bead and it went straight up with a track pump.

Put 100psi in and it was still up this morning (haven’t added sealant yet).

So you could try checking the bead seating around the valve.

you’ve probably done this already but
    – neat washing-up liquid on the bead
    – valve core out

I think this also depends on the stiffness of the wheel. With lightweight XC wheels its difficult to notice a difference relative to QR, but with Hope/Arch wheels the bike (hardtail) definitely feels more direct when steering through twisty singletrack.

For reference i’ve got reba 120mm 15mm axle forks on my hardtail (upgraded to RCT3 and dual flow rebound).

if you were willing to go to some slightly shorter forks, say 130-140mm a Soul or Prince Albert would be more compliant (due to the thinner wall thickness).

    jonjonjon3

i’m not sure any hardtail that will take 150mm forks is going to be that compliant
