    Fontmoss,

Got the Fawesome for 3 season stuff – brillioant for cooler days / evenings but possibly just a tad too much for warmer summer runs; and an Isterico for colder days – heavier and much warmer – has 3 pockets on the rear & a napoleon front one so works great using base and/or mid layer.

Just recently got some Castelli ones & I think they’re a great fit – I would be a size Small and had Gore ones before but found their small a bit loose whereas the small castelli is spot on – bit more expensive but quality is great so I’d expect them to last

Aha, I know but that would be with Apex whereas this has an SLK light carbon chainset, carbon railed saddle, an Ultegra rear mech and TRP brakes

Shameless hijack I know (hangs head) but he could have this one:-

2011 54cm Cannondale Supersix in Team colours –

    http://s1342.beta.photobucket.com/user/JohnnyBo-/library/

    with this spec:-

Cannondale C2 stems, bars & seatpost

Carbon FSA SLK Light BB30 chainset (52/36)
    Fizik Arione carbon braided saddle
    Mavic Aksium Race wheelset
    Brakes – TRP
    Rear mech – Ultegra SL
    Front mech & shifters – 105

Bought tail end of last year and only used it for racing this year so probably about 750 miles use

    for £ 1350.00

or with a brand new FSA Gossamer BB30 34/50 compact chainset for £1300.00

    Awesome value :)

Yikes – that’s £180 for ‘half’ a shifter unit!! Could be cheaper trying to buy a new set! I put a post up in the wanted section…..just in case someone had their LH shifter ‘kicked’ off at some stage – thanks for the help / info guys.

RH one – so Simon, you saying that I the ‘ brake’ lever AND the ‘down’ shifter are separate fittings ?

For training / spare bike, I use the Michelin Mud 2’s which I think are great or you could try Challenge Limus clincher – I use the tub version and they are fantastic

I use the Swiss yellow stops with TRPs on carbon rims and find they work really well in the dry and well in the wet – I’ve tried Frogleggs, 4ZAs & Tektro cantis on both alu & carbon rims and none of them come close to the performance of the TRPs.

i ordered a light which didn’t arrive (got the email to say that it had been dispatched) – emailed customer services and got a reply from a guy called Lemon – couldn’t have been more helpful and sent out another light which took 2 weeks to arrive – so yeah, pretty pleased with the service

2010 Paris-Roubaix sportive – organised by the Velo Club de Roubaix – fantastic event, run every two years by these guys and by far and away the best thing I’ve ever ridden

agree with Jamie – layers is the way to go – for me at the minute its:-

    merino base
    LS (roadie style) jacket
    gilet or windproof

and when it get really cold, I’ll just add Ground Effects Thermos windproof vest

(I’m using some of those merino bases from OO/PX – alright, they’re not Howies standard quality but they are great value for the money)

Are you going to use it for ‘cross racing?

If so, just be aware that the sloping TT makes it a bit awkward / tight for the portage sections

Apart from that, its not bad value for the money

Other option around that price would be the Ridley Crossbow

    Geoff,
exact same happened to me but it was because I'd over-inflated it -I heard this strange whining noise, then bang – the kitchen looked like an explosion in a sperm bank – took ages to clean it up too

    TLR,
was just thinking about this very thing the other day – fantastic bike – its the Lynskey with strut and running it wi Talas 32s, CK ISO hubs on Olympic rims with Nobby Nic UST, XT gearing / brakes, Hope ceramic BB, CK aheadset, Planet X 100mm stem & carbon bars / seatpost – it's taken me about a year to get the right combination but now its there, I absolutely love it, couldn't be happier

Thanks for that MB – one of the guys last night suggested that it could be some water freezing in it, so sounds like he was right. Will service it and see how it goes after that.

Howies LS here – think it is a class bit of kit, can usually get away with it and Gore N2S windproof jacket – it does tend to hold the moisture but dries quick and I find it keeps the heat in better than any of the alternatives that i have (2XU, Berghaus, Groundeffect)

Also use Lewiskit merino socks – usually get a year out of them before holes start appearing in the toes but they do keep my feet warm, even when wet

and i thought my pads didn't last long – some of the stats above are shocking

Knottie, that must be the guts of 4-500 quid in brake pads there – ouch!

Oldfart – I love the guy from Hope's response – priceless.

& Nonk – if all the posts above are anything to go by, it doesn't just happen sometimes, it happens a hell of a lot

McBoo, did last year – absolutely brilliant (if you like that sort of thing)

Just register yourself through sport communication – the tour packages can work out very expensive

Get a hold of the on-line alpe d'huez tourist information and they can sort you out with accommodation or try King of the Mountains who run a Marmotte special (I stayed there the Fiday – Sunday and would highly recommend them – run by an english couple – Guy & Helyn – food is excellent – they also do airport transfers depending on where you fly to)

BUT would recommend you make your entry as early as possible to get an earlier start number – with 7000 cyclists on the road, the descents can get a bit hairy & the feed stations get very hectic the further back you are.

The atmosphere throughout was great, the views from top of the Galibier were stunning, and the crowds the whole way up the Alpe were brilliant – a very memorable day

Oldfart – you say they didn't fall for it – but thats my point, you obviously paid good money for the pads, they didn't last anywhere near as long as you would expect, therefore I could only conclude that they're not fit for purpose – piss poor value for money.

Had they said to you at point of purchase that "you might only get 2 rides out of these, mate", none of us would be best pleased.

The car and motorbike industry wouldn't get away with it cos they would get their ass sued off, so why should we have to put up with it???!!!
