I spent ages wrestling the canyon/specialized/frame only full suss options. Ended up choosing frame only for 2 reasons
1: it was more fun choosing and sourcing parts within budget
2: I liked the individuality that a self build gives you

I just confused matters but that’s only fair as I was very confused myself .

[otThe red route at QECP frustrated me so much yesterday I gave up and went homee]

stupidly decided to ‘warm up’ by doing 15 miles of the south downs before trying to ride the red route at QECP yesterday. I was sh!te, and I nearly hit a tree.

Nice to see someone not being ripped off. Equally nice to see someone post about not being ripped off.

In my eyes it’s a thing of beauty. Love the fact I probably won’t bump into another very often, and although I still haven’t had a proper ride I know it’s going to be great when I get the suspension just right.

Only had one ride so far but they seem good, haven’t really tested them though. They get good reviews.

It was dirty, it is now clean again. Bloody lovely to ride compared to my rickety old I-Drive, but to be fair any off the shelf new bike would have been. All I am qualified to say is that I love it and it’s nice to have something with a little bit of individuality. Happy days.

Unfortunately Faz although Freedom Bikes built it, it now lives further along the south coast near Portsmouth.

Oi! whats up with my wall? It functions perfectly well 🙂

And how did you get the image directly into the forum pages?

Saddle was a little tarty I have to admit. It was bought purely for its orange and white rather than anything deeper. Bontrager kit was a combination of me wanting the tyres and the LBS being a Trek dealer.

Out of interest why would you shed a few rings? I had a few question marks when choosing so would be good to get some other thoughts.

I can’t get her mucky she looks too good. Did you get chance to see her in the shop at any point as it was being built?

It’s built now and is sitting gleaming in my garage :-). Need to get some let up in the shite weather to ride it now. I managed to stay within my 2.5k budget by taking SLX kit instead of XT. RockShox Revelation for the forks and as you say the float for the rear.

Have you managed to ride yours in anger yet or has the weather scuppered things for you?

Bag of bones skinny is a definite no no for me however I am as likely to look twice at a lovely, curvy size 12 as I am a toned, athletic size 8. My wife is somewhere in between so happy days 🙂

Letus know which you choose and how it went. I am planning to do the south downs this year if I can regain some fitness but I want to do it all in one 🙂

Yes, pre book taxi if you can or better still figure out the public transport beforehand.

Not coastal, well not until the end but you could attempt to ride the whole of the south downs way? You could stop at around 40 miles and have a play on the new red route at QE country park.

If you can afford 100 quid I would hire a guide. I had an afternoon with one and she took me for a 5k run round the imperial palace and then we visited shrines, fashion district, tea room, and had roadside sushi which was amazing.

It’s an amazing city and I wish. Could afford to go on holiday as mine was a work trip. I was advised that Fuji was a bit far to do in the time I had but you should be able to achieve it if you have 8 days.

Make sure you do a shrine and also check out the cosplay peeps that hang out in various places, very very odd.

I m hoping to pick up my small, bright orange Rocket on Sat. keeping the build within budget was a challenge as I wanted certain parts which just cost lots. I don’t think i have made any daft compromises and will let you all know what it’s like to fall off one soon. Thanks to you all for the advice on the parts, ended up with hope hoops and RockShox rev as the parts I wouldn’t compromise on. SLX brakes, mechs etc and XT cassette rather than XT all round to reduce cost.
Have to admit to being a bit anal about the colour scheme and have gone with white seat with orange stitch, white stem, white grips with orange ends, and orangeish seat post. The black bars, wheels, tyres, and crankset will hopefully offset the gaudiness of the white and orange 🙂 can’t wait to see it on Sat.

RockShox RLT purchased from Merlin thanks metal heart good find. Now I have a frame and forks lol. Getting there.

I have £1100 left after the frame has been paid for. Got some Hope hoops for 300 but didn’t find the suss as cheap as above so good call. It’s just amazing how all the small stuff adds up which is why the donor bike seems appealing.

Good call, Pretty close to budget YoKaiser just around 200 too much even if I did sell the frame for your suggested price. My budget has dropped due t some car issues and I now need to cobble together something for around 1100.

Ok so the frame has been purchased. Am now the proud owner of a Cotic Rocket, this I am happy about. The budget has gone down though and this I am not happy about. The latest question from me is this, am I being daft or is it actually cheaper to buy a brand new hardtail and take the parts off as suggested above, rather than sourcing the individual parts? If so, why? Obviously I am gong to have to sell the hardtail shocks and buy 150mm travel forks but that still brings me in about 300 quid cheaper than buying the individual bits. Madness!
