From Littleborough I’m planning on heading over Freeholds Top then Thieveley Pike which look like easier navigating but anyone know what the trails are like?

Haven’t been over there recently but I suspect that given the recent weather/ground conditions it’s going to be more Paaschendael than El Alamein.

The sections over Freeholds and Thievely aren’t all made up tracks and can get VERY vague, especially in the area to the East of Whitworth round Brown Wardle and Hades Hill. There are a lot of old mining/quarry tracks which criss-cross the area and the whole place is generally used as a massive playground by the local motocross/enduro pikeys which confuses things further.

Freeholds itself is extremely boggy – the last time I was up there was about 2 years ago in the middle of June and in places I was up to my thighs in water. I shudder to think what it’s like now.

Theiveley is better – it’s still boggy but drains more quickly.

Bontrager Race Lite RS – this was the pre-Trek suspension corrected frame built by the man himself from True Temper road tubes. Came with a pair of original RockShox with a special set of Bontrager crowns. I used to have one. It got nicked. Rare as hens teeth these days.

    Others I’d lust after –

    Fat Chance Yo Eddy
    Mountain Goat Whiskey Town Racer
    Yeti ARC
    Marin Team Titanium
Klein Attitude (the origianl version with the pink/white/green paint job).
Trimble Inverse 4 (amazingly they’re still in business!!)
Muddy Fox Limited Edition (Suntour Roller-Cam brakes, anyone??)
Overbury’s Pioneer – absolutely classic frame design.
Dave Yates – remember him? He builds some beautiful, classic bike frames.

From the Seathwaite / Honister road junction, it takes around four hours to do the whole loop (depending on stops and fitness).

And if you’re a 40-something knacker reckon on 6 hours at best allowing for a prolonged lunch stop at Wasdale Head and the ensuing beer-fuelled wobble over Sty Head Pass…

Kodak may have the cheapest ink, but they also have a reputation for unreliable print heads.

I’ve always used Canon inkjets, I now have a Pixma iX6550 which uses five individual cartridges for each colour (C/M/Y/K/K – one black for text, the other for photo/graphic use). The printer cost me £149, the cartridges are about £7 each if I hunt around.

Print quality for such a cheap photo printer is outstanding – granted it’s not lab quality but it does for portfolios. Borderless up to A3+.

I won’t use generic/remanufactured cartridges for the simple reason that the ink is very often inferior and can ruin print heads.

They can both open 3d models. Not sure what edit capability they have.

DraftSight cannot open 3D models – it’s Dassault’s 2D drawing editor which replaced Solidworks DWGedit.

I could tell you all about the gash copy of (cough)Solidworks 2012(cough) which somehow fell into my lap a few weeks ago, but weeeelll….

Not sure if this is a good thing…made in Italy too.

If there’s one thing the Italians do do well it’s clothes – I wouldn’t worry about it! Just got one of their Windtex jackets, seems very well made.

And even if it does give up the ghost, it’s like all Italian goods – it isn’t shoddy, or badly put together – it has character…

Also, you expect your LBS to fit parts you have purchased from somewhere else with a smile and not sting you for labour ?

Again, this. If you’d have walked into my shop with a box of bits that you’d bought elsewhere, I wouldn’t even have taken the work off you. You’d have got told where to go in no uncertain terms.

If you are an proper engineer…you would have done it yourself as it would have taken less time and be done correctly.

Agreed. I’m an engineer too – I won’t let ANYBODY near my bikes, especially not some spotty-faced spunk monkey in an LBS. And you’ve worked a 45 hour week and didn’t want to get your hands dirty??? Can’t be a real engineer then…

Also, if you are a proper engineer you will know to – plan properly (which, IIRC, prevents piss poor performance); ALWAYS check someone elses work before thoroughly before accepting it; and always have the right tools for the job.

TO be fair, the LBS shouldn’t have taken the work on, but I still don’t buy your argument that they are solely to blame for this cluster-****. Like they say, it takes two to tango.

Oh, and learn the difference between “of” and “have”. It’s “could have” not “could of”.

I’ve got FOUR OM1s and some Russian film cameras and a Rolleiflex to sell (late father in law) and the real film camera exchange in Manchester offered me a derisory £100 for the lot. Looks like I’ve got to Ebay them all individually then.

What Rolleiflex is it? Pictures? May be interested…

I have an Alpine 160, it’s what has been referred to in the past as a “winch and plummet” bike.

As long as you don’t expect to be able to climb hills like a mountain goat with chilli oil on its bollocks you’ll be fine. It’s just a case of sitting there and grinding the climbs into submission.

Naturally the fun starts once you point the nose downhill…

You can easily find out if the car is currently insured or taxed (and date of expiry) which will give you at least an indication of whether it’s still on the road or been scrapped.

    How?

There’s a lot of 20mph limits in residential areas in Burnley. Again, stats support the claim that they do reduce accidents. But then it’s been done properly with speed bumps every 30 or 40 metres with “bike channels” to the left of them.

Yorkshire Dales? M1 as far as Leeds, A1 as far as Tadcaster, hang a left over Blubberhouses and head for Skipton/Malham/Settle.

Has the inspiration for the Kona come from this?

Brooklyn Machine Works Killer B Race Link, in case you were wondering. Fantastic piece of machinery.

Forks aren’t Shivers, they were USD. Think the ones on the BMW are possibly White Bros.

Dales area should be OK, it drains fairly well being mainly limestone. Thought I might have a sniff round Settle/Malham on Saturday.

Shouldn’t be glow plugs at 60k. Try chucking a tub of injector cleaner through it, change the fuel filter, and at risk of upsetting certain other forum members (cue full-on STW cock-fight) use forecourt fuel instead of supermarket… :P

Oh and then go and cane the tits off it to clear the DPF out.

    johnellison

perhaps one piston refuses to work on supermarket fuel as its better than that ?

The power of the placebo is strong in this thread

If you want to use forecourt fuel do so but lease dont claim its cheaper to buy more expensive fuel

    What can’t speak can’t lie.

Fill it with supermarket diseasel – it coughs and splutters, won’t pull and returns 45 – 50mpg

Fill it with ordinary Shell diesel – it runs fine and returns up to 60mpg.

10 gallons of supermarket fuel costs £63.64p and gives him 500 miles tops = 12.73p per mile.

10 gallons of Shell costs £64.96p and will give him about 600 miles = 10.83p per mile.

So yes, you’re quite right – it does make more sense for him to buy supermarket fuel and I’m just telling fibs.

Slow cooker with 1/2 bottle of red wine some beef stock and some chopped onions……..delish! Could be done same in a covered pot at 150 deg for about 6 hrs for a similar result.

    Half a bottle? Cheapskate… :D

Sling in some carrots, a clove of garlic, celery and a couple of bayleaves, then use the resulting stock to make gravy. Serve with fava beans and a nice Chianti.

    Locksmith?

If you’re going to use explosives, a shaped cutting charge will work best.

Angle grinder? Nope. It would take for ever and cost you a fortune in cutting discs, diamond tipped stone saw would be better. Still going to be expensive but you’ll have it open in no time.

I’d go for 292 – that way at least if they prove too long you can file a bit off the end. If you have a long spoke you can alway shorten it!!

Either that or it’s have less thread engaged in the nipple with a 290.

There’s absolutely no hard and fast rule with any dog, rescue or otherwise. Some are good, some are bad; some can be trained/retrained, others can’t. You pays your money, you makes your choice.

I have working cocker spaniel, got him at six months old from the local vet because the person who had bought him from the breeder couldn’t cope and wanted him destroying. He’s a lovely dog, full of beans, really clean and fairly obedient, BUT he’s a nightmare on the lead (no amount of training has broken him of the habit of pulling), he’s a nightmare off it (if anything moves he chases it until it’s beyond chasing or he’s caught it) and he’s petrified of humans other than me or my parents, and scared stiff of other dogs with one or two exceptions.

That said, I love him more than anything because he’s such a good mate and an entertainment. Am I glad I got him? No question.

I’d be surprised if there was any performance difference, it all comes from the same refineries, meets the same BS standard and the supermarkets sell so much, that any issues/differences would be well documented by now.

There is, but I can only speak from personal experience. My old Volvo V70 T5 would return about 25mpg if I was careful from Shell’s normal unleaded; if I used supermarket fuel, there was no appreciable drop in performance, but the fuel consumption would sometimes struggle to reach 20mpg. If I then went back to Shell/other forecourt branded fuel, hey presto! consumption figures back to normal. I haven’t tried it with my new D5 but then I don’t intend to.

Similarly, my old man’s Skoda Octavia positively refuses to run on supermarket fuel. It struggles under load and returns typically 20-30% worse fuel economy compared to forecourt fuel.

You can remove the core from a Schraeder valve if you’re careful with a pair of fine radio/needle-nosed pliers. Release the pressure on the forks first though!!

In a word – no. They have no allies. Even the Chinese and Russians are getting fed up with them, particularly the Chinese.

As for their nuclear test – the yield was estimated to be 6-7 kilotons; that’s about 1/3 of either of the Hiroshima/Nagasaki bombs. There are more powerful conventional munitions.

What IS a potential worry is that technology being given to undesirable elements such as al-Qaeda or the Taliban. They simply don’t care who they wipe out or how much damage they cause. For North Korea to use it directly would be pretty much final for them. Their ultimate aim is to use it as leverage, by making threats that they will never carry out.

Used to have it, consistently plagued with cold calling (4 or more a day) despite registering with the TPS and subscribing to TalkTalks own filtering package.

Went back to BT and the cold calling stopped. Broadband performance was unreliable to say the least. Plus their customer service is completely lousy.

Soak it in diesel overnight. Degrease, rinse, soak again. Degrease, dry off, soak in (clean) engine oil. Throw away, replace.

Used to be a bit of a Pug nut myself, had a 205GTi 1,9 and a 309 GTi with an Mi16 conversion. Both cracking cars, but the 309 handled better.

I’d love a Delta Integrale (genuine LH drive, natch) but at that price… 8O
