It’s perfectly natural to have a dominant foot, just as we have a dominant hand, ear, eye etc. the human body, including the brain, is asymmetrical. Otherwise we would all be completely ambidextrous.

At the same time though it is possible to be “cross dominant” – i.e. the margin of domination is so small as to be non-existant. This manifests itself as true ambidexterity.

I used to take part in practical pistol shooting which occasionally calls for you to use your pistol one handed, in your weak hand whilst acquiring a target picture with your non-dominant eye. I used to struggle on these stages badly, but a colleague could swap over without thinking about it and suffer no loss in accuracy or speed.

I don’t bother with filters at all except a cheap-jack circular polariser which I got off FleaBay for £12.

I shoot in RAW, and post-process in Bridge and CS5.

… which is an urban myth, and not true. I’ll read the rest in a minute, but I’d suggest a pinch of salt if that first one is anything to go by.

Utter bollocks. Traditional tanning relies on ureaic acid, the best sources of which are urine and dog faeces.

Ever visited a traditional tannery? Or one in a third world country? Or had a go at tanning yourself? Because it stinks to high heaven of P!$$ and $h!t which is why most of them were outdoors. You’ll find places all over Britain called “Tanpits” (such as Tanpits Lanes in Doncaster, Kirkcudbright and Carnforth) which were outdoor areas, perhaps with an open-sided building over them, where tanning was carried out.

I dont mind sacrificing some economy for reliability, which i feel i would be getting from an older japanese petrol- but would LPG be potentially unreliable!?

If it’s installed professionally by a reliable fitter then it shouldn’t be unreliable.

I would say that the only thing you need to be careful of is LPG drying the engine out – regular oil changes are a good idea (like every 5 – 6000 miles) and run it solely on good quality unleaded every now and again – something like Optimax or V-Power.

Bear in mind that unless you are doing regular long trips you probably won’t see any economic benefits at all – LPG systems start up on petrol and take a couple of miles to switch over fully onto gas once they are warmed up.

I ran a Volvo S70 on a single-point ssytem for about 3 years with no problems. I don’t subscribe to the reduced performance argument, it felt no different in response/torque over running it on neat petrol. I do agree that consumption figures will be down over petrol by about 10 – 15%.

Tank-wise, a donut tank in the spare wheel well will allow you to keep full load space at the expense of being able to carry a spare wheel, so you may need to budget in for run-flat tyres too unless you want to carry a can of tyre-jizz and a compressor, or rely on the breakdown services.

Strictly speaking, you shouldn’t clean stonework. It builds up a patina over time which will protect it better than anything. Unfortunately this often looks unsightly. Just out of curiosity which area of the country?

Surely this is a purely subjective question. Totally depends on how strong and fit you are and how long and steep the climb is.

    ^This.

The only “correct” ratio is the one that you can spin comfortably to get you up there!!

Amiens’ nice too – bit closer to the coast than Reims. There’s some cracking restaurants and cafes on the Quai Belu down by the river and the cathedral is well worth a visit (it’s the largest mediaeval gothic cathedral in the world and a UNESCO world heritage site), especially in summer when they do a son-et-lumiere in the evening on the West front, showing how it would have looked when it was freshly painted.

The Mercure hotel is right on the cathedral square with secure parking, or try the Novotel at Boves, about 3 clicks South-East.

To quote US military doctrine –

“De-escalation, deterence and avoidance should be your top three priorities for survival.”

“Always move away from your enemy wherever possible – distance is your freind.”

In other words, at the first sign of trouble, scarper. It’s served me well. Mind you, I’m a lover, not a fighter…

Personally I’d get some Maxxis Hookworms on it – way fatter at 2.5″ wide. Weigh a tonne though, but they look more like motorbike tyres.

Well you would if they were your kids by your own mother. Which given the fact that they are Mumford & Sons could well be the case.

My dad did this once with his Skoda Octavia (1.9TD, same engine’s as the OP’s (mate’s) van), except he brimmed it with unleaded a day before he was due to tow his caravan back from Penrith area to Burnley.

Not knowing how better to proceed he drove home towing the caravan!! He said that it was all OK at first but was gradually losing power the closer to home he got, but he made it.

My mate picked the car up the following day, took it to his garage, completely drained and flushed the fuel system, filled it with diesel, repressurised it, started it and hey presto! never had a problem since. And that was two years ago.

So I suspect with a 75/25 mix your mate should be OK…

OK, stand corrected, the two OLDER Sigma lenses I have do not work with the body. PITA! Good to know as I like the Sigma, and will see if I can’t get a second hand one. Cheers

When you say it doesn’t work, do you mean that it won’t meter or won’t auto-focus?

If it won’t auto-focus it’s either because a) the body doesn’t have an in-built motor (which body is it, you didn’t say??); or b) you haven’t/can’t lock the aperture at it’s smallest (non-motorised lenses generally have a physical aperture lock whereby you stop it right down and lock it at that setting to enable the metering/focus mechanism to work).

If won’t meter and it has an inbuilt drive motor then Sigma may be able to chip it with the latest firmware for you at vast expense.

Do you think that there won’t be warrAnty issues?

You WILL get stung one way or the other for VAT and import duty, whether it’s directly from HMRC or through the carrier. Not worth it. End of.

Yes, but it a) might be a bit much for beginners at 20-odd miles, although it does make a fair bit of use of the Monsal Trail, and b) what benman said about bogs and hell-holes.

Definitely think that the grades are the wrong way round – the bottom map is quite a bit easier than the top. The climb up Buckhaw Brow from Settle (on tarmac) is about the worst bit of that loop!

Given the recent wet weather, the bottom loop should have drained better, and it doesn’t go too high.

TBH I’d be tempted not to do either with beginners – have a look at going out of Settle on the bridleway that brings you out near Jubilee Cave, then head over the moor to Water Sinks and Street Gate above Malham. Drop down the Eastern side of Malham Cove into the village (cafe and pub), then climb back up the Western side of the cove. Hang a left just after the really steep bit of road and climb over Kirby Moor, then you’ve got an outstanding descent down Stockdale Lane back down to Settle.

If you need a guide I can do most weekends, only about 30 mins drive away.

i have always had cold feet with sealskinz when water gets in, never any of this wetsuit bollocks

    +1 – Sealskinz are rubbish.

    -2

Sealskinz are the dogs danglies. If you’re still getting cold feet when you’re wearing them then your shoes are too tight/tightly fastened.

As for them leaking – ball-cocks. They only get water inside them if you go over the tops. If you get calf-length Mid Lites this rarely happens unless your wading through rivers.

Your local bearing shop. I kid you not. Google bearing suppliers in your area, take the offending items to the trade counter and get them to match a set. And insist on SKFs.
