perhaps a little dull in the drumming dept.

I wouldn't say "dull" rather than "steady"; nothing technically adventurous, but IMO you can keep technically adventurous for pompous new-age jazz, thanks very much.

IMO a good drummer is not always about showy rudiments for the sake of it & stupid fills where they're not needed. For example, Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree) is technically very good but his band leaves me (mostly) cold.

I'd rather see a band working together as a whole even if none of the musicians are virtuosos, than a bunch of virtuosos doing their individual thang…

meanwhile, Dave Grohl is a guitarist who can play drums. Better than me, granted, but music has been his day job for the last 20 years…

N Yorks is the largest county in England; care to narrow it down a little?

no it's not wrong. his music does nowt for me either. I'm sure he's a nice chap, and I hear he's a very talented multi-instrument musician, but I'm not a fan of his music

bigsi, 2014 is in Brazil; England's bid is for 2018.

On the plus side, if it is awarded to England, it's a good job they won't have to worry about qualifying 😉

so how many of these "players" will be in the first qualifying squad for Euro 2012?

Probably all of them, as Capello seems to think that these are the best we've got 🙁

    Pedant alert!

The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight is, and has been for years, a Lancaster, a Hurricane and a Spitfire

strictly speaking it's a Lancaster, a couple of Hurricanes, several Spitfires and, I believe, a C47 Dakota.

Even more strictly speaking, it should be called "The Second World War Memorial Flight" as the Avro Lancaster first flew in 1942, when we all know The Battle Of Britain ended some time in 1940

    Ain't navigators failed pilots

possibly. I went for tests at Biggin Hill aged 15 to see if I was suitable.
I never got the results of my pilot/nav tests as I turned out to be (a) short sighted (b) colourblind and (c) hayfever prone.

I can hear it now from my house as I type ,saves me £185 !! My kids always go though and I did in the early 80s when it was about £15

Bingley Live in September is just over the hill from me; if the wind is in the right direction I can hear it from my house

the line-up hasn't been updated lately but at £30 + booking fee for the whole weekend I'd say it's a bargain. Anyone scheduling a run of The Bingley Bash might get to see it for free, from a distance. cheapskates 😉

BTW 97, 01 and 04 were bad holidays for different reasons

97 – didn't take enough money and in a village where there was no access to any more money. Oh, and the plumbing…

01 – I was on a beach in Roses on 11th September. Great up until that point but afterwards was a bit tense. Not least Barcelona airport on the way home about 3 days later

04 – 2 weeks is about 6 days too long for Menorca. About as Spanish as, erm, Spanish City at Whitley Bay

fairy snuff. I don't have much experience of them – or holidays in general TBH.

In 20 years going out with/married to Mrs_Drummer, we've had maybe 8 foreign holidays, 3 of them package, 2 of them flights only where the accommodation was already booked by her sister, so don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking the package deal.

    95 – Dordogne – gite + self-drive + Le Shuttle
    97 – Crete – package (First Choice)
99 – honeymoon – Algarve, package (First Choice)
    01 – Catalunya – Independant Travellers
    04? – Menorca – package (Direct Holidays)
    06 – Cote d'Azur – flight only – Jet2.com
    07 – Cote d'Azur – flight only + car hire Jet2.com
09 – Canada – flights from Canadian Affair, car hire & hotels from Expedia

yes the package deal is great for ease of booking, transfers etc, but booking flights & car hire is easy enough. Just the accommodation left to sort.
With a bit more forward planning I would have booked last years flights to Calgary & back from Vancouver but hey, you live & learn

    why package? just asking mind

I think I've only ever had 2 package holidays, both with First Choice. Ah no, I tell a lie, I did one with Direct Holidays too.

    1) don't go to Crete in high summer
    2) don't go to Menorca for more than a week
    3) Lagos, Algarve is fab. I'd go back there again

30th Anniversary dates in the autumn – 2 consecutive nights at any given venue, 2 sets per night, no support band. Songs from all 30 years will be played. I sooo want to go but Nottingham's the nearest they're coming to me and frankly that's too far. They really should do 2 nights at Holmfirth.

Or Bradford really, but nobody would go 😉

but want it in lime green!

never been to Glastonbury or Leeds festivals; went to Reading c1986. Waste of a weekend IMO.

My fave band is playing the Avalon stage round about now but as per usual the BBC won't show them. Never mind, I saw them in Holmfirth last night for £17 instead of £150 & I bet we got a longer set too.

    Middlesbrough? Eh? Its tyne-side?

    no it bloody isn't. It's Tees-side. That's about 40+ miles difference & there's mackem land in between

anyway – bandit country: Todmorden? Who wants it? And Barnoldswick (Barlick) – currently in Lancashire but the natives don't seem to want to be…

I have two – one joint, one sole.

Salary goes into Sole account, some gets transferred to joint account to pay mortgage and some bills, some is left to pay other bills, and some is mine to spend on me

I will be £170 a year better off as a result of the £1000 hike in the basic rate threshold. I hear there may be an increase in NI which may make me worse off

I will be worse off as a result of the 2.5% increase in VAT

the cut in benefits & tax credits for those that have offspring will not affect me as I have no offspring.
cuts in any other benefits & tax credits will not affect me as I have not received any benefit or tax credit of any kind since mid 1987

Capital Gains Tax will not affect me

Public Sector pay freezes will not affect me (directly) as I work in industry and have already had a pay freeze or two in the last 5 years; I am expecting a pay increase this year, but am not holding my breath…

so all I can say is: meh

There does seem to be a lot of double-standardism going off. Take the afternoon off if you want to watch the game, or stay and work if you don't.

rugby is a cheat – weren't they playing a game of what the americans call "Soccer" when someone picked up the ball and ran with it?

Red card, deliberate handball denying a goalscoring opportunity. Certainly more nailed on than Harry Kewell
