I used to work in Rossendale, some of their “delicacies” include:

    Hollands Pies*
    Pie* in soup
    Pie* in a barm

seriously, a meat & potato pie made by Hollands* and served in either a bowl of soup – usually tomato – or a barmcake**

** bread roll to everybody else

meanwhile, Mrs_drummer is from Whitley Bay, some of their delicacies include ham stottie with pease pudding (as above) and something called “pan haggelty” (I may be wrong but I think it’s a kind of bubble & squeak with corned beef)

    Damn right, slackers

Let’s say a smoker has 5 cigarettes during their working day, plus another at lunch that I won’t count.
Say an average of 5 minutes per cigarette, that’s 25 minutes a day – over 2 hours per week – for which they’re getting paid for doing nothing

Ok, so maybe the non-smokers take a couple of minutes to make a brew – but so do the smokers, so that evens out.

Alternatively, they should let the non-smokers go home earlier or come in later than the smokers. Or better still, pay them more pro-rata

    Filthy habit

Yours, an ex-smoker for the last 13 years

+1 Migralieve – make sure it’s the pink ones as they contain an anti-nausea element.

Can leave you feeling a bit woosy & constipated; when it all wears off I get an appetite the size of Texas

probably doesn’t tick the “non-pricey” box, but I have a Philips audio CD recorder in my HiFi setup – and a cassette deck to allow me to do the same for my old cassettes (those that are still worth it) as for my vinyl.

    image editing software?

e.g. photoshop. other packages are available; the simplest is Paint, but it really is simple

I was watching it from the comfort of the bike/treadmill/crosstrainer with the sound off. It was indeed awful.

I reckon the defining sound of the 80s in the UK was probably Wham and Stock/Aitken/Waterman, rather than rap.

I have to agree there, but also throw in electronica such as Depeche Mode, Soft Cell, Blancmange, Yazoo, Erasure (Vince Clark responsible for 3 of those!) and so on

on the underground side, post-punk, which eventually became goth, was pretty big for a while, certainly in Leeds & Bradford

Great voice but it really does stop there

true, but the same could be said for many of the others named in this thread 😉

besides, I only judge on voice

Btw my list wasn’t necessarily stuff I like, just stuff I could remember off the top of my head

Countzero’s list – most of those acts I may have heard of even if I can’t say I know.

Meanwhile, I wouldn’t recognise Arctic Monkeys or Pigeon Detectives if they slapped me in the face 😉

How are atomic bombs not nuclear?

Little Boy was a uranium fission bomb
Fat Man was a plutonium fission bomb.

    Both nuclear fission

Unless you’re thinking of thermonuclear, which is of course a nuclear fusion device. Aka “hydrogen bomb”

but kept the old one and rented it out

don’t bother; sell it once you’re in the new place, if you haven’t already.

Owning a rental property is fine if the decor & garden are up to date, but it only takes one bad tenant to be in for a year to trash the place. Then it becomes a very expensive PITA to put right

Like I said, it’s not the garment. Or the wearing of it that I have a problem with per se, it’s the stupid bloody name 😉

I drove down to the Dordogne a few years back. To get past Paris I went calais – boulogne – rouen – dreux – limoges and so on.
No idea about the Millau bridge though

I do hope your going to produce some evidence to support this claim.

we’re all still here, aren’t we? Would we have been if Britain had not had an independent nuclear deterrent? That’s another issue. Part of the “beauty” of the V-bomber force is that simply by being there, there was never any need to use them in anger

The whole theory of Mutually Assured Destruction seems to have worked, so far at least.

    <pedant>

the Spitfire was not a thing born of war, it was born of the threat of impending war. It first flew in 1936, 3 years before Hitler’s troops invaded Poland, 2 years before they “annexed” Austria, Czechoslovakia & the Rhineland.

If it had been born out of the actuality of war, it would have probably been 2 years too late to do any good. The Hurricane on its own, while it accounted for the majority of shot-down German aircraft, might not have been enough to prevent the Luftwaffe gaining the air superiority needed for Operation Sealion to go ahead.

    What is this 'breakfast' thing?

    Go home
    Tea with, er, a brew
    Another brew
    Mebbe a beer

    Ooh, touchy 😉

My drumming career never took off because I chose to concentrate on something that would actually pay the bills – the last band I was in would never have made the big time & I was realistic enough to admit this

20 years on, I'm doing this for fun, so I don't need your pity
