I find if I put off doing something about renewing it gets renewed automatically, often at a higher price.

I make a point of always shopping around for car insurance about a month before renewal is due – which is approx 1 month after my birthday, which is a handy reminder to start shopping.

For example, last year I was with Swinton, the premium was going to go up from £32/month to £42/month – no way was I getting stiffed by a 25% rise, so I shopped around. my premium this year is £28/month

    An 80s themed bar_disco chain

I think I managed to avoid that kind of thing even IN the 80s 😉

The Phono in Leeds was where it was “at” back then, and by virtue of being 10 miles away I managed never to go there…

I do not want to send my kids to a school that teaches them less than the nursery he went to at 3yrs old.

a valid point, but here’s something else to ponder – it’s not just schools that play “catch-up”

I went to a fee paying independant secondary school as a day pupil (there were a handful of boarders there) at age 10 – a year earlier than all my contemporaries; I sort of cruised through earning 10 GCE O levels, all at grade B or C. I then did 4 A levels (OK one of them was General Studies, a non-subject) and just about muddled through.

At 17 I was at University going over the same core Physics & Electronics that I’d already covered in my A-levels, simply because there was no guarantee that everybody on the degree course had taken the same options in their A level physics syllabus.

At the end of year 1 I’d lost interest and scraped through the end of term exams, but it didn’t get any better. I never even started the final year of my degree

or you could fasten some beading to the skirting afterwards. After years of painting they’ll make a lovely mess for the next owner to tidy up when they remove said beading under advice from a different carpet company…

should be ok; laminate is what 10mm thick at most? Carpet + underlay should easily be more than that

true, although wasn’t it the Gerry & The Pacemakers’ version of it that prompted the Liverpool fans to start singing it?

What’s a Celtic song got to do with Liverpool?

    it’s a “show tune” IIRC – Rogers & Hammerstein? 😉

I think it’s more a case of “who’s laughing now?”

There were a helluva lot of people rubbing their hands with glee when Leeds went into administration.

The “football family” wasn’t paying attention then and is probably still not paying attention now – how many clubs have gone into administration since Leeds did? Far too many. Portsmouth were the first top-flight club to fall but I bet they won’t be the last…

I don’t think the question should be has anyone test driven an Alfa but has anyone driven 50k miles in one….

I had a 96P Alfa 146 with a 1.6 boxer engine that I bought with 12k miles on. New clutch at 100k miles and another new clutch at 133k (cheap pattern clutch, what can you expect?). That engine sounded fantastic, and was pretty quick

If the cheap chain fast fit grease monkey had done a proper job putting the gearbox driveshafts back together after he’d fitted the new clutch, it would have lasted a hell of a lot longer. Oh what the hell. They’re in Keighley, opposite B&Q. Don’t let them touch anything other than your tyres, and even those I’d take the wheels off yourself & roll them in

next car was a 156 T-Spark with 4k miles on the clock, which I traded in after (a) cambelt failure and (b) head gasket failure (both fixed under warranty BTW) at 76k miles.

would I have another? If the boot on the 159 SW was big enough, yes I would

there’s a farm on the A660 just out of Otley heading towards Leeds that advertises on the roadside. Not sure how sustainable their supply is though

can’t you just give one month’s notice, in writing if necessary? That way there should be no way they can charge you a cancellation fee – unless it’s in the T&Cs of course, which you agreed to when you signed up

The reception staff have become so rude. then complain to the management. unless they are the management

    there’s a P111OCK somewhere near Shipley

and in Leeds there’s a Merc with what looks like YEE HAA but obviously that’s not a valid combination

I passed my test at 26 at the second attempt; first attempt was when I was 17.

The first car I owned was one of these:

    on a 1982 Y plate.

Cost me just under £500, insurance for the first year in inner city Bradford was £350. This was 1991 by the way.

    Since then I’ve had these:
    – what a lemon
    – ok
    – lovely until the grease monkeys broke it
    – even nicer

and now I have one of these:

42mpg or thereabouts. not great for a diesel I admit, but that’s because my commute takes me through Leeds/Bradford during rush hour. If I lived at, say Wetherby, I could be straight down the motorway & probably get nearer 50mpg

    john_drummer

Good point actually – Saabs are not known for fuel economy. If you have a lot of motorway miles to do then if you don’t get a good economical diesel you may as well take money out of your wallet and throw it out of the window as you drive.

i disagree, the one I’ve got now – 2007 9-3 1.9diesel sportwagon – is marginally better for mpg than the 2004 BMW 320d I had before it, used on the same route to/from work.

And of course, in turn that was lots better than the Alfa 156 t-spark that I had before that, but you’d expect that…

Illingworth is pretty common in West Yorkshire. It’s a village too, so the people that carry the name obviously came from there at some point in the distant past

Edit – just realised I’ve never recorded C5 so might not be able to !!!

not sure if I’ve ever even watched C5 other than maybe a couple of football matches.
The only C5 in this household is the Citroen parked on the drive
