Both the article and the related video have been deleted by the Beeb – guy claiming he turned £50 into $1000000 in a short space of time. Maybe it was bullsh*t / scammy?

Wouldn’t be surprised if he just didn’t turn up? He’s incredibly arrogant, plus would we actually extradite him? Honestly wouldn’t be surprised (if he was found guilty) if he just disappeared from public life and continued living a life of luxury without any punishment as we refuse to hand him over.

Not into watches at all (although I did recently buy a 1982 Casio DW-1000), but genuinely find this thread fascinating.

Serious question (not trying to put a downer on things, just curious): Do any of you worry about having several thousand pounds strapped to your wrist? I don’t think I would be able to relax on a night out, constantly worried someone was going to mug me?

Considered a silent disco? That (and the free bar) was the favourite part for most of our wedding guests. 3 different stations to flick between, plus everyone seems to be more relaxed / less self conscious in their own world with headphones on rather than a band or dj in my experience. Or could be done after the DJ/band when noise is an issue.

Small local nightclub, 2am Saturday. Packed dance floor. After a bad pint, decided to walk via the dance floor on the way back from the toilets. It felt hot on the way out and smelt like a septic tank in summer. Found myself a good vantage point leaning against a nearby pillar and watched the carnage unfold.

A Mexican wave of people suspiciously sniffing the air, followed by looks of utter disgust. Retching, followed by a mass exodus. 200 people down to an empty space in 30 seconds, with just lights dancing on the abandoned floor. Staff rushed to the toilets fearing the worst.

10 minutes later normal service had resumed.

And no-one ever suspected the skinny guy, minding his own business 5 metres away.

Just built a nearly 4m square shed for under £1500, so a motorbike sized one roughly half the size is do-able for £700 I imagine (4×2 frame/floor/roof, corrugated sheets roof/sides, 2nd hand UPVC front door, 18mm plywood floor, all sat on breeze blocks). A lot more solid than the cheap metal ones, not too much more expensive, completely dry as off the floor.

Might have already considered it, but would something like an old school Haro frame be suitable?

    Also charliedontsurf:

    It is just a watch..

I guess my main issue with the piece is that if you received this product to review with that article as the marketing spiel, you’d rip it to shreds (and then review the product fairly). We expect this from the manufacturers, not you. Your magazine/business though, so what do I know.

Either way, hope you reach your target and everyone gets their watch.

I get that you guys need to shift these watches to help raise some cash for STW (hence the multiple deadlines, this is your last chance, I really mean it this time) but maybe just be honest about why you’re doing it, sell some lower priced merch, have a gofundme etc? People would be more inclined to chip in?

This watch article come across as a bit desperate, tasteless and damages your brand IMO.

Epstein, as vile as he was, seemed pretty intelligent and cunning. Andrew is clearly a bumbling idiot (and possibly pretty vile too).
Judging from pieces like this https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/07/hedge-funders-have-some-thoughts-on-what-epstein-was-doing.html it seems likely he was blackmailing a lot of rich and powerful people, and from what we know so far, it seems pretty likely that it would be easy for Epstein to have dirt on Andrew.

Hopefully all of Epstein’s “evidence” will see the light of day, but in reality I imagine a few less powerful individuals will be sacrificed, to detract from the untouchable few.

I’d like to see how Messi would do. But I think he’d really struggle due to the physicality of the game here and not being given too much space like in Spanish football.

Have to say I also disagree with this – his record against English clubs in Europe is superb (26 goals in 34 games against the big 6). If he came to City, and played every game I would be astounded if he wasn’t both top goalscorer and top assists (plus all the other metrics, successful dribbles, goals from free kicks etc). He’s the only player I’ve seen come on as a sub against my team, where I’ve been utterly terrified (in a sporting sense). When he’s half on form, you just can’t stop him.

    joeydeacon

Yep, as others have stated, the general consensus is that he can’t even play for them for free, as La Liga needs wages to revenue to be at 75% max, and they’re currently way above that due to the pandemic (and some appalling financial decisions / transfers).

A lot of foreign clubs are in severe financial trouble (Inter etc) and rumours are that they need to sell most of their players due to their owner’s financial situation.

^ What they’ve said. Pay for software / a service that’s established and reliable. It’ll be ready sooner, well tested, regularly backed up and will work better.

By all means have a small website for the basic landing pages (Homepage, About us, staff login, contact us etc) but use a 3rd party for the complicated stuff.

One thing I should have added (sounds stupid but works) is if you do start writing a list of tomorrow’s jobs, then if you end up fixing / doing something not originally on the list, then write it on and then immediately cross it off. Otherwise you may have a very productive day, but your original list will look untouched and you’ll feel you haven’t achieved much.

Also, work out all the stuff you hate doing (weekly/daily shop, washing up etc) and see if there’s an inexpensive way of cutting that out. i.e. Home delivery – doesn’t cost any extra really, saves time and means less impulse buys. (Second hand if money’s tight?) Dishwasher saves you 20 mins a day. Streamline all the jobs you hate, and it gives you more time to do the stuff you love.

    joeydeacon

A few things that work for me (that may or not work for others), feel free to disregard.

Write a list the night before of tomorrow’s jobs – whether work, house related etc – even if they’re small (cut your hair/shower/send an e-mail). Feels good to cross them off, and will result in less procrastination. Loads of jobs crossed off at the end of the day will make you feel you’ve achieved something.

Exercise if you have the time – walk/run/ride/swim/gym/whatever. It’ll take your mind off things and make you feel great. You won’t ever regret a workout.

Cold showers – end your shower with a minute on cold (then progress to longer). It feels good after a few seconds, and makes you feel amazing afterwards.

Get rid of the junk food in the house, and batch cook – you’ll eat healthier, feel so much better and will have more time to exercise/ride/read/whatever.

Also, social media can obviously bring you down, so try quitting that for a bit. It’s not good for you to constantly see everyone else’s highlights.

Use the price comparison site to find the offer you want. Then copy the URL, which will often look like

    https://www.insurancecompanyXYZ123.com/your/package/details?package=1234abcdef&source=comparethemarketetc

Then remove the parameters from the URL that aren’t needed

    https://www.insurancecompanyXYZ123.com/your/package/details?package=1234abcdef&source=comparethemarketetc

then in a new browser session click via Quidco / Top Cashback to that insurer, and once the click has logged the revisit the amended URL

    https://www.insurancecompanyXYZ123.com/your/package/details?package=1234abcdef

And chances are you’ll get around £50-£100 cashback. Works for most “compare” products – mobile phones, insurance etc. Let them do the hard work, you take the cashback.

Fury on points, fairly wide decision. He’s better in pretty much every department, and consistently raises his game in his hardest tests.

Joshua has questionable stamina in later rounds, has possibly more power but isn’t as good a boxer, and has a weaker defence. If Wilder couldn’t KO Fury with his hardest shot, unlikely AJ can.

I’d probably go with a clipped in style saddle pack with bottle inside (keeps it clean), or if you want the weight lower then a seatpost clamp bottle cage (might have to rig up a mini integral mudguard to protect from back wheel filth).

Or top tube (upward facing) if the constant sight of the bottle doesn’t bother you (easy access though).

A Giant VT2 worth around £1300 on an old Bike Magic competition around 15 years back.

Also 11 pairs of tickets to a festival I used to go to (worth around £2500). They were giving away 100 pairs of tickets to people who supplied their e-mail address. Turns out I had quite a lot of e-mail addresses!

Roma have appointed Mourinho, I struggle to see the logic of anyone employing him as a manager anymore.

Really makes no sense. When he came to Spurs, I was fooled into thinking he may have changed his ways given he had nearly a year out of the game to study where it went wrong, and also hired a new youthful coaching team including Sacramento.

As bad as we were, he still overachieved at Tottenham thanks to Kane & Son’s largely superb finishing, and the relative mediocrity of our rivals. In a normal season we would have performed far worse.

And on the back of that he’s walked into another job after 2 weeks?

I imagine whichever pedal you choose to ride with is probably safer, hence why the rider chose it. Most people have tried both, and settled for the one which suited them best.

Extensive (and exclusive) use of one system will probably make the other more dangerous.

Definitely get one with a fixed wheel. We’ve got an Out n About, my son loves it – however we (by which I mean “I”) didn’t realise that the wheel needed to be locked for running.

Was fine for months, one day on a gentle offroad path I hit a small stone, the front wheel span around, stalling the push chair, and our momentum caused my son to hit his head on the frame of the sun shade / roof bit.

He’s fine now (and was ok about 10 mins after it happened) but he had a lump for weeks, and I felt like the worst dad in the world. Wouldn’t have happened if the wheel was locked (I didn’t realise it would lock, we got the buggy second hand). Still feel so bad now, please don’t make my mistake!

I honestly don’t care, as long as Mourinho’s gone. Despite some exceptionally talented players, we’ve been playing horrible football that clearly wasn’t working, with everyone to blame except Jose. I can tolerate it if we were grinding out results, but we’ve been appalling.

Quite happy with Mason til the end of the season, or even Harry in for 7 or so games. Cup final aside, we’ve got an easy-ish run in, so anyone who can get the players to play close to their abilities will get results.

Edit: Bet Mourinho spins this as his brave protest against the Super League, rather than him being sacked for being outdated, stubborn and not getting results.

    joeydeacon

I agree with ElShalimo – I honestly don’t see this Super League tournament ever happening – it’s all a bluff. This is just the larger clubs in Europe using it as a bargaining chip, threatening to leave competitions unless they get a greater share of the wealth. I’m reckoning 90% of new foreign PL fans support one of these 6 clubs, and the clubs know how much poorer the league would be without them. Same for CL.

Tottenham won’t want to leave the PL, as we know it’ll destroy the fan base. We might consider leaving the CL as it has less history and the format has changed throughout the years.

It’s totally unfair on the smaller clubs, but I can’t see the big six leaving the Premier League – we just want more money.

Without sounding arrogant, Uefa would prefer Spurs/Arsenal etc in the CL rather than a less well known European side (simply as we have a higher profile of club/players, better stadium etc) even if we are less deserving and don’t actually qualify via our league – it’s all about getting the likes of Son (arguably most famous sports person in Asia) & Kane etc on the big stage as they bring in more viewers / cash to the game.

I imagine we’ll all settle for guaranteed inclusion in the CL and a greater share of the income from all competitions.

Again, not fair on the likes of West Ham, Everton, Leicester, Wolves etc and totally pulling up the ladder after we’ve climbed up, to prevent the rest from catching us.

It certainly seemed over the top,

I avoid most conventional news mediums (papers/programs etc), and still found it hard to avoid.

At one point the BBC had 3 or 4 articles in the middle of their Sports section linking to their latest Philip news pieces, none of which had any sports connections whatsoever.

Fair enough, have it in the news section and on the front page, it doesn’t need to be site wide though.

Clearly we’re all wrong and short steep 26” bikes are better and that’s why they’re used for everything from the Tour Divide to WC DH nowadays.

To be fair, Pros will be forced/encouraged to use the latest tech from manufacturers, regardless of whether it’s better.

As someone who prefers older bikes, as with most issues I think this boils down to priorities and rider preference. Newer bikes are more specialist, and work better at their intended purpose, usually at the expense of others. Faster on trails, but more of a pain to pedal to the trails. Better handling downhill, but harder to climb fast on. Perfect gearing for trails, but spinning out on long fireroads. Neater cables, but harder to maintain.

Certain technology like dropper posts may transform your riding, but I’m not personally convinced a £300 12 Speed Cassette offers a 15 x performance increase over a £20 8/9 Speed model – for others money isn’t a factor and it’s worth every penny.

But hey, as long as we’re all happy riding, it really doesn’t matter.

    joeydeacon

I’m not reading further an article that talks about discs being new technology.

Discs are undoubtedly an improvement, I’m just left with the impression that many modern innovations offer marginal improvement, and are really excuses to roll out new standards to keep us buying new bikes and bits. Recognise I’m probably in the minority though.

I’m not sure it was all that easy to get an full XT HT for under a grand though…that sounds like rose tinted specs to me!

No doubt someone will be along to correct me, but I’m sure Merlin, Planet X etc used to sell full XT for a grand?!

IMO, part of the popularity of gravel and touring bikes again is down to too much tech and too much focus on super gnarly performance.

This. If old school XC bikes, triple rings, lock out 80-100mm forks were still popular then I don’t think many people would be looking to buy a gravel bike as well.

maybe, but a bit of faff at home (or having your LBS do it) are totally worth it for the almost total lack of punctures I now enjoy

I don’t really ever get any punctures, maybe 1 a year – I run slime tubes which I guess is kinda tubeless with a bit more weight but without the faff

Re: The cost – I honestly don’t think I could enjoy MTBing if Cassettes / Rear Mechs were costing me £100-£200 a time – maybe a sign of me being tight though!

One factor which probably influences my view on more modern bikes is the increase in cost of components over the last few years – you used to be able to easily get a full XT hardtail for under a grand. I’m sure suspension has improved over the years though.

This is why I’m glad change has occurred. All those things you’ve listed, plus dropper posts, are the best things to happen to mountain bikes full stop in my opinion. Although I do think the LLS thing is going too far now.

I guess I like the simplicity and cost of running tubes, 8 speed, external cables, triple rings.. easy and very cheap to maintain. Bought a load of SRAM 8 speed cassettes from Wiggle for £7 each a couple of months back, chains are £7-8, Rear Mechs approximately £20.

I’m intrigued why you think single chainrings are better than double/triples though, same with internal cables? Just a neatness thing?

    joeydeacon
    Free Member

I once read something along the lines of “Your favourite bikes will be the ones you lusted after when you were growing up”.

Personally I think a lot of modern changes weren’t really necessary (at least for the kind of riding I do).

Tubeless tyres seem like a pain to setup, same for internal cables.

11/12/13 Speed cassettes/rear mechs are hugely expensive, and need more precision when setting up.

Single chainrings don’t really add any benefits over a triple setup, meaning you have to ride slowly on the bits inbetween trails.

Slack geometry may make the bike more fun to ride, but again slows the bike down on the non trail stuff.

Essentially if MTBs stayed how they were, gravel bikes wouldn’t exist. Bikes have become more specialist so that you buy two instead of one.
