I’ve managed to get my Hope brakes to sound exactly like an old Police siren!

Have you thought of overshoes? I’ve just bought an Endura MT500 II set for £19 from Evans. Best money I’ve spent on keeping warm and dry. Plenty grip as well for hike-a-biking.

Straight in. On used chains, I’ve given them a good soak in white spirit first.

Cheers. Think I’m going to give this a go when my new bike arrives.

When using the Putoline with a brand new chain do you have to clean off the coating that the chains covered in initially or do you just chuck it in the tin?

I’d highly recommend Muc-Off Wet Lube. I’ve found it to be the least ‘claggy’ of all the ones I’ve tried. I’ve a new bike coming soon so may try the Putoline route tho.

A gentle ride to the Pentlands with my son today. If anybody from Edinburgh hasn’t seen the Colinton Tunnel Mural then you should make a point of going to see it on your next bike ride. It’s a thing of complete beauty.

    What about invisiframe?

I used it on my last frame before I built it up and its fairly easy to do if you’re patient. wouldn’t like to retro fit it on a complete bike tho!

I don’t think you can go too far wrong with nanos in the winter on and off rd.

Nanos are on my current bike and I love them.

my ultimate favourite is the G-One.

These are actually available on the spec list of the bike I’ve ordered. They’re an extra £38 so I’d ruled them out. What makes them your favourite?

looked a bit wet up there today!

I’ll bet it was. Big difference from yesterday. Going back up there tomorrow so might take a canoe!!

Thanks folks. I think I’m going to change to the resolutes going by the general consensus.

I have tried a few gravel tyres over the last 12+ months and found Teravail Rutlands the best.

I really like the look of the Washburn which I’ll maybe try when the new bike arrives (in May!)

A ride through the Pentlands on skinny tyres over snow and ice. Flotterstone through Greens cleugh so not the hardest route but still tricky in those conditions! 15km run today and a trip up the Pentlands with my son planned for tomorrow.

I’ve just bought some after reading this thread. I forgot how good it was!

It’s ace added to a chilli or spag bog.

I’ll have to give that a try. 1 teaspoon in the chilli?

Cheers @whitstone. 3 hour ride today with the whole thing in Z2 give or take. That included ploughing through some fairly deep snow on a gravel bike! I need to try a fat bike!

Hours at Zone 2/3 boundary on your HR monitor will be the best predictor. Forget all those HIIT workouts everyone likes for time-crunched whatever. Sorry there are no shortcuts here (from a 12hr TT specialist).

Does cadence come into it at all or is it purely about staying in the right HR zone regardless of anything else?

Bike demand is _very_ high still.

Yup. I was hovering over buying a Mason Bokeh and in the time I took to think about it the waiting time went up by nearly 3 months! The extended lead time is due to waiting for the Specialized groupset.

Watching Peston on ITV and they’re currently showing a graph of swearing on Mumsnet over the last 12 months. The high points seem to correlate with some of the peaks up there ⬆️

A mixture of running, weights and yoga in the last few days. Need to get back on the bike but I seen to be allergic to the cold at the moment!

Better to stay away from hills during Z2 or tackle them very slowly? I think I’d fall off staying in Z2 up a hill!!

I’ve done a few longer rides in Zone 2 HR but they’re blooming boring! Sitting on the turbo at zone 2 I can fairly zip along but as soon as I’m out on the road I have to go quite slowly! Is this usually the case or am I a lot less fitter than I thought I was?

    jodafett

I’ve built up to 100km so far and felt good but this was all on road so Im going to try some long rides over the hills to see the difference. Wet weather training’s a good shout (unfortunately!), cheers for suggesting it (I think!).

yorkshire beast? if so I have experience

Frontier 300. It’s a C2C across the Scottish border. Before I’d started training for this I think the furthest I’d cycled was probably about 30km 😂😬

Can any point me in the direction of a good training plan for endurance races. I’ve entered a 300km non stop event in June (if it goes ahead!). I’ve never done anything like this before but I’m fairly fit. I just seem to be losing my way a bit structure wise. I have a dumb trainer in the shed (no wifi connection), I use an HR strap but don’t have a power meter or anything like that. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I’m 5’10” and got a 56cm. Fits me fine.
However I’m going to sell the frameset if you’re interested, one year old in grey…

Cheers, do you accept C2W vouchers? 😉

The problem here then is a discrepancy between those who really have to work (key workers) and those who are still working but in non-essential activities.

My employer is forcing me out the door although there is not exactly much work for me to do at the moment!

Joda; I can’t understand that. Are you 100% sure that remained the case? In my authority they softened that approach as so few children attended the hub.

Unfortunately no softening! I know some of the staff that worked in the hub the first time round and it was half empty. They were gobsmacked they refused us. Twice! We’ve reapplied but the rules on the application form remain the same i.e both parents must be key workers!

    jodafett

I can’t work from home and my wife is a nurse but Edinburgh council will only accept kids into the hub if both parents are key workers! Yet Glasgow council only require one parent to be a key worker! This is going to be fun!

Yoga, a two hr walk and an hour on the turbo yesterday. I had planned a big road ride but lots of ice lurking under the fresh snow put me off that idea!

Happy New Year folks and a big thank you for the advice you all gave me earlier in the year. I can now run with no sign of shin splints!! The stretches suggested by @turboferret & @sirromj have done the trick. Without having a target I’ve managed over 500km and recently done my fastest 1/2 marathon in 1:46:55 which I’m well chuffed with. Thanks again and I’ll maybe see some of you at a race one day 😂😉

If anybody needs extra motivation have a look at the 90 Day exercise thread that’s just been started. I did the 100 day to Christmas one and it really helped me get off my butt. You don’t have to go hell for leather but it’s definitely an extra motivator.

No chance. The small brewers have had it tough enough without folk jumping on this bandwagon. Drink in moderation and everyone’s happy 🍺🍺

I’m in. Did the 100 this (last!) year and couldn’t believe the change in my attitude to exercise. A wee tip to anybody doing this for the first time, Yoga gets you by when you can’t be bothered doing anything more strenuous. You can even do it drunk 👍🏼👍🏼
