ohhhhhhh, down-tube shifters

that D-ring on the outside simply tightens up against the lever to provide enough friction against the spring of the derailleur whilst still allowing the lever to move, they were simpler times

what the heck are ‘suicide shifters’?

what hill? :)

well the CruX is designed as a race frame so it’s going to be ‘direct’ but it doesn’t jackhammer you, i’ve been lucky enough to play on a carbon Ibis Hakkalügi and that was soft enough to soak up all the roots and bumps so you could keep pedalling, but you’re paying for that

i’ve done 4+hr rides on the CruX and not been totally beaten up if that’s what you mean

(the baggy stock wheels offering a good inch of suspension might have helped)

i’ll second the CruX if you can get the frame and fork on the cheap, otherwise the Kinesis frames always ride well and are VFM, you’ll always be battling the weight of a steel frame in comparison

I think this one has 160’s at each end

it does, you could easy go down to 140 without losing much power

[edit]
but that’s with hydro discs, you might need more help with cable-discs

Riding a bike in traffic and driving a car in traffic are two very, very different things

you can drive like a c0ck in a car and no-one complains that it’s because you’re listening to music?

passing old kit from your road bike to your ‘cross bike because you “need” new stuff for the former is the traditional way of doing things

i know nothing about saddle design but i know what i find comfortable, no-one can tell you what saddle to buy as one persons comfy perch is another’s instrument of torture

if you can try a Fizik for free give it a go, they’re a popular and well made range of saddles, otherwise it’s a simple case of trial and error

oddly enough the rim widths on the R500 and RS30 are exactly the same, and pretty much the same width as most other road rims that people fit CX tyres too all the time without death

that ‘someone else’ would be Hunt Emerson, UK comic artist royalty, quite an honour for him to draw the strip when i completely f**ked up a deadline, he and the ex MBUK editor Tym Manley worked on Firkin together for aeons

you won’t get decent fish’n’chips on Brighton seafront, just overpriced tourist greasy rubbish, unless you want something a bit different then go to the Fish Smokery under the arches just west of the Palace Pier for crab sarnies and mackerel baps

Bankers on Western Road in Brighton is a block up from the seafront by Norfolk Square (Robin Hood best local pub), and the Chip Basket is further west in Hove, also a block up from the seafront, Bardsley’s of Baker St in Brighton is a good way from the seafront but good fish’n’chips

hmmm, the tsunami was painted muddy, but the colour often goes awry between the original and the page so it cold just look faded, i’ve not got the magazine to see

the words along the top are usually song lyrics, there used to be a competition to guess them, google has kind of put a stop to that

i need to learn to draw better (some would that is ever so), but that’s just a big tsunami wave of mud (with apologies to a famous picture by Hokusai), merely signifying the onset of Winter

6 posts in and no mention of a keyring, you lot are slacking! :-)

they weren’t drawn as maudlin, that’s just your interpretation, is there anything you’d like to talk about?

depends
do you want the same fit on your CX bike as on your road bike?

some prefer a slightly shorter reach for more control off-road, racier types prefer the fit to be about the same

also some people go for a slightly smaller effective frame size for the reasons above

apart from setting it up at the start i’ve never needed to touch a road front mech ever, you’ll be just fine

when did this become the new meaning of this word?

some time in the 1930s or 1950s, depending on who you listen to

piffle, any dual-pivot road brake is more than enough

road brakes aren’t rubbish, start by replacing the pads on your Soras – Aztec, KoolStop, Clarks and SwissStop all make decent replacement pads, then replace the cables if they’re a bit tired

that split should be ok but the crackling of the tyre to the sides suggests they’re past their best

I don’t know any mountain biker that wouldn’t want to carry around a chainsaw, if only camelbak did a bag big enough.
