i wonder if the person that reviewed the bike knows that their hard work has all been for nothing

i went from years and years of racing SS to 1×9 and i’m definitely faster now, all those times you’d be ‘recovering’ and spinning out on a SS you can keep the power down with gears

i have a proper cutting guide because it does the job quickly and easily, and essential for piece of mind when cutting carbon, and it’s paid for itself many times over when lent to friends who want to do a proper job and then return it with a bottle of beer as thanks

if your gear set-up doesn’t have adjusters on the mechs (well, the rear mech really) then they’re handy

so, out of all the people saying just put it in a pocket, how many of you have entered a race?

i say “put it in a pocket” and it’s something i’ve managed to do in every race i’ve ever done

my car requires considerably less maintenance and cleaning after 30 miles than my mountainbike

If its all on soft ground, no rocks

it’s on hard chalk cheerfully scattered with flints, which were once used to make arrowheads and axes out of, so quite gashy

not a huge fan of the Double Taps either, and my shagged old Ultegra still shifts sweeter and quieter than any brand new SRAM

Starship Troopers is about 98% irony.

i saw Starship Troopers in an American cinema, at the end the audience stood up and clapped, it was quite scary, Americans don’t do irony

So I entered a Duathlon as a pair with a mate, that takes place tomorrow. He rang me this morning to say he’d been vomiting all night and couldn’t do it is finally down to race weight and will see me on the start line.

All I’m after is something i can whip on and off any bike for darting around town in the dark. Not planning on doing anything extreme. Although a new rear light may find its way into more regular use.

    Exposure Flash and Flare

i’ve lost count of the times i’ve been out with people who have hipster cysts on their bikes and politely told them how invisible their lights are, achingly cool but invisible

Can anyone recommend me some silicone low-profile “quick-release” lights?

    no

buy a proper light that you can see with and be seen by and doesn’t pack up at the first hint of damp

I reckon that’s because you don’t have to think so hard on a roadie – there’s not quite the same degree of mental commitment required.

i’d say the amount of mental commitment is the same, if not more, it just a different form

you get used to it, the steering just becomes normal and your MTB will be bargelike, and as you get fitter and lose weight the brakes become less awful

they’re merely another option for the future, most everyone i know with a 29er has read the media hype, tried one and then made their own minds up

people do it on anything from 1 to 30 gears, some of the climbs are long, some of them are steep, if you’re fine on that gearing normally you’ll be fine on the HONC

+1 on the Goltec route, the hubs are pretty bombproof and the axle swapping can come in handy

finding a 135mm/700c ready built wheel can be tricky, although a light thin rimmed 29er would do

actually i’ve got a non-disc XTR on Open Pro wheel that’s doing nothing, let me just check the bearings…..

just slip some bib-longs over the top, as you’ve got decent shorts you don’t need the padded versions, and you don’t need to spend huge amounts on them, just the ones that fit you the best

    currently running 36/46 12-26
Nearly the same here 36/46 13-25, it’s classic and it’s right.

since when was running a compact chainset ‘classic’ :-)
classic would be something like 39/48, and right

    36/46 12-27 and 38:18 here
