i’ve done all bar one Mayhems 32-16 or equivalent, makes some of the hills a bit hard, but if you have to walk you’re going about the same speed others are twiddling up

also it’s my SS gear for everywhere, if i need to change gear to suit a different area i take my geared bike

Thanks, but like I said, I fancy moving away from plastic cleats as the cobbles seem to eat them.

steer clear of Speedplays then, as all the mechanics is in the float rather than the pedal they don’t play well with walking over anything, and are especially intolerant of mud and stuff, and are considerably more expensive to replace. you could buy some Cafe Covers, but you could say the same for any cleat

i like time iClics, but the Mk2 version with stainless inserts on the pedals and beefed up cleats, the Mk1 version had fragile cleats and a pedal body that plain old wore away

i’ve had a Zefal HPX frame-fit pump on my bike since forever, it always gets handed to people after they’ve been thwapping away on their asthmatic mini-pumps for a few minutes and i’m getting cold and bored – “Do you want to borrow a proper pump?”

i`ve noticed the straightlining devils have been out this winter making all the trails that bit lamer. shame on you corner cutters. dunno if its just me but it seems worse this year since strava/mega wide bars have become more popular.

i’ve been pondering the same, mostly the wide bars thing though

on the plus side, since Stanmer has become all trail-centrey and people just do laps all the millions of other trails in the area are less used and more narrow twistery fun

My point though is that although the “trails” in Stanmer Park are tolerated, I can’t help thinking they’d be better and more importantly safer for cyclist/dog walkers if some more thought was put into them. They’re still great fun but I’ve had a couple of close calls on blind corners.

let’s think about this for a while shall we, with particular reference to ‘tolerated’ and ‘dog walkers’ and ‘not a trail centre’?

in general I think it could do with having more flow to the trails

that’s always such a poor excuse

but yeah, the BigDog is a great course, constant up-and-down, no rest, lots of singletrack, nice relaxed friendly atmosphere, and beer

32:18 on the SS 29er here, for everything, including the Dyfi Enduro, if you change gear on a SS to suit a different terrain you’ve bought the wrong bike

Hemming is running a dog-walking business with his better half, he still rides his bike a lot though, racin and that

had a few pints with him down the local a month or so ago, he hasn’t changed

    what’s your budget?

there’s a lot of carbon ones around the £100 – 130 mark that are all the same apart from the sticker

if you’re more spendy the Kinesis RC09 CX fork is a corker, no need for the supplied hanger

tell him that £900-1000 won’t get him a ‘stylish racer’ so he might as well get a CX bike :-)

You’ll be able to ride from your doorstep anywhere you live in Brighton, there are cheeky green lanes up to the Downs all over the place, i don’t know anyone that lives in the town who drives the couple of miles up to the Downs

you haven’t mentioned a budget and it depends on what you mean by ‘best’, if you want nightlife and pubs and cafes then the middle of town is obviously ‘best’, although you’ll pay a premium, obviously, but saying that you can get to the centre of town within 20 mins on a bike from the far flung outskirts

if by ‘best’ you mean instant ride access then maybe the suburbs are for you, i can be off-road within three minutes and can do a ride that will rival anywhere in the UK in less time than it takes to drive to Wales

yeah, do you want a CX bike for racing on, for mucking about on the trails on or because you’re too cool for a touring bike?

that wiggle in the bars is simply an ‘ergo’ bend and designed to be a comfy place to put your hands in the drops, although it can be anything but

if it was me i’d rotate the bars so the flat bit of the drops is in the same line as the top-tube and i’d move the brake levers up, but YMMV, you can always experiment by riding around without bar-tape on for a bit just to check everything’s alright for you
