take three pairs of shorts and ride then wash in rotation, Pair 1 will be dry by the time you get round to them again

    Apologies.
Could have sworn the article last year on opinions and influence of friends on kit choice was yours.
The accompanying illustration certainly was, perhaps that’s what got me confused.

the illustrator does not always share the opinion of the article he’s commissioned to illustrate

    Not just Dirt.

    What MTB are the worst.
A couple of unbelievably patronising pro 650B articles by Jo Burt and Matt Letch, people I previously had much respect for, has put me off both the mag and the authors.

i’ve never ridden a 650b bike, i’ve never written anything about 650b bikes, just to clear that up

i assume you mean brake levers that don’t need any geary gubbins inside?

the Cane Creek ones are really nice, comfy broad top to them, and the SRAM S500 if you can find them

Cleland Cycles have a special chain mudguard

    JoB
    Free Member

it doesn’t address the fact that the whole drivetrain rear of whatever bit of plastic you put round the chainrings isn’t protected from the elements, the crap from which will efficiently make its way onto the chainrings every pedal revolution

if no-one’s made something like this there’s usually a reason

    JoB

um, neither of those seem to be doing a good job of keeping the chain-ring area clean, or the rest of the drivetrain getting crap thrown up onto it

    80?!?! blimey

    aroundabout 35 – 50

depends on the terrain you’re riding, whether you ride heavy or light, all sorts of things

experiment, keep lowering the pressure till you get a pinch puncture, then add a bit :-)

if you’re doing ‘proper’ training with a specific regime leading to a definite goal then there are certainly junk miles as they don’t contribute towards your target objective

if you’re getting out just to ride a bike then no

no-one’s arguing the performance benefits, it’s a pragmatic argument as to why people are still using cantilevers, it’s because they’ve been around for 100 years and there’s going to be a few years of change-over before discs become omnipresent

    JoB

I think all of those arguments are outweighed by ‘work in the wet’ and ‘don’t consume your rims at a frightening rate’.

that argument is outweighed by ‘i can’t afford a new dsic-equiped bike and the spare wheels to go with it’ if you’re racing

if i was buying a new CX bike right now id go disc, but i have enough cantilever equipped bikes and matching spares to see me for a while, like many

as you can see he has the choice of disc or cantis, he chose discs for today

i’ve raced SSCX, sometimes it’s a benefit, sometimes it’s a hinderance, sometimes it’s an excuse, sometimes it’s a matter of pride, there’s less to clean
