My bad aracer. I looked,I looked, promise, it’s just the latest threads still seemed to be in ranting mode and my BBC News phone app just popped up with the “News”. It’s good to know that the thought police aren’t immune from being shot down in flames though.

You’ve not done much steel erecting then? The first rule of steel erecting is, get your bolt in first. The pointy end is to align the holes in the steelwork so you can.

News just in; it appears they have realised what a stupid thing they have done and have told parents to ignore the “inaccuracies” in the original letter. It’s on the BBC website, sorry can’t link as I’m incompetent with my mobile.

Sorry asterix, my “Hope this helps” bit was more about why it’s done. I too get annoyed by it despite being a country boy, but cyclists are a long way down the list as to why flailing should be banned. Bridleways don’t have to be suitable for cyclists so we’re flogging a dead horse there. I think farmers can be done for not clearing the road, though I’m not sure if any ever have been.
    Edit, good find ninfan

Laying a hedge or “plashing” is not a yearly maintenance technique and is only done when the hedge is no longer a barrier. Cheaper fencing has made this form of stock containment redundant now though and to be fair it would never have stopped a determined beast.
The other option would be to use a large version of a domestic hedge cutter and clear up the arisings afterwards. It doesn’t take a genius to work out how time consuming and therefore uneconomical this would be. Some modern flails have a blower on the body of the machine to clear roads, but these are less effective on muddy lanes and bridleways. So, the only options are to ride where they use dry stone walls instead or wait for the passage of traffic on the road.
    Hope this helps :-)

Washing machine. Nightmare. Fixed it myself though!

Oooh get you! Mine was the circuit board, so couldn’t be fixed with either hammer or duct tape.

If you’re in Castleton and have done the other routes in the area, it’s quite a nice challenging roadie-rough-stuff type climb. And when you’ve done that, see how many cars you can overtake going down Winnat’s pass, especially the ones that just had to get past you before the cattle grid. The look on their faces is priceless (apparently) 8)

With your ‘shopping skills jamie, I’m sure you could make up a picture with you holding it, you know for old time’s sake.

One reason for ornate OTT design in Victorian public utility structures was the fact that the companies weren’t allowed to turn a profit. So the ‘profits’ were spent on the artwork, and I’m sure there were plenty of dodgy dealings going on.

‘Bike that can be ridden up, along, and down, what like you’ve always done’ is a bit long winded IMO for the marketing department no?

Oh yeah that bar steward. Has a canny knack of liberating your wallet of its contents. Only went in for a nosey, came out a couple of hundred lighter. I might just keep hold of my hard earned next time I visit. Good luck to you in your next venture. I hear the Eskimos might be short of snow.

If I want an unimpeded lap of Pines I’ll start early doors as I know it gets busy after weekend breakfast time. It can get annoying when people don’t check after a section to see if anyone has caught up though.

One measure for working out what is acceptable is to ask what would happen if everyone did the same. School can be a great social leveller, but also shows some people think they are more important than others.

Firstly I’ll admit to a chip on my shoulder about this because it was always the wealthier families who went away in term time, and normally to somewhere fairly exotic. Whereas a lot of the other less well off parents who obeyed the rules couldn’t afford anywhere fancy, so either didn’t go away or settled for a dank caravan on the coast. This was in the 70s and early 80s so it’s not a new phephenomenon. So in my opinion, if you choose to have kids it should be no surprise that holidays are more expensive in the holidays and should be prepared to put up or shut up. It also helps to think in terms of holidays being discounted in term time not hiked up out of.

I infact run an intermediary company to speed along these transactions. My fee is only £200, just send me all your account details and I will do the rest. This is at least 70 percent bona fide.

Turns out I did know  I too saw him in Nottingham. Very good, no guffawing but after a while you realise your jaw aches from laughing inwardly. I’m also glad it was at a theatre rather than the ice stadium, you might as well buy a DVD if you want to watch someone on a screen and at least you wouldn’t have the annoying half second delay from what’s happening on the stage. I’m getting as grumpy as Mr Bailey.

@tang, it wasn’t a topeak alien at Sherwood Pines was it. If so it was mine, luckily I found my wallet that had fallen out as well when I forgot to zip up my backpack pocket. Several people must have passed it, it was about a foot from the centre of the singletrack. Sinking feeling followed by huge relief I tell ye! To be fair I hadn’t realised I’d lost my multitool at the time.

Road cyclists’ speed is often the crux of the problem. Not blaming you here muddy (can I call you muddy? ) and I would have loved to have wintnessed your vitriol. Non and infrequent cyclists don’t expect to need any more than a flick of the wrist to overtake you. I would often prefer drivers to break the speed limit a bit and get the job done with than to leave us both in no man’s land second guessing as to the next move.

I know what you mean about the random rocks, happened upon them the other day. Before then It was one of the few bits of trail that needed a bit of skill. Albeit only a small wheel lift and weight transfer. They’d be better off reinforcing/armouring other bits that succumb to rain and just get wider. This has worked pretty well in other sections.

2.0tdci 57 plate here. Only needed a new high pressure fuel pump c.£900 fitted. Does pull like a train though even with bikes on the roof and full of camping gear it pulls like they’re not there. 45 mpg and no DPF.

If using Chrome it’s easy. Download the gpx and it should appear in a little box at the bottom. Open strava and the import activity tab, then simply drag and drop the download into the box.

None of these rules matter when you have to deal with the type of driver I encounted today. Cycling in the right hand land (which is right turn only) approaching traffic lights in the primary position, lights on red, one car waiting in front of me. Knowing the phasing, I ease up so as not having to unclip, when the driver behind me (think Emma Way) gives me a blast of the horn. When I enquired as to the purpose of this, she asked why was I cycling in the middle of the road. I really don’t know where she expected me to be, presumably between the two lines of traffic on a narrow piece of carriageway where both lanes swing right before separating, so not a very safe place to be. She continued to blast her horn after the lights changed. If anyone can explain why she was upset when I was taking up less space than a car and can accelerate across the short junction just as quick as most calm drivers, then let me know. Apologies for the rambling post.
