The first film I remember giving me a lump in the throat was a couple of scenes in Planes, Trains & Automobiles with Steve Martin & John Candy…

I’m wondering, do more people buy a lottery ticket on a Rollover week, despite winning the jackpot being no more likely? … if so: ?????

*sigh* £107 million and none of us can think beyond looking after #1 & families/friends…

I think they both taste like Germoline

    Root Beer.

Now that really does taste like Germolene.
(Quite liked it though. Shame McD’s stopped selling it…)

Or are the ‘caffeine makes me more alert’ claims all just in the mind… as some studies suggest…

‘Ban’ only applies 10am-5pm during the summer season (whenever that starts)

Hopefully there are no inconsiderate selfish twazzers out there planning to knowingly ignore the ban.

In my opinion, the popularity of Red Bull type energy drinks are a triumph of style over substance, i.e. clever/successful marketing.

One or two cans of Red Bull (or A. N. Other energy drink) is probably no worse for you than if you were to drink other sugary drinks and coffee (I don’t believe the caffeine in a can is much more than a strong coffee).

In moderate consumption the worst thing’s probably that they’re full of sugar, so in that respect will be ‘bad’ for you for the same reasons as Coke, Pepsi, etc.

I know people who drink 2 litres of Coke a day. Which is probably doing them a lot more harm than someone drinking a couple of cans of Red Bull.

    Where is the high street?

High Street is south of Ullswater and runs all the way to Windermere.
    Totally different route to Helvellyn.

When I did Helvellyn on the MTB I started from Glenridding, headed east along the lakeside, turned left up the A5091 to Dockray, left again to High Row, picked up the bridleway at Groovebeck Fold, then over Matterdale Common, the Dodd’s (Great, Watsons’s & Stybarrow), Raise, Whiteside Bank, and onto Helvellyn Summit.

To descend, I backtracked down Whiteseide Bank and took the bridleway down Red Screes/Keppel Cove/Glenridding Common, and back down into the centre of Glenridding.

All in blazing sunshine with stunning views across the Lakes.

I would recomment waiting for good weather if poss.

I find that KMC chains seem to last well

Maybe I’ll try one next time I replace my SRAM, for a comparison.

What chainring are you using on the commute bike? Perhaps go up a couple of teeth so you will move to the mid-range of the cassette.

I have a 48T chainring, coupled with an 11-32 cassette.

I guess I could swap to a 52T or something, but I’m not sure it’d fit without contacting the rear triangle (it’s an MTB frame)

Or I could try and spin higher gears on the climbs. I’m naturally a churner when it comes to pedalling cadence.

do you ride through grinding paste? Or do you have a very strict definition of worn out?

My drivetrain is maintained well & is only exposed to the usual grit/dust & rain from a road commute.

I replace the chain/cassette when the chain starts skipping under load going up some of the steeper hills on my commute. That’s about as technical as I get with measuring the wear.

Depends why you’re thinking about changing the stem, and whether you think the other benefits will outweigh the altered climbing handling.

I’ve recently changed bikes, and gone from a 90mm stem to a 50mm on a frame with a slacker head angle.

I’ve had to adapt my climbing position on steeper hills, and in some instances has made climbing trickier, but it handles a lot better going downhill. For me, it was worth the trade-off.

How exactly is this anything to do with discrimination?

Girls can wear skirts, therefore why can’t boys wear something totally different to a skirt?

Stupid arguement. And stupid parents for encouraging their son to wear a skirt. What kind of parent sends their son to school in a skirt??!?!?!?

Schools have rules and what-not. Get over yourselves and get used to it.

    Over the past 9 months I have spent just over £2400 owning/running a car 😯 That’s almost £8 every single day…

I would love to get rid of it.

    – Local shops & son’s school are all within 1.5 miles.
    – Local bus to Stockport goes right past my front door.
    – Station 1.5 miles away (which the above-mentioned bus goes past) for train services to Manchester.
    – I generally try to cycle the 11.5 miles to work.

The only reasons I’ve not seriously attempted to sell the car are

    – a 80-90 minute commute each way when I can’t cycle to work (compared to 30-40 minutes with the bike or car)
    – an hour or more (rather than 20/25 minutes) to get to my parents (we visit them pretty frequently)

I am toying with the idea of not using the car for a month, see how we get on… although with a baby arriving in a few weeks this probably isn’t the best time…

I’d be more concerned about whether Orange designed that frame for 180mm monster forks?

    They definitely didn’t

RLC’s should have red rebound adjust (R), blue lockout lever (L) & blue compression adjust dial (C) on the top of the right hand leg.

Should also have lockout threshold adjuster on the bottom of the right hand leg.

Sorry to say, but from your description it sounds like you’ve been mis-sold some RL’s…

I spotted this on fleabay the other day too. Couldn’t believe the price. Optimistic to say the least!

If you add up the individual part prices he’s listed it comes to about £3600, and these valuations are also pretty optimistic, so asking for £3k for the lot is way wide of the mark.

The frame is at least 5 years old as it still has the straight top tube. If I recall correctly Orange introduced a kinked tube for the 2007 model (I had one of these that I sold last year for £500).

    Golf?

Golf. Pffft. They can’t even be ar$ed to carry their own stuff. What’s all that about?! Lazy beggars.

I don’t enlist a servant to pedal my bike. I ride it myself.

Plus golfists can take pretty much as many goes as they need to get the ball in.

What are the Olympic Games then?

    Hmmmmm. Ok. Good point Sir.

In that case, I shall be arguing for all the proper sports to be taken out of the Olympics, and replaced with hobbies like pole dancing, horsey riding, ball kicking, falling into a swimming pool, etc

    joao3v16

Could you not say that sports such as football and rugby are judged in quite a large part

Football, rugby and the likes are just games.

    joao3v16

so all big air winter olympic sports (excluding ski jump) are not real sports then?

    In my head, not really.
    But each to their own.

Animals shouldnt be involved in human sports…

Oh, yeh, I forgot about this – using animals negates it being a proper sport too.

I know, I know, my opinions annoy some people.

But this is only an interwebs fori, so ultimately meaningless.

In my irrelevant opinion, any event for which the result is decided by a panel of judges is not a proper sport. Too much room for subjective opinion, interpretation, did they see everything properly, open to bribery, politics etc… I don’t believe anyone can be 100% impartial and objective in these situations.

Whereas stuff like running, throwing, jumping and so on it’s clear who’s the best when you’re measuring against a clock or ruler.

The only variable to deal with is doping.

And while I’m at it, if you’re not physically exerting yourself you’re not doing a proper sport either (shooting, archery, dressage, etc)

I find the BBC news to be utter shite, drivel, non-existent probing of a story … (etc) …

Seems to have deteriorated since the 24-hour news phenomenon took off. Rather than properly reported bulletins throughout the day, they’ve now got to try and fill a whole day, day after day, which means padding out with a load of drivel and repetition.

@shotsaway, I believe what you encountered was what is commonly known as as a “moaning ****t”

All I will say is be careful.

My brother-in-law bought a brand new Nissan Qasqai through an interwebs dealership.

6 months later visited by bailiffs who re-posessed the car – turned out the website was some criminal selling vehicles illegally.

He hadn’t used a credit card, so lost the car & the money.

To remove the spring, you undo the cap on the top of the left hand leg if I remember correctly.

The blue preload adjuster knob should be sitting on a silver hexagonal nut-shaped part that just unscrews from the top of the leg.

There’s probably a small amount of fork oil in the leg for lubrication, so don’t just tip the fork upside down to get the spring out 🙂

The spring should have a colour-coded marking on somewhere (provided it’s not worn off) to indicate its weight. Refer to Fox website for the colour coding chart.

EDIT: just seen previous reply … at least we both agree

Nah, the the UK population don’t know how to do a proper protest.

We’re very good at grunbling about it to our mates at the Pub though.
DO you think the Coalition govt will pay attention to all the pub-based moaning? Thought not.

Yep, the left leg preload adjuster means they’re Vanilla’s.

    On the right leg:

    TOP:
    – red inner dial is rebound (the R)
    – blue lever is lockout (the L).
    – If there’s also a blue dial, that’s the compression adjust (the C).

If there’s not this blue dial, the forks are the RL’s, not RLC’s

    BOTTOM: Lockout threshold adjuster.

Can you actually see where the oil’s leaking from?

I would’ve thought it’s most likely to be the seals, although it could also be leaking around the banjo/hose joint. Can’t think of any other other parts that would deteriorate to cause a leak.

M4 seals are pretty easy to replace.

If you’re unsure the Hope website & tech support guys are very helpful.

or maybe the person killed was … etc etc

Yes, I know. But I can’t be bothered typing considered and well-thought-out discussions on an interwebs forum.

Plus it always strikes me as an odd thing that in situations like this somebody somewhere’s trying to put a cash value on it. Bit like comments regarding the NHS – we’re always quoted the cost of treating this and that, how much ill people cost the country etc etc.

Peoples lives and wellbeing always seem to be reduced to a pie chart by the bean-counters.
