Treat you like a numpty even if you know what you are after

In an attempt to make building/plumbing seem like rocket surgery, when really it’s more like playing with lego

As with any forum, it’s all drivel but a convenient distraction.

Surely it’s the fault of the person who planted the tree?

No! Shoot the maniac who recklessly positioned a bench under a tree in a public place without considering the implications of a global recession and resultant pensions-related public services outcry!

Well, I’ve read and re-read the article, desperately tried understanding the complicated scientific analyis and complex conclusion but to no avail.

So, STW’ers… will eating too much food make me become more biggerer?

Another vote for Marple from me!

Within spitting distance of the Peaks, 30 minutes by train into Manchester, 30 minutes by bus into Stockport, within spitting distance of the Peaks, everything you need shop-wise, and within spitting distance of the Peaks.

Did I mention it’s within spitting distance of the Peaks?

    You had right of way.
She should have given way to oncoming traffic.
    Bicyles are traffic.

    However, she is one of ‘those’ motorists who have a strange atittude to cyclists, hence her ridiculous comment;

but your just a tiny little bicycle and should move over

I went in and asked about a service they said ‘they don’t do disk breaks’

I would imagine they’ve since progressed from this, considering most MTBs now have disc brakes of some sort, especially as the Marple store sells bikes with disc brakes – surely they can service them, otherwise they’re leaving newbies & the incapable/unwilling in the lurch.

can’t find their ruddy phone number right now

    0161 427 8505. Apparently.

Still not been in myself, not even for a browse, despite passing the shop several times a week & only living 1 mile up the road…

    Re. the OP

sent it back under warranty and they said no probs we will fit a new front triangle

then find out the Fu@@ers “re-furbished the old frame”

For me, this is the worst part of it all. Blatant lying & dishonesty toward a customer.

Totally unacceptable & I would be pursuing Orange to supply a new front triangle free of charge, as they said they would in the first place.

Do you have any written correspondance to provide proof of the original agreement?

iPhone wasn’t insured 😳 and I’m not due an upgrade until mid September… certainly can’t afford to buy an off-contract iphone (not even reconditioned)… in the meantime I’ve stuck the SIM card into an old Nokia…

Looking on the bright side, mazuma or some such site will offer me £50-£70 for a broken iPhone, which is better than nothing…

You can buy reducer cups that you can fit to the lower of your head tube, thus allowing you to fit a 1.125″ headset etc.

Then when you upgrade to something with a 1.5″ tapered steerer, remove the reducer cup & fit a specific tapered headset.

    If it’s true …

why do gym’s refrigerate all the sports drinks, instead of providing a tea urn?

why are professional sportists always seen drinking cold/chilled drinks instead of unscrewing the top off a Thermos flask of hot lemon drink?

My local train operator applies a similarly bizarre price plan – return ticket to Manchester is the same price as a single.

So either return travellers are getting a bargain, or one-way journeys are massively overpriced.

most people assume you’ll take a car unless you can’t afford it

That confirms my theory that most people are stupid.

(But yes, if I were to be serious for a brief nano-second, it’s a cultural thing).

I suppose its because they can’t afford to drive

Yes, I spend £3k a year on bike stuff cos I can’t afford to drive.

    🙄

    Wait a moment… with £3k I could buy, tax, insure & run a car for a year!

    D’oh!

ive done that before with ebay. taken new stuff off a bike and used an image off the web cos its better than i could take myself. as long as the item is in immaculate condition i dont see the problem…

I always avoid eBay listings with obvious web images 🙂

Even if a seller claims an item is immaculate, I still want to see that it’s immaculate!

If eBayists don’t post actual pictures of their item I just assume they’re hiding something and move on.

road bike = faster = more fun

And just for the record, the counter opinion: I disagree

A big part of the reason for my commute is ‘fun’
I would have less of this on a road bike than my MTB

    @molgrips

I’d prefer flat bars and a more MTB position if it were busy urban streets mind.

This is another reason I like commuting on my MTB.

Plus, the state of some of the road surfaces around here… I’ve ridden sections of trail-centre that are less pot-holed and rutted 😕

disc brakes are rubbish for commuting, pads pick up too much crud from the road

HOW do they pick up more crap than a V-Brake?

I assumed argyle was referring to the type of crud : i.e. on-road it’s more likely full of oils and other contaminants that can diminish the performance of disc brakes.

Never noticed it as a problem myself though.

The best bike for commuting is whatever you enjoy ridind the most.

I too commute on an mmmBop, in (almost) full off-road spec 🙂 – 14 mile (~20km) mildly hilly route, takes me ~45 minutes.

The only changes I make for commuting are Continental Travel Contact (folding) tyres and a 48T chainring to give me a higher top-end ratio.

Granted, it’s not as fast as a road bike would be (having said that, there are guys on road bikes I pass on my commute 8) ).

I could probably get to work 3 minutes quicker on a more ‘suitable’ bike, but I love riding the mmmBop so I don’t care.

An added bonus is that I can lock my bike in a very secure & covered private bike park whilst at work, so thievery is not a concern.

Everybody is complaining that the system for getting tickets is c**p. Yet no one has come up with a ‘better’ system.

Most of us on here are British, therefore we are highly trained at moaning and criticising.

And being British, it is always someone elses responsibility to do something about it.

    joao3v16

Apparently there have been 22 million applications for 8 million tickets.

It’s not rocket surgery to work out that 22 into 8 doesn’t go.

So why are some people so disgusted / shocked / surprised they’ve not got what they applied for, if any?

    Have I missed something here?

(however, re. the ‘fairness’ thing, I do agree that some people seem to have been given ‘too many’ tickets … perhaps the system should have cross-checked a bit more to broaden the succesful applications)

All I know is, it’s very easy to be morally ‘correct’ / superior about it from the comfort of the interwebs.

I’d like to think that if I found myself on Everest with the chance to help or comfort a dying climber, that we’d do as much as we could.

But if it ever came to the crunch … ?

Ultimately, you could be sacrificing your own life.

One thing I do believe is that in today’s world human life has been severely cheapened in so many ways.

I’ll be interested to see the responses to this.

My 4-and-a-half year old rides in the front on his booster seat thingy, since our newborn arrived and HRH wants to sit in the back with the baby.

I can’t see how it’s any different to him sitting in the back – he’s strapped in using the vehicles 3-point seatbelt & is forward facing therefore not a problem wrt to the airbag.

(of course, I could be mistaken…)

On Friday, just before she goes to collect the tea towels, go into the kitchen and start folding them for her, then just as you’re finishing grab the milk from the fridge & wrap it up in the tea towels with a cheery “oops, almost forgot that!, there you go, have a lovely weekend” …
