Cost of living crisis and Singletrack – An appeal

Using a mobe while driving should be up there with drink driving on the severity list IMO.
The minimum penalty for any motoring offence should be car taken away and crushed to the size of a satsuma, 10-year ban, all legal costs charged to the offender.
Everyone knows the rules so there’s no excuse.
joao3v16Free MemberWhat?
Is it time to act out the ‘to helmet or not to helmet’ fight yet again already?
joao3v16Free MemberI really enjoyed Point Break.
But then I’m not very demanding with my film tastes.Too soon for a remake though. In my opinion.
Who on earth would they cast in place of Keanu & Patrick?
And would Anthony Kiedis reprise his bit-part?joao3v16Free MemberThanks all.
I don’t like things too short/cramped, so it’s sounding like the Medium would be the wrong choice.
joao3v16Free MemberOur son is 5 and has never been a good sleeper. He was awful when he was a baby for the first 3-4 yrs. It gradually got better but it’s still not great. He takes ages to go to sleep and then is usually awake about 5 – 5.30 am. He finds any excuse he can to get up – saying he needs a poo etc. It’s wearing us out! Wife’s expecting no.2 and is tired out anyway so this is isn’t helping. We even saw a specialist who concluded that he’s just one of those kids who doesn’t need much sleep. Anyone got any tips short of chaining him to the bed or moving his bed into the garage…. He doesn’t watch any hyper tv before bed, gets a story etc, has a night light, bottle of water by the bed. He just says sleep is boring!!
My penny’s worth, although I don’t have direct experience of this…
Your son is now 5, so is perfectly old enough to understand that bedtime means bedtime.
I may be wrong, but from your description it sounds like he’s leading you both a merry dance because he knows he’ll get the attention etc.
It may be painful for a while, but I think you need to break the cycle by being firmer with him and make him know that all the messing around at night is not acceptable.
There must be someone on here, or an interwebs site, offering advice on the practicalities.
I know it may not be easy, or work, as friends of ours have had an awful 3 years with their two kids … but it’s maybe worth a try.
joao3v16Free MemberCut the wrist part off a pair of household rubber gloves and use that as a gasket.
Ditto this.
Cheap and effective.

zeitgeistjoao3v16Free MemberIt’s not an IT Upgrade.
All the HBoS accounts have been migrated onto the LTSB systems.
Well, all except some statement data it seems.joao3v16Free Membermost of you seem to believe the distortion that time has had on those memories, rather than accept the truth
No, I know for a fact that I spent very little of my childhood/youth gawping mindlessly at a screen.
Ironically, I now work in IT, so spend my days gawping (mindlessly?) at a screen 😐
joao3v16Free MemberI’ve never been in a car crash. But I still always wear my seatbelt, and buy modern cars with airbags and what-not.
I’ve never crashed or been knocked off my bike. But I still always wear a helmet.
It’s about mitigiating against the worst-case scenario.
A serious head injury sustained whilst cycling may be unlikely, but the consequences are immense.
If something as serious as a head injury may be preventable, then why not take the precaution – if it reduces the likelihood of my young children growing up with a disabled* or deceased Dad then it’s a no-brainer for me.
(*of course, there are numerous other injuries I could sustain that could leave me disabled, but if I worried about every possible eventuality then I’d never get out of bed in the morning)
joao3v16Free MemberIf it had been an attractive young lady stripping to her underwear I doubt the OP would have been a complaining …
joao3v16Free MemberUltimately, I don’t want my kids staring at a tiny computer screen all day and for that reason I’m out!
My sentiments exactly.
I’m from the generation of Lego, Meccano, Airfix, Scalextric, Action Man, playing outside, building go-carts, sand, felt tip pens… generally using your imagination, doing something constructive, learning to think, interacting with other children.
TV, games consoles and other electronic devices generally just spoon-feed, don’t encourage thought or imagination, are very anti-social, and prolonged exposure teaches their brain to become used to the over-stimulation thus reducing attention span such that they can’t concentrate on something for more than a few minutes without announcing they’re bored.
Our 4 y.o is allowed TV and computer games for a limited time (roughly max 2 hours TV a day, maybe an hour of games, and usually one or the other). I have noticed his behaviour change if he’s left too long doing these things.
Whereas he enjoys the TV & computer games, he’s much happier on his bike, drawing, painting, doing a puzzle etc with his friends or parents.
joao3v16Free MemberBut only after God created man first.
There are so many gods to choose from though. Which one are you refering to?
In my comments I refer to the Christian God.
Man has many ‘gods’ (small g), but there is only one true God.Of course, we all have free will whether to believe in Him or not.
joao3v16Free MemberEven if you believe in god, you can’t say god created man, your could maybe say god created the first organisms on earth that evolved in to man..well unless you are one of those creationist weirdos that discounts science in favour of the scriptures..Are you one of them?
Yep.
And I find evolutionists as weird as you find creationists 😀
Science and God are mot mutually exclusive. Science is merely the exploration, discovery and explanation of what God created.
If you truly believe in God (as I do) then that means believing He specifically and deliberately created Man. In His own image too.
joao3v16Free Memberhe thought it was strange when the hotel charged him in pounds sterling not New Zealand dollars
and from this day forth he shall be known as “40-watt” Adendorff
joao3v16Free Member“Atheism is a crutch for those who cannot bear the reality of God”
(Tom Stoppard)
joao3v16Free Memberwhen science doesn’t have the answers humans turn to god
I see it the other way around – science revealing aspects of God’s creation.
Science and God are not mutually exclusive.
joao3v16Free Member“if from there you seek the LORD your God, you will find Him if you seek Him with all your heart and with all your soul”
In other words, if you look hard enough you’ll find what you want to find.
In the context of the Bible the meaning is more along the lines of “if you sincerely search for God, He will make sure He is found”. The key being sincerely.
James Ch 4 v 8 says “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.”
joao3v16Free Membereveryone had a phone at home and did not need to have a mobile
nobody ‘needs’ a mobile
joao3v16Free Memberas for ‘designed’ – why do whales have leg bones?
why do i have an appendix?
etc.
Just because we (with our limited intelligence) don’t understand the design, it doesn’t mean they weren’t deliberately designed that way.
And while we’re at it: Hair. What purpose does that perform, other than for wasting hours and hours washing and styling it.
joao3v16Free MemberBecause yesterday, while walking the dog on nice level ground I went over on my ankle…in front of loads of people. And this morning, it still flippin’ hurts.
A mere few hours later, while making an omelette, I cracked an egg, emptied it into the kitchen compost thingy and put the shell into the mixing bowl.
And every so often (I’m kinda nicking this from a comedian, but I do it), I bite the inside of my cheek.
All these things are ‘User Error’, not a fault with the design.
joao3v16Free MemberTechnically, it’s Man Made Climate Change you’re all talking about …
When the scienceists discovered ‘Global Warming’ was actually a massive lie, they panicked and had to some up with something quick to justify getting continued funding for their research.
joao3v16Free MemberMy screwdriver box
you have a special box set aside only for screwdrivers ?
joao3v16Free MemberYou’ve only got to watch some of them descending on the road to know they can tell what they’re doing! Cancellara notably.
And they don’t wear any protection, unlike the girly mtb’ers … 😈
joao3v16Free Member‘it’s only a small minority of people that poison the perception of British people’
True is this.
Media attention focuses on the negative, creating a false perception of reality. So much for ‘balanced’ reporting.
Nice people doing positive things isn’t newsworthy so we generally never hear about it.
The media has lot to answer for in my opinion. There’s nothing responsible about constantly reporting only the bad news.
joao3v16Free MemberI like the Welsh, they’re great. As are the Scots and the Irish. Although, together, we’re all British
Being lumped together with the English must really pi$$ off the Welsh & Scottish …
joao3v16Free MemberPutting letters after their name is useful for telling the rest of us who the c0cks are
joao3v16Free MemberWouldn’t National Service teach them self respect, discipline, respect for others…etc.?
Yes.
All those good things that their PARENTS are supposed to be teaching them.
Many of the problems with the current genereation are the fault of the previous.
On the other hand, some people are just idiots.
Most of the rioters are too stupid not to pi$$ on their own doorstep.
Morons.
Problem: “Disenfranchised Youth”
Response: Burn stuff & nick things
Result: “Disenfranchised Youth” (still), but now the whole country knows your a d1ck.
Congratulations. Really well done.
joao3v16Free MemberThere are an awful lot of disenfranchised youth out there at the moment
And the best they can come up with to address their situation is burning and smashing stuff up ?
That’ll really help their situation.

joao3v16Free Memberteaching maths Ms Vordeman has better ideas about how to do it apprently.
I’d be inclined t agree with her*. I’m happy to accept someone’s opinion on how to do something if they’re bloody good at it themselves and have years of qualifications & experience.
(*assuming it is actually her opinion and she’s not just regurgitating propaganda for some group or other)
