My birthday is 10th Jan, so I think the #1 for that year was Slade’s “Merry Xmas Everybody”.

Or it might have been New Seekers “You Won’t Find Another Fool Like Me”.

I share my birthday with Brad Roberts off of Crash Test Dummies, and the legend what is Rod Stewart 🙂

I get a weird pleasure reading the comments on Bike Blog articles. The level of arrogance and ignorance within can be quite something.

Although I’m surprised other papers haven’t followed the move made by The Times sooner

You could always have a read of the office practical joke thread??

or the “do tw*ts know they are tw*ts” thread from yesterday

she sounds like one of those people who are so absorbed in themselves that they’re completely obliviuos to the effect their behaviour is having on others, and too arrogant/pig-ignorant to accept anything to the contrary.

Not sure what you do with that kind of person.

As it is, the British are so lazy immigrants have to come over and do all the jobs we’re too snobbish and lazy to do. And then people wonder why there’s a Polish supermarket opens instead of a nice little tea and cake shoppe

There is some truth in this.

In a previous life my wife worked as a cleaner in London. She was there illegally at the time (5 years in total 8) ). She’s still in touch with numerous friends in the same situation (illegal, cleaners).

Although if you’re earning £10+ per hour cash in hand & not paying tax/NI, and going about your business anonymously, then it would be attractive for an illegalist …

If _I_ was god, I would make sure there was plenty of good hard scientific evidence around so that people like TJ would not be in any doubt as to my existence

Perhaps there is evidence, but we’re all so determined that God doesn’t exist that we’re interpreting it all wrong … 🙂

I still don’t get why shops close at 5pm on a weekday

    This.

My wife’s from Brazil. After 2 years in the UK she still can’t understand why the majority of businesses don’t open until 9 & are closed by 5/5:30. She thinks the British are just lazy 🙂 … in Brazil, stuff generally opens 7:7:30 and stays open ’til late evening.

Perhaps UK businesses need to re-think things like opening hours to encourage custome (although they’ll never be as convenient as sitting on your sofa clicking a mouse).

The other thing my wife has noticed is the general level of customer service in the UK – i.e. pretty poor overall.

Businesses here generally seem to want to get away with the bare minimum, almost like we should feel privileged enough just to be consdered a customer.

E.g. the greetings card shop we used a few months back: nobody else in the shop, assistant sat behind the counter doing ab-so-lut-ely nothing, we bought some wrapping paper & my wife asks the ASSistant if she can wrap the present – “sorry we don’t do wrapping” 🙄 .. well, thanks for your help … they closed down shortly after. not at all surprised. blimmin useless.

I’ve been shopping in Brazil where places have re-opened their doors if they spot you arriving after ‘closing time’, and people actually seem to want to help rather than making you feel like you’re inconveniencing them by daring to use their shop …

Is ‘book’ still the correct term to use for these electronic readers?

They’re not books any more, just data files.
    They’re not printed or written.
    There are no actual pages.

    Definition of ‘book’:
A set of written, printed, or blank pages fastened along one side and encased between protective covers.

That sounds eminently sensible. These people don’t feel confident driving in snowy/icey conditions so they are taking a day off. That is a better idea than potentially causes accidents.

But why waste a days holiday entitlement when you could just phone your boss and say “I can’t get to work because my car’s stuck due to snow”?

When we had the bad weather back at the end of 2009 I genuninely couldn’t get my car up the road, therefore – day off 🙂

Ditto this. For the sake of waiting a few days to let your body recover.

Although a gentle half-hour bimble with no real exertion will help, mentally more than physically perhaps, as I imagine you’re slowly going mad being stuck indoors.

Anyway the point I want to make about the Sea Shepherds is that they are not interested in trying to change the Japanese culture by trying to understand it and engage with them. They are angry people who need a cause which is high profile and makes them feel good to fight. If whaling were to end they would have to find something else to be angry about,it is the fight that drives them, to win would be a psychological disaster for them

Interesting. The Sea Shepherds’s don’t really want whaling to end.

That explains why they keep conveniently “losing” 😉 the whaling fleet.

So that just about wraps it up for god, then…

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/7745868/Scientist-Craig-Venter-creates-life-for-first-time-in-laboratory-sparking-debate-about-playing-god.html

Can we get a comment from joao3v16 on this?

It appears they copied existing DNA from Mycoplasma Genitalium, then used a computer to artificially recreate the DNA.

So they didn’t “create” life, they just made their own copy.

They didn’t create their own raw materials first. Plagiarists. 🙂

One day a group of scientists got together and decided that man had come a long way and no longer needed God. So they picked one scientist to go and tell Him that they were done with Him.

The scientist walked up to God and said, “God, we’ve decided that we no longer need you. We’re to the point that we can clone people and do many miraculous things, so why don’t you just go on and get lost.”

God listened very patiently and kindly to the man and after the scientist was done talking, God said, “Very well, how about this, let’s say we have a man making contest.” To which the scientist replied, “OK, great!”

But God added, “Now, we’re going to do this just like I did back in the old days with Adam.”

The scientist said, “Sure, no problem” and bent down and grabbed himself a handful of dirt.

God just looked at him and said, “No, no, no. You go get your own dirt!”

one wonders why you spend so much time trying to convince non believers by reposting stuff from here then

Just posting some stuff that explains what I believe, by way of discussion, which is what interwebs forums are for (?)

You cannot prove a negative which is why you are asked to prove god exists. The burden of proof is on you to support your assertion and you can produce no objective evidence just faith and other stuff

There’s two sides of the arguement, so it’s not just up to ‘my’ side to produce evidence for God’s existence. It’s equally up to the ‘other’ side to provide objective evidence to the contrary.

Either way, it’s a nice discussion but ultimately nobody can be argued into a belief in God.

    origin of the species

Evolution requires non-living matter to turn into a living organism and this has never been observed.

A Biology textbook puts it like this: “As we have seen, the life of every organism comes from its parents or parent. Does life ever spring from nonliving matter? We can find no evidence of this happening. So far as we can tell, life comes only from life. Biologists call this the principal of biogenesis.”

So when it comes to real science (i.e. things we can actually establish by observation and experiment) life always comes from life.

Evolutionists insist life came from nonliving matter but they have no way of proving this.

Newton also said that direction of light propagation doesn’t get changed by a gravitational field – but observation shows it does. Why do you expect me to trust him on God when he got other stuff so wrong?

True, he has since been proved wrong on at least one of his statements, such is the nature of science.

But as nobody’s yet categorically disproved God by observation then the books still open on that one?

Science is a dynamic thing, with theories constantly being proposed, refuted and refined as human understanding grows … the ultimate conclusion might be God … who knows … it wouldn’t be scientific for science to just ignore or reject ‘God’ just because it doesn’t agree with current understanding of stuff … “we don’t like the implications so we’ll assume it doesn’t exist” …

someone might be moved to go off and collect a lot of quotes from atheist scientists to show you, yet again, that none of this is proof or evidence of anything

True. Although I don’t really know what the peer review remark is referring to, having only scanned the last page or two of comments.

Quotes by Christian scientists doesn’t “prove” God.
Neither do quotes from Atheist sicentists “disprove” God.

All it tells us is that some people conclude God exists, some don’t.

And that God and Science aren’t mutually exclusive.

Lets see what some of history’s great scientists have to say:

“Overwhelming strong proofs of intelligent and benevolent design lie around us … the atheistic idea is so non-sensical that I cannot put it into words.” (Lord Kelvin)

“I am a Christian … I believe only and alone … in the service of Jesus Christ … In Him is all refuge, all solace.” (Johannes Kepler)

“The more I study nature, the more I stand amazed at the work of the Creator. Science brings men nearer to God.” (Louis Pasteur). Pasteur strongly opposed Darwin’s theory of evolution because he felt it did not conform to the scientific evidence.

Robert Boyle believed in Jesus Christ’s “Passion, His death, His resurrection and ascension, and all of those wonderful works which He did during His stay upon earth, in order to confirm the belief of His being God as well as man.”

“Order is manifestly maintained in the universe … the whole being governed by the sovereign will of God.” (James Prescott Joule)

“There are those who argue that the universe evolved out a random process, but what random process could produce the brain of man or the system of the human eye?” (Werhner Von Braun)

“Almighty Creator and Preserver of all things, praised be all Thou has created.” (Carl Linnaeus)

“I am a believer in the fundamental doctrines of Christianity.” (Sir Joseph Lister)

“Atheism is so senseless. When I look at the solar system, I see the earth at the right distance from the sun to receive the proper amounts of heat and light. This did not happen by chance.” “The true God is a living, intelligent and powerful being.” (Sir Isaac Newton)

Michael Faraday was careful to “Thank God, first, for all His gifts.”
