From my experience, mention the phrase ‘team building exercise’ and everyone immediately switches off and the overall effect is the opposite of team building.

Best thing you can do is go to a pub/bar for an hour.

Or do something else in a normal social environment, rather than some contrived exercise is a sterile conference room.

(Can you tell I loathe team building exercises?)

Doesn’t unwanted attention of this kind at work count as harassment?

If he doesn’t take the hint and shut up, I’d raise it with your line manager or whatever the process is at your place of work.

This is what would happen if a male made remarks like this to a female in the office (or vice versa), so what’s the difference?

I’d be interested to know how many have breakfast pre commute or on arrival at work? I’m currently wolfing down porridge/muesli or the like plus a banana and coffee before heading out and burping it up constantly during the ride, I wonder if I set off earlier and had a bowl of muesli/protein/banana in work.

Definitely commute then eat, rather than the other way around.

To stave off hunger first thing in the morning have a mug of tea or coffee pre-commute.

For years I breakfasted before my commute, then had another snack on arrival, in the belief that I couldn’t possibly do my commute without some fuel.

Turns out I was wrong (surprise surprise), as my commute is only 11-12 miles.

(Provided I eat a decent meal the night before) all I now have is a mug of strong coffee when I get up, 30 mins later out on the bike for my commute, then breakfast at work.

I’m just as fit/energised, and have lost some weight too. Actualy feel better during the ride, probably as my body’s not trying to digest breakfast at the same time as coping with the exertion.

    Netiquette?

I always thought the main reason for people to use forums was so they could hide behind an internet persona and all normal social etiquette could be ignored, thus allowing them to say stuff they’d never do in real life.

    lighter weight

    How does this matter?

Are you planning on carrying it around the house with you to heat whichever room you’re in at the time?

Most people don’t know or care enough about this issue to even have an opinion (in my opinion).

Probably the most factually accurate post of the whole thread.

Most peoples opinion will be formed along the lines of “we’re not supposed to disagree about anything involving race, sexuality or gender because it’s not politically correct, therefore I agree with anything proposed involving any of these things” …

I tend to think of riding a unicycle as what adults do when they’re too big to be seen on a space hopper or pogo stick … it’s more ‘grown up’ but still has the same childlike/fun element …

My balance on two wheels often leaves a lot to be desired, so I can appreciate the ability of unicyclists, especially off-road and doing tricks

Apparently “Cardio after weight training is more beneficial for increasing muscle size and strength, but cardio before weights can help improve cardiovascular endurance.”

The general concensus from a quick go-ogle of various articles seems inconclusive – some say cardio then weights, others vice versa, spouting different pros/cons in each situation.

To get the best from both, a lot of advice is to do weights and cardio on separate days (or separate sessions on any given day – i.e. cardio in the morning, weights in the evening).

I don’t understand what goes on in some people’s heads

In these situations it’s probably safe to assume ‘very little’

    br has a point

We live in a day and age where nobody wants to be accountable or responsible for anything, if they can help it … everything is always someone elses fault these days …

Although the PPI thing is fair enough – we rely on Banks etc to give us proper advice, not just tell us what they need to in order to hit their monthly target for selling a product.

Its a fallacy to say “after I’ve paid my rent / mortgage I only have ‘x’ left to live on” The decision people make is “I can manage to live on “x” so I’ll spend the remainder on the nicest house I can find”

The latter was probably true until the world all went wrong a few years ago … now, the former is generally a more accurate picture for a lot of people …

How many were in your year?

I think there was about 250 in my High School year intake.

Which means, according to your tutors statistic, 1 in 250 people will be murdered to death.

4 in every 1000 … sounds like quite a high proportion

Do they really want an ‘outspoken’ cyclist?

I mean, Jeremy Clarkson is ‘outspoken’, but hardly the sort of person you’d involve in a proper/serious debate about anything.

I hope they end up with someone sensible, and not just some guy with a head cam and access to YouTube. Although I suppose that’s exactly what they want, to create a ‘lively’ debate.

I’m on an MTB too, which makes it harder work.

Not really. If you’d said it was 10 miles then an MTB would be harder, but for a given time an MTB is no harder than a road bike. Lower gearing, so if anything it’s easier.

It’s 11.5 miles (if I go the shortest route)

I meant ‘harder’ in the sense that riding at the same speed on a roadie-ists bike would require a lot less effort … as proven by the odd roadie who glides effortlessly past me on occasion

It’s probably equally hard, but just for a longer period of time on an MTB as top speed is lower

I don’t just bumble along in a nice easy gear either – my average commute speed is 17/18 mph

    6′ and 85kg, seeing as we’re having a weigh-off

40/45mins riding each way(less on way home) but think because it’s the start of the day I end up feeling pretty drained. Maybe need to eat more porridge before heading out

For what it’s worth, my commute is around 40 minutes at each end of the day, with the majority of the climbs on the way home.

I tend to treat my commute as some kind of personal time trial which makes it quite an intense workout. I’m on an MTB too, which makes it harder work.

In the morning I just have a mug of strong coffee before getting on the bike, and eat a proper breakfast when I get to work (muesli with added kiwi/banana/protein powder & skimmed milk).

I think a lot depends on eating a decent evening meal the day before (I mean nutritious rather than big).

A 40 minute ride shouldn’t need any special food intake provided you eat properly/sensibly throughout the day.

For Goodness Shakes are pretty good if you want something effective and ready-made.

Don’t bother with those tins of ‘Nurishment’ (I think they’re called) that were referred to by danjthomas, they’re terrible.

As for many previous posters, I make my own recovery drink by blending together : 1/2 litre skimmed milk, 1 lge banana, 30g scoop of whey protein powder* & 2 or 3 tsp of cocoa powder

    (protein powder from myprotein.co.uk)

The Marin trial seemed an odd design to me – too much climbing on singletrack and descending on fire road … didn’t think much of it to be honest.

I would recommend the Marin for beginners though, although only if you can’t get to Llandegla.

the T-Rex had the strongest bite of any creature evah to walk the earth.

Seems like the force between two of it’s back teeth was like being sat on by a medium-sized elephant

The second statement doesn’t actually help quantify the first, seeing as people generally aren’t sat on by elephants in their day-to-day life. Plus, I suspect most people don’t know how much a small, medium or large elephant weighs anyway.

The nearest I can come to it is being sat on by my 5yo son.

How many of him make up a medium elephant, and I’ll extrapolate?

    African or Asian?

Asian? When I was at school it was ‘Indian’. Is it now racist to refer to them as Indian?

MTBing gives me more of an all-over body workout.
Road riding does more for my endurance, which improves my MTBing.

    Generally.

    Is what I find, anyway.
