Is it recently that they’ve got smaller?

I’m a size 10 and have several pairs in size 10 from approx 3 years ago and they feel spot on

I’m just over 6 foot 2, running a Giant Reign XL at 495mm reach. Also have a YT Tues XL at 470mm reach.

I guess the Reign at 495 is not as long as some on here. But I’m not sure I’d want to go too much longer due to handling on tight sections

I noticed that in the manual and reckon it’s way too low. I run mine at 30% as I do with any other fork

Akers – hard to say for me if it’s better than a DHX2 as I’ve not tried one on the same bike.

I do think the Storia has a lot going for it though. First of all the hydraulic bump stop gives you that extra bit of support that you wouldn’t normally get with a coil. Second, it’s super light, I think its one if not the lightest coil shock you can buy. Then as mentioned you get that great level of service from Mojo, as well as 2 springs included in the price.

I’m sure the DHX2 feels amazing if setup right, but all the above for me makes it worth it

I’ve been to Finale loads, probably my favourite place to ride.

Although I haven’t been to BPW for about 18 months (so don’t know if it’s got a load of new stuff) I would rate Finale as being much harder and more technical than BPW. Trails such as Cacciatore, Madonna, little champery and cavatappi are definitely a step up.

From what I hear of Lake Guarda it’s supposed to be excellent and I’ve heard it’s not as steep as Finale. Maybe that’s the trails to the south as mentioned by alpin above.

I’ve also been helped by Jack at Mojo, their customer service has been amazing.

After buying my EXT Storia from them in September I’ve been tweaking and can’t quite get it right. They’ve been great on the phone, swapped a spring for me FOC, then also re-tuned my shock for me this week FOC with a one day turnaround time. Really impressed.

Spring rate I think is correct as I get 30% sag.

Part of my reason for the question is that I’m just wondering if this is part of the inherent ride characteristic of the frame – as I said it felt pretty similar on the super deluxe R coil. Its fine for big hits but in general just feels pretty firm. Maybe if that’s the case then it can be tuned out by Mojo.

I will also check the pivots although I’d be surprised if they needed attention as the frame was bought in Feb 2019.

Thanks all, that makes sense now.

The Storia does have a hydraulic bottom out but it’s unfortunately not adjustable. I don’t think that’s the problem though, landing off drops the shock feels amazing, you barely notice the landing. The problem is in general riding, the shock almost feels like it’s on lock out all the time, just very firm, despite playing with HSC/LSC.

I was just wondering if it’s down to the inherent nature of the frame, as it was the same with the previous shock (super deluxe r), but I guess that can be tuned out hopefully.

    Thanks everyone, all really helpful.

So am I correct then to interpret the leverage rate as progressive, but not overly progressive? I.e. if the curve starts high (3 in this case) does that mean the shock will move easily at first, moving through to the lower points on the curve, such as a value of 2ish, where the shock will meet more resistance in the linkage?

If that’s the case then I think there’s something up with my shock tune, as the bike feels very progressive to me. I binned the basic coil due to lack of adjustments on the compression side and have replaced this with the EXT Storia. Luckily this is through Mojo who are good enough to re-tune for free if it’s not right.

    Thank you,

That’s not the one I remember, as I thought it was a spreadsheet, but nevertheless I’ve found the info I was after so thank you.

Can someone please help me understand the linkage ratio / an issue for my bike? Just want to check I’ve understood it correctly. I have a 2018 Reign. The Reign historically, pre 2018, as I understand it, has always had quite a linear leverage ratio and has blown through its travel quite easily.

Mine, the 2018 version, which I know they have made more progressive and I do find to have a very progressive curve based on what I can tell. Am i correct on the link below that because its curve is quite low down in the LR graph, that this means its a progressive design?

    http://linkagedesign.blogspot.com/2017/11/giant-reign-275-2018.html

I guess if you calculate the average LR as 160mm / 62.5 = 2.56 is that considered to be progressive? If not maybe there is something up with my shock!

I’ve got the Joe Blow large pump, think it’s the Booster. Brilliant, great for general use and great for inflating tubeless.

I’ve also got a reasonably expensive Leyzne one which does in fact have a wooden handle. Would never buy one again though due to screw on valve head which is an absolute pain. Plus the gauge failed.

Thanks – I didn’t know how the negative chamber worked, hence the question over compatibility.

Although will it be able to recommend setup based on both high speed and low speed rebound?

Does anyone know please, are these compatible with Fox 36 Grip 2?

Damascus – thank you I’ll do that. It’s for an older PP Shan so I just need to check I can get some dropouts first

Sounds like I’ll be able to do this cheaper if I stick with Shimano.

My reasoning to want a full sram groupset was a sort of stop gap towards a new hardtail. I’ve got renewed interest in using it, but I know ultimately it probably needs replacing as it may be on the small side for me. So I thought if I end up using it enough and get back into hardtails, then I’ll sell it, keep the new modern groupset and get a nice new Kingdom frame next year! I now realise that’s completely flawed thanks to Boost….the old hardtail isn’t boost which sort of locks me in to old components unfortunately.

Good to know that I can go 11 speed on the hope hub, thanks

Thank you both for the help

Northwind – thanks that all makes sense and I think there seem to be a few reasonably priced on pinkbike at the mo.

What will make it or break it terms of price is if I need to change the cranks. Currently has a 2x setup and I’m hoping I’ll be back to bolt the sram chainring to the Shimano cranks

How big do the Endura mtr shells come up? Just wondering if you need to size up or not?

Warden is great for sloppy conditions.

Not as good as a Mud King though.

Personally I love the Mary for anything from dry to intermediate conditions, so it’s perfect for around September/October where it’s wet but not too bad.

But once you get to the real mud and slop, say Nov onwards, then that’s when tyres like the Mary and Shorty don’t cut it IMO. For the real slop you’ll need a proper mud tyre such as the Continental Mud King or the Dirty Dan, both of which are excellent.

Moshimonster – the advice was given after seeing me riding, specifically seeing me cornering.

In terms of how far angled back I had them, they were approximately aligned to the angle of the forks/head angle. So approx 65 degrees

Chief thanks that’s all making sense now, as the recommendation was to roll the bars forward and to fit a shorter stem.

Now I was a bit reluctant as the bike is big in terms of reach, and the existing stem was already short (40mm). But I’ve gone to rolling forward and a 35mm stem that I had spare and it feels great so far.

    Thanks all

Matty – no not DH all the time, trail riding with variety.

Jedi – thanks just watched the video. Do you not mean rolling the bars forward pops your elbows out though?

I’ve got code RSCs on my DH bike and Guides on my trail bike. I don’t reckon the Codes would be overkill for a trail bike and would get some myself if I hadn’t spent way too much money recently!

Thanks, that’s good to know about the small bump compliance

I’m not sure that CTS pack makes that much difference to me as it’s quite expensive to get all of those valves in one box.

The CTS system sounds great, but I’ve discovered after some research last night that the fork seems to be missing the usual LSC/HSC, there is just one progression adjuster which is perhaps putting me off slightly.

    Thank you both

Rik – that sounds really positive, especially about the mid stroke, that was the main bit I was curious about.

Sharkattack – I have very briefly tried a set at mojo when buying my EXT Storia. Unfortunately I spent the session fiddling with the Storia but didn’t get a chance to really get into the setup of the Selvas. Mojo are great but as they don’t open at the weekends I can’t get to see them for ages as I’m pretty much out of holiday at work. So I think I’m likely to buy based on reviews this time around.

I suppose the million dollar question is would I be nuts to buy the Selva Rs over the Fox 36 Grip 2? They are pretty much the same price

    jk1980

Bit surprised they charged you for an individual sachet of sealant, I see your point there, that is the most expensive way to do it.

Surprised to hear people saying Fox rather than Ohlins. I changed my Fox X2 on my DH Bike for an Ohlins coil and it’s awesome.

Interesting choice on the front. Grip 2 seems to have stepped things up a gear on the damping quality, so is a good choice. The new Ohlins “trail” range is supposed to be very good, but think I’m right in saying it’s not been out long.

Think I would go Ohlins coil on the back, Grip 2 on the front personally.

I completely see where you’re coming from moshimonster, although most 160mm bikes these days pedal up hills really well. That’s why for me my Reign works brilliantly as a versatile trail bike. It goes up hills fine, then is capable if harder/steeper stuff is on the same ride.

Would never want it to replace my DH bike though, as it’s less capable on certain trails

Thanks for clearing it up for me.

If it’s similar to slackening the head angle by a very small amount then I can definitely live with that

I do tend to notice small changes.

Can someone please let me know – what change will this make?

    jk1980

Thank you I think that must have been it. Really not very obvious!

Additionally, in case anyone else gets stuck with this, I was trying to poke the cable out when i could see the end of it. Instead, the only way I could get it out was to shift so that I couldn’t see the cable end, then I was able to dislodge it.

Does anyone have one of these 2018 onwards Reigns?

    jk1980

I’m getting 30% sag though from the 450 spring, so I would have thought that’s the correct spring rate

I went a couple of months ago and did the DH uplift. Not sure what the trails are called, but 1 black open and 1 red (with 2 start options) all of which go through that tunnel at the bottom. Good fun, was running nicely.

Tom – yep pretty much what I said and he wants to pull out if I can’t provide that info. Seems to think the contract is worthless without that.

Neal – He wants the guy who’s picking it up to witness the receipt, i.e. id have to show his mate my driving license/passport to prove I didn’t make it up.

Thank you, sounds like I’m right to be sceptical
