I would have recommended a vitus nucleus which is very well specced for the price….. But I see they’re hard to get hold of

Thanks. Yes tmb467 it’s the approved 3x I’m looking at.
    3x
Which you can see is full of fully assembled bikes. Good to know they won’t fit larger bikes without the wheel off.

Weirdly, the 2x has slightly larger internal dims of 5’11’ so maybe that’s the one to go for despite the awkward end door.

I use cycle.travel to plan my routes. Very easy to use and export tracks to other apps but not an app itself unfortunately. Not an issue for me as Id hate to plan a route on my mobile phone rather than big pc screen.

I have st i29s on my vitus nucleus……..desperately need to change them to save some weight. Unfortunately its a boost front and non boost rear, making buying a set a pain in the arse. May look at the crossmax pro mentioned here or stans…

I tend to eat porridge and a banana about an hour before ride. I take with me calorie rich foods in my pack, like flapjacks, and maybe eat 1 every hour depending on how long the ride is (sub 20 miles I dont take food), this tends to keep me replenished. I just drink water, at least a litre again depending on length.
I also carry jelly babies for an emergency quickly absorbed sugar hit…..even if its just a psychological lift, it feels like it makes a massive difference when your tired.

Cheers for the advice guys. Speed kings look interesting.
Them and the g ones are mighty expensive though. Hopefully I’m not buying some wafer thin thorn magnet.
Intriguing that I might be able to go smaller than recommend, I’ll look into that.

cheers for the replies, I think for 29mm rims Ill need at least a 2.1″ width tyre, so some of those options are out. Shame big apple isnt in a 27.5″.

Cheers Craig I’ll give it a butchers

I also found plotaroute.com which is another desk top site for creating and exporting routes also with turn by turn directions.

Whitestone I wasn’t suggesting turning your brain off, or that satnavs are infallible. I’m just looking for a useful set of tools as a beginner, who hasn’t yet made the jump to a pukka bike GPS computer, whilst also understanding that sh*t in = Shi*t out for any mapping software.
Cheers slackboy I’ll check out mapmyride and back country nav.

    Cheers.
I tried a variety at the weekend on a 28mile jaunt in wilts.
I love cycle.travel for its ability to quickly create routes and export them in almost any format. It also has a neat ‘suggest a ride’ which throws up random routes over a specified distance. Downside is there’s no app.
I tried cyclewithgps, which looks incredible but wants you to pay for almost every basic feature. It does have turn by turn voice though.
From a recommendation on Strava I found bike tracker by pc ability on Google play store. It piggybacks off cyclewithgps and provides voice route guidance and progress for free! It really worked well even getting me back on track when I went wrong.
Finally I found viewranger app very useful to check as a map since it has Has multiple map types including open cycle ones (even os maps if you pay), so it’s richer than stravas mapping.

Phew. So it seems I shall be using cycle.travel to create routes, upload them to cycle with GPS, use bike tracker to give voice guidance and view ranger as a map……. All while recording the track on Strava lol.
