who ever says taking weed doesn’t effect your metal health are talking shite

What makes you say that? If that were true then you’d expect a much higher proportion of the population to have mental health issues, as it’s such a ubiquitous drug.

I only shop at the local farmers’ market and transport my purchases home on my bamboo cargo bike. The rest of you are destroying the world.

    Active pickups? That’s a bit early 90s isn’t it?

We’ve just replaced some EMG active pickups on a partscaster with some nice Fender Custom Shop pickups – looks and sounds a lot nicer IMO.

Summers is almost as big a dick as Sting. Some good songs, but veered too much towards MOR for me.

Rich from Wind Hill posted the survey link earlier in the week and I added my voice. Could be a great spot.

DHF is lighter and less draggy than a DHR2 on the rear but doesn’t grip as well. Not a massive difference, though, so you won’t die.

I’m not sure that the tough approach is very effective. It reminds me a bit of the next door neighbour in American Beauty. Chances are he’ll either rebel against it, or, if you’re so tough that he can’t, he’ll just go off the rails completely when you no longer have any control over him.

I think you need to fully identify the root cause of his behaviour. For most people between 16 and 25 drugs are hedonistic and/or experimental and don’t lead to disaster or habitual use later in life. For your son, it may be that he’s using them just to fit in, or be cool (don’t underestimate the influence of these factors), or it may be that he’s using them as a crutch. Address the causes, not the symptoms.

I think the way news is reported is inherently bad for our mental health. It focuses exclusively on the negative and reinforces the almost unconscious notion that terrible things are always happening and that these things will affect you directly, which, of course, is untrue.

I think that it’s possible to remain informed without overdosing on news programmes – just drastically limit your exposure to them.

I flat spotted my rear wheel quite badly when I cased a big step up. Local wheel builder improved it but it’s not perfect. I still use it but with a tube and it’s not really noticeable. Will eventually replace it when the time comes.

I’ve thought about upgrading, but I’m not really sure that the 5t difference between 11 and 12 speed XT is enough of a draw for me to spend three or four times the cost of replacing like with like.

Interested to know other people’s rationales for going to 12 speed.

    He is correct tho

99% of the time in these situations the item has been delivered and it’s the customer who hasn’t realised someone else in their household has received it or that it’s been delivered next door, etc.

It’s much, much easier just to contact the courier in question yourself first rather than bothering the company, who will just do the same thing except that it will take longer because they’re dealing with a hundred other things.

    Was the parcel…

    All irrelevant.

It’s the sender’s responsibility to ensure delivery. If you haven’t received it, that’s their problem to sort out. Get on to them (not UPS).

You sound like the sort of customer we love in e-commerce.

The BBC is pretty poor, really. I can think of only a handful of shows commissioned by the BBC in the last 20 years that have actually been good. And when the shows are actually good, they make 2 series of 6 episodes and that’s it. In contrast, they make millions of hours of puerile fluff, like Eastenders, Casualty, shit daytime TV, etc, etc.

If they launched a streaming service with this quality of programming on it and charged £11 a month it would be a massive flop.

29ers definitely roll better over more technical stuff. Don’t like them on jumps/drops/etc, where they feel cumbersome.’Taller riders than me (I’m 5’9) don’t seem to find this, though.

As for racing, I’m not 100% sure about 29ers. Troy Brosnan did pretty well this year on a 27.5 bike, and was slower when he tried a 29er. Danny Hart won on a mullet bike and Bruni won the double on one.

I used to think it was the early days of the sport – when you could turn up to a race and do the XC and DH race on the same bike.

However, in the last few years I’ve realised that it’s much better now – trails are better, bikes are miles better, and there are great places, like Wind Hill and Revs, to ride.

I wish I had have read this thread before I dedicated my life to studying ancient manuscripts at the feet of professors (all at mainstream, world-renowned universities; NOT some wacky “Bible colleges”) who themselves had studied at the feet of professors before them – all of whom have been subject to the review process by scholars in corresponding fields who are not themselves Christian, or even necessarily people of faith, but none of whom across centuries of scholarship have managed to distil the existence of Jesus down to the admirably simple formulae conjured up by the good folk of STW.

If only I – and all of them – had have had access to internet fora and social media years ago, we could have saved ourselves so much time.

Thanks, though. Better late than never.

    Well said.

There’s an annoying tendency on here for people to distill a bit of stuff they read on the internet then pronounce it as gospel (pun intended). The truth is much more complex.

You should be able to change travel with a new air shaft – I think they go up to 120mm with the SID. It’s a pretty easy job on Lyriks, so I can’t imagine it would be any harder on your forks.

Yep – I do this throughout the winter and it’s great for getting body position correct on corners and for learning to pump properly. It’s hard work on an enduro bike, though – could really do with a BMX or DJ bike..

Fox Launch Pro pads are pretty good for the money. Got mine from Evans to replace some older Bliss pads that have had their day. They were a bit more than online, but I was able to try them on, resulting in my buying a size bigger than I would have expected.

I’ve never understood why people don’t wear elbow pads – your elbows and forearms are the first things to get bashed to pieces when you come off, and the pads don’t get so hot as to be particularly uncomfortable.

I’m not sure I accept the Solstice as the first day of winter – seems daft. The meteorological definition of winter as the three coldest months on average (December, January, February) seems much more reflective of reality.

The 2020 Nukeproof 29ers are much better than those from previous years; geometry and suspension are totally sorted

How would you describe the previous years’ suspension vs 2020, out of interest?

I have my own ideas (having owned one), but not everyone agrees with me. Geometry was awesome though, maybe just needed slight tweaks to head & seat angles.

There’s more mid stroke support, a bit more travel and the head angle is slacker and reach is longer. The old one never felt as good as the 27.5 Mega at the rear, but now it’s much better.

We’ve got a Strat neck from a partscaster that we’ve taken to bits, if you fancy going down that route. Might be easier building a body and attaching a pre-made neck to it.

OK – this lot has just come in from Gardelli:

Bynekere Estate, sugarcane ferm. lot (India) 250g
Holiday Coffee, San Ignacio (Peru) 250g
    La Candelilla (Costa Rica) 250g
    Tolu Batak, Sumatra (Indonesia) 250g
    Banko Gotiti (Ethiopia) 250g
    Nensebo (Ethiopia) 250g

Further details are on Gardelli’s site (it’s much more expensive on there, though). I can do any those apart from the Nensebo for £10 a bag. the Nensebo is £11. Shipping is £2.50.

All coffees are rated at 87.75 and above (specialty coffee starts at 80 points).

    Cheers,

I measure by volume never short measures, would you notice 15g either way by taste?

Yes! Even if that’s a typo and you meant 1.5g, there’s quite a difference in extraction between a 15g input and a 16.5g one at the same grind level.

    never ever weigh the coffee

You’ll never get any consistency if you don’t weigh. It’s a bit like being a baker and just chucking in random amounts of flour because it ‘looks about right’.

I have to be honest some of the flavours they claim to be in there are complete fantasy!

Tasting notes are a guide, and will be greatly affected by how you brew the coffee personally. It’s much easier to perceive all the flavours when the coffee isn’t diluted with milk. Lower TDS espressos (ie with longer brew ratios) also allow more flavours to be sensed, as the strength doesn’t overpower the pallate. So, ristretto bad, lungo good.

I occasionally use Artisan roast steampunk but would only buy beans as you order a flat white and unless you drive an old vdub, have a hairy pus or look like a dude they think you know nothing about coffee and give you it lukewarm by the time they bring it over

Are you one of those people who wants the milk in their flat white hotter than the surface of the sun? If so, you should consider the fact that at over 65C the heat changes the milk proteins and creates a very sour flavour. There’s a noticeable improvement in flavour by texturing the milk only up to 55C, which IMO is pretty much the optimum temperature for drinking anyway.

Maybe I should pop round to Collona and grab a bag to see what I’m missing… Or will I not get the benefit with a bean to cup machine?

As long as your machine can grind fine enough, and your water isn’t horrible in terms of bicarb, then you’ll notice a difference with Colonna beans over bog standard stuff. The main problems happen when bean to cup grinders can’t get the grind fine enough to extract a light roast coffee properly.

I had a crazy old posh great aunt who sent me a suspender belt for Christmas when I was 14 (I’m male). I think it was meant for my female cousin, but not sure that it was appropriate for her either, given she was only 15 at the time.

I’d like to think the local councils make some well needed cash from these but I rather suspect that the only people making any useful money are the organisers/promoters who I suspect are a massive national chain

    Does anyone know for sure?

It’s a mix – both organisations make money from it.

It’s not a case of the ‘poor cash strapped council’ being ripped off by the nasty capitalist organisers; both are as bad as each other in most cases. I wouldn’t trust Bath Council with Monopoly money, let alone the real stuff.
