I would find it very difficult to watch without shouting ‘planes don’t fly like that’ a few times an episode

    In what way?

I have had a bit of experience with historic aircraft volunteering with the Shuttleworth Trust, spending some time talking to the pilots who fly their veteran and vintage aircraft. The cgi that I saw showed Bf109G models manoeuvring in a way that would be impossible for two related reasons. First they were doing rolls at a speed of rotation that wasn’t possible for any aircraft of the era ( although possible now with something like an Extra 300 aerobatic plane)and Messerschmitt’s in particular at speed, and then pulling turns that would have ripped the wings off if the pilot actually had the strength to try it. It is common with many films though, Pearl Harbor was a shocker in that respect.

I saw the trailer. Whilst most of the reviews have been very positive if the cgi in the trailer is representative then I would find it very difficult to watch without shouting ‘planes don’t fly like that’ a few times an episode and upsetting the dog. Now some might regard that as petty/vexatious but it’s more a defying physics thing for me rather than historical accuracy.

My father is a classic case as to why conscription may not be effective as a’kick up the arse’ as many people seem to think.

He was conscripted into the REME via National Service, was sent to Korea and after months getting to the front line  on a slow troop ship then a three day train/truck journey the first thing his new CO said to him was ‘I don’t want you, I want professionals’ and he and his fellow NS personnel were treated as second class people for the 14 months he was there. It has put him off all authority figures and particularly the military and passed that on to me.

I have had three black cars, all bought because they were the best I could find/afford at the time. I would not have another unless I had no real option for the reasons outlined above. Strangely enough they were also the three least reliable cars that I have owned, particularly the Citroen BX 16v…coincidence?

Vallorbe files. Specifically a half round 2nd cut tapered file that was £40 but it just does the job and has done for years.

You could try a similar thickness polycarbonate sheet. Much tougher than acrylic but more expensive. To avoid splitting drilling acrylic you can clamp two pieces of scrap wood either side of and drill through making sure that you use a new spot each time so that the acrylic is properly supported

Having driven both, I would have the Fabia, although I think the Scala I drove  had ‘sports’ suspension which didn’t suit it at all.

Visit the Pantheon. It’s been a long time since I went to Rome, and that building is the one I remember most clearly.

My new car doesn’t have a handbrake, and even when I sit at the lights with my foot off the brake in ‘hold’ mode, the frickin’ high level brake light blares away

This annoys me too. On my Golf if you set the electric handbrake when stationary it turns the lights off. I always do this now

VW’s are notoriously picky about cables. I had exactly the same problem with my 2018 Golf and an iPhone, it has been cured by buying a VW branded cable (at a price). Hasn’t dropped out in the three years since I bought it so worth it in my opinion

The best alcoholic drink that I have ever had was a very generous Springbank 30yr old whiskey given to me by an old friend of my partner the first time I was taken to met him. I looked it up afterward and realised that, at current prices, it was about £60 worth and that I would never taste it again.

I have a screwdriver that came from my 1985 Mk 2 VW Golf Gti that I owned in the late 80’s, one of those with a plastic handle and a reversible Philips/ flat shank. I still use it most weeks for various jobs as its useful to pick it when I’m not sure what the screw head I might encounter on a job is. It’s got scars and the plating on the shank is going but it still works.

I left Lloyds after 35 years and moved to Nationwide. I wish that I had done it earlier. Very happy with Nationwide’s service and they have a local branch.

The subject is slowly dying imo,

The sixth Form college I was at closed their AS/A level  D&T and 3-D art courses in 2013 for exactly the reasons you gave convert although there were other issues as well. Recruiting too few students, maintenance costs going through the roof and the cost of materials was becoming prohibitive. I realised that it was becoming unviable when our heat treatment area failed its annual inspection/ maintenance and was told there was no money to get it fixed/ upgraded. Which made teaching the two jewellery courses I ran a bit tricky mid year not to mention the Product Design A level with the students halfway through their second year with projects already decided.

The same had also happened to both our other local 6th form colleges a year or two before, although some independent and 11-18 schools did offer A level within 10 miles or so.

I am surprised that disc sanders are used in schools now as they were so often misused. If I recall we were told to remove them in the early 1990’s in the LA I worked in and when I moved to another college in a different authority in 1999 there were none in their workshops either.

The most relaxing car that I have owned was an 2009 Audi A4 V6 Tdi on standard suspension. Quiet, effortless and good seats. My current car (VW Golf) has good seats and ACC but is noisier.
I am also a fan of ACC, in flowing traffic it does make it more relaxing a once you learn it’s foibles.

Working at height? Industrial safety? What is this?

My brother and I had to have a stern conversation with our 92year old father about going up a high stepladder  and standing on the top step in his mules whilst helping his grandson fix a solar panel to his van’s roof.

We have two, a 10 year old Brother laser monochrome for day to day stuff and a similar age Epson inkjet colour for occasional use (using generic rather than Epson ink cartridges- £1.50 per cartridge is more acceptable than £18.50)

…once you have fibre into the property, does it really make any difference what letterhead is on the bill?

It depends on how the local setup has been implemented.

As part of the deal fastershire ( Herefordshire and Gloucestershire rural broadband) made only Gigaclear and their affiliates can use the infrastructure they have installed as an commercial  enterprise with substantial local government support initially so you can’t use others such as Plusnet etc. So choice is limited at present. Which is a problem as our neighbours who have had it installed have had significant problems with very poor quality work and have found it really difficult to get any sensible response from the company

None of Restore Trusts candidates were elected, all had about 45-48000 votes but the threshold for being elected was 77000

the resolution to improve cycling and pedestrian access was also passed by a huge majority

I used to eat them quite often as I have an intolerance ( gives me hives) to any cocoa products and as a kid they were an easily obtained treat when everyone else tucked into their chocolate bars.

I know that they are not popular but a used Pentax dslr can use any Pentax lens as any image stabilisation etc.  is done in the body rather than the lens and so you can buy quite reasonable telephoto lenses cheaply.

second hand bodies also tend to be cheaper than equivalent Nikon and Canon equipment. The more modern ones also quite well weatherproofed. The downsides are that the cameras tend not to be as well specced as some others, but as a cheap starting point might be worth a look at

If it’s outside the central 3/4 of the tread then it’s considered a major repair. Most tyre fitters won’t do major repairs

Personally I wouldn’t be happy just leaving it- get it checked out as said a few times above.

Android Auto only works if the phone is connected with a cable despite the touchscreen recognising the phone via Bluetooth.  Is this normal?

    certainly common on many vehicles.

My mother died on my 56th  birthday. The only good thing about that day was that myself, my twin brother and my sister were there- she managed to get back from Italy in time . Birthdays are more difficult than they used to be-we try and spend it with our dad.

What do you guys think of DSG generally?

The simple answer is not much. I have driven many DSG vehicles from a petrol Skoda Rapid to a diesel Tiguan with numerous Audi’s in between. The only one that I enjoyed was an Audi R8 V10 but that was probably as much for the car rather than the gearbox and to be honest the R8 V8 manual I drove was nicer.
I particularly disliked the dull witted response to slow speed manoeuvres, exacerbated if on a slope although admittedly that was worse on the earlier 6speed boxes. Another gripe is the way they can be clunky in some slow moving traffic situations. They seem to suit petrol cars better than diesels but none are as pleasant to use as a well set up modern conventional torque converter auto.

All in my opinion of course.

West Dean college which must be quite close if you are near Singleton. They do a number of blacksmithing courses. Alternatively you could try one of their jewellery/ silversmithing courses as the tools are much easier and cheaper to buy to carry on after the course has finished. Then you could make presents for all the family….

I have been to three courses there and each was very well run and the facilities are good

We had the same issue in 2017. We went through Hiscox. Its renovation/ extension cover you need. It was considerably more expensive and with reduced level of cover ( contents not covered for theft if workmen in the building etc.)

We didn’t have to make a claim so can’t comment on whether they are any good.

I am often surprised by how some drivers seem to concentrate only on the car immediately ahead rather than having awareness of those two or three ahead of that which allows for better anticipation  of changes in speed etc. This was taught to me by my driving instructor in 1982 as a basic skill right from the start. Perhaps it isn’t in the current curriculum of driving schools?
