I am also a bit of a Phillip K Dick-head but have never read The Man in the High Castle, so will be getting on it as I have started the TV series.
My current thinky book is A Brief History of Seven Killings by Marlon James, and my non-thinky books are the Jack Reacher series. The Feynman book mentioned earlier is excellent too.
jimoiseauFree MemberI think you’ve already got all the advice you need, but my 2p nonetheless:
If she already wants to do psychology at uni then studying psychology a-level isn’t going to help her decide. Studying other subjects that leave the psychology option open will expose her to more things that she may decide she prefers.
Also, if she does end up only doing 3 subjects then the one she should drop is French. I studied French to GCSE and then didn’t look at it again until I was in work, when I was offered a job move to France. A-level French would not have made moving to France and learning “proper” French required to do a technical job any easier IMO. Only worth it now if she’s pretty sure she wants to study abroad on the Erasmus scheme (or leave open the option of studying modern languages), and even then she can probably study enough language as options at uni without doing it at A-level to be able to study abroad.
jimoiseauFree MemberDon’t see why the UK should not also achieve something similar.
Maybe because we have spent years voting in governments that wouldn’t even consider this level of public expenditure whatever the benefits?
jimoiseauFree MemberI’m unfathomably good at detecting confirmation bias. I can smell it.
jimoiseauFree MemberEating man food. The same as normal food except it comes in black packaging with PROTEIN somewhere on the outside.
jimoiseauFree MemberAlso given that the circular runway is equivalent to 3 runways in length, it would take up a large area, comparatively.
I don’t see that – if a runway has length L, you’re getting 3 runways worth in a circle of diam 95% of the Length of a single runway. Circ = pi x D = 3L, D = 3L/pi = 0.95L
To have 3 runways in a traditional configuration side by side, using a quick google of a few major airports with multiple runways indicates needing about 1/2 a runway length separation, so 3 runways is a square of LxL which is clearly more than a circle of diam 0.95L
Isn’t the original post you quoted just a simplification of the phrase “the circular runway is equivalent to pi runways in length”?
jimoiseauFree MemberPresumably there would be a small straight section attached, like the 100m bit on an olympic track.
I think the main problem would be landing, you’d have to come in pretty fast and then sharply decelerate while turning in order to avoid going off the edge. I’m not saying it’s inevitable there’d be an accident but the added risk of one would put airport designers off. Of course they could always add a circular one as a takeoff runway at an airport that already has a straight one to land on.
jimoiseauFree MemberJust to clear up some of the inaccuracies around Irish citizenship mentioned earlier. From the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs:
My Grandad was born in Ireland but neither of my parents have Irish Passports. Am I entitled to apply for Irish citizenship?
Yes. An application for Irish citizenship through Foreign Births Registration can be submitted by any person with a grandparent born on the island of Ireland even if your parents do not hold Irish passports.jimoiseauFree MemberInstalled OnePlus’s Oxygen OS 4.0 on my OP3 which their upgrade to Nougat. Can’t find anything that I’d actually consider an improvement in the new OS. The split screen stuff is nice, but can’t see myself using it.
OnePlus have however made some nasty changes to how notifications work (e.g. https://www.change.org/p/oneplus-bring-back-the-default-vibrations-in-op2-and-op3-3t-letusvibrate )
These problems are with Oxygen rather than Android itself, but I’m planning to downgrade to get away from them.
I’ve also found that the update has removed options on my OP3. Now I have the “silent” mode set to vibrate and I switch between normal and silent, so I’ve effectively lost the DND mode because I never use it. I’d much rather have DND vibrate with no sound and then silent neither vibrate nor make a sound but that’s not an option. It’s not enough of an issue to have bothered downgrading though.
jimoiseauFree MemberThe Backyard Brewhouse, round the corner from where I grew up. Decent beer.
jimoiseauFree MemberFor a cheap lunch as you wander around the Marais I’d recommend “L’As du Falafel”. According to a sign in the window it’s Lenny Kravitz’s favourite falafel place, the queue will look dauntingly huge but it goes quickly as you order and pay in the queue. Closed on Saturdays as it’s in the Jewish quarter.
Also worth a visit, towards the north of the Marais not far from Centre Pompidou is the cat cafe. No more expensive than most cafes, full of cats. May be worth booking (which you can do online).
A not very Parisian one that might please the offspring is a Star Wars/Sci-Fi themed crepe place just over the river from Notre Dame.
jimoiseauFree MemberI get a 20″ framed 29er in my kia ceed 5 door with both wheels on. Don’t get how people with estates still have to take the wheel off. It takes a bit of wiggling and the handlebar down the side of the driver’s seat but it’s far less hassle than taking a wheel off, fitting a brake block and having to remember to bring the axle.
So my advice would be get something you want to own (not a kia ceed) and wrestle your bike in any old way you can 😀
jimoiseauFree MemberI worked with a guy in France whose last name was Cagnet, pronounced like Kanyé. If the brits wanted to talk about him behind his back we just referred to him as Mr West.
In Colombia and other South American countries there are people called Usnavy after parents saw it stencilled onto things that washed up on the beach (U S Navy). Possibly an urban legend.
jimoiseauFree MemberEveryone I know thinks The Lobster was crap. I think it’s one of the best films of the last 10 years or so.
jimoiseauFree MemberA man called BBHT
Told the forum he didn’t like tea
But the STW masses
Didn’t offer tea classes
Just set about taking the PjimoiseauFree MemberThe best wine money could buy was (IMO) proper nasty
That’s the best Beaujolais nouveau money can buy. Which is all proper nasty.
Newly bought expensive wine with cork: probably meant to be cellared for (at least) a few years before being drunk.
The whole point of Beaujolais nouveau is that you buy it and drink it on the same day. In 5 years living in France I met one person who actually enjoyed the stuff, everyone else just did it because it was a tradition and an excuse to get pissed at work on a Thursday in November. It’s a bit like people who don’t like turkey still eating it at Christmas.
jimoiseauFree MemberOne Plus 3 user here but used to have a Moto G 3rd gen. On the moto both slots could use 4g but only one of them at a time, so the switch is via software only and as mentioned only takes 10 seconds. I haven’t tried it on the OP3 yet but I will be soon I think, to try out various networks as 3 signal is crap in my new flat. I can come back and update on how it works on the OP3 if you like?
Edit: A couple of clarifications: The Moto G3 wasn’t sold as a duel sim phone in the UK but was in Colombia 8) and having googled it, it seems the OP3 works in the same way as my G3 did.
In practise, that just means you shouldn’t try using it with 3 unless the 3 sim is for data only, as that sim will be unable to make calls or texts when not selected for data (as 3 don’t have a corresponding 2g network like the other providers do). Also be careful with third party providers (tesco etc) as they may only buy 3g/4g services from their supplier network and not 2g.jimoiseauFree Member4g is generally widely available in France, you’ll be able to get it from Orange who probably have the widest coverage (as they bought the old France Telecom) and the most shops around if you have a problem. Other suppliers are available etc etc. Generally French telecoms are good in my experience so I wouldn’t worry too much if you don’t have a wide choice of sim cards from different operators once you get to the airport.
jimoiseauFree MemberMy only absolutely essential one that hasn’t been mentioned yet has got to be Underworld – Born Slippy.
jimoiseauFree MemberI know this is classic STW oneupmanship but I’ve actually done it on a triple tandem 8) fantastic day out!
jimoiseauFree MemberSpy. Usually don’t like Melissa McCarthy, thought she was the weakest link in bridesmaids, but it’s actually really entertaining and quite funny.
jimoiseauFree MemberI don’t currently ride at all as I moved to South America, but I’m back in the UK after 11 months on Wednesday and will be going for my 3rd ever ride on my new-ish Jekyll ASAP. On STW as it’s the only thing that keeps me sane without my bikes.
jimoiseauFree MemberI do the Rippetoe recommended holding a breath all the way through and breathing out and in again at the bottom with the weight on the floor.
I used to have this problem, but found on the starting strength forum someone recommending not taking too big a breath. I now take a sort of half-volume breath at the bottom and haven’t had any problems since. Also works well if you get a similar problem when overhead pressing. I think i probably fill my lungs to about 40-50% of what I used to.
jimoiseauFree MemberI think it depends if the new phone will have marshmallow pre-installed when you get it, because when I installed it on my moto x2 and my girlfriend’s g3 it said that Moto migrate had been retired because marshmallow covers all of its functionality. However, I’m not sure either migrate or marshmallow itself cover transferring saved games etc to a new phone. My advice would be to try it with migrate if the new phone is on lollipop and then root after upgrading to marshmallow if it doesn’t work.
jimoiseauFree MemberI’m on a large Jekyll, from the dimensions I can find online the integra should just about go all the way in. The issue is really how high that then makes it at full extension.
jimoiseauFree MemberLearn languages (both spoken and programming)
Watch a lot of films and a few decent seriesjimoiseauFree MemberI’ve got a 2006 Norco six, it’s still completely stock apart from replacing the criminally bad Hayes sole brakes with cheap shimanos. Basic Fox Van R coil on FSR, so pedal bob isn’t the word. Pogo stick cheap OEM Marz up front and rapid rise 9spd. It hovers around 17kg depending on what tyres are on. It was my only full sus until getting a cheap Jekyll from Paul’s a few months ago, suffice to say I spent a lot of time on my hardtail before then 😆
My dad can still be seen trundling around Sutton Park on it from time to time, full sus helps his back.
jimoiseauFree MemberIf either of you with the Lev Integra 150mm could measure from the bottom of the collar to the seat rails at fully compressed it’d be much appreciated. Online it seems to vary between 50mm and 57mm quoted. I’m running 195mm height on a 125 reverb and could push it to 200mm to fit the 150mm Lev, but I think 207mm might be pushing it a bit far…
jimoiseauFree MemberAt the moment, 3 Cordilleras 6.47 IPA. It’s a special edition though and is starting to peter out on the shelves so may be going back to their Mestiza American Pale Ale soon.
jimoiseauFree MemberI’ve lived abroad for the last 5 years and am moving back in a month 🙁 luckily I’m eligible for an Irish passport so I’ll be getting that sorted to be able to get out again whenever I want/need to. I feel for all of you without that option.
jimoiseauFree Member“Yourself” as a misplaced attempt at politeness, as in “I’ll give this back to yourself when I’m finished”.
This. See also people “ironically” using the word thou in an attempt to sound old fashioned and formal, when “thou” was historically the informal (equivalent to tu in French and Spanish) and “you” was formal (vous or usted).
