All well here thanks. Last year I finally married my long suffering other half after 19 yrs together! Still riding and doing the odd long distance stuff but not a patch on your challenge!
What is spooky is that I haven’t looked at STW for literally months, especially as I ride more road than dirt these days, but saw your post.
Hope all goes well and I’m sure you’ll smash it!
PS say hello back to George
jimmersFree MemberDone. Good luck!
It was an honour knowing Keith. I can remember running the Meon Valley plod with Keith and I believe you were running it as well IIRC. It absolutely chucked it down. Keith didn’t bat an eyelid just cracked on!
Best wishes to his family and son.
jimmersFree MemberThanks all. Had a look at previous post and found a link to CRC selling Goodridge cabling. Will have a try of these.
jimmersFree MemberI’ve got a CdA 20. Great bike for the money.
I’ve got a fixie for commuting so I use this for off-roading and dabbling in local cx races.
1×10 gearing with SRAM x-7 mech on the back so a bit tougher than a roadie mech. Wheels are a bit heavy but with the saving in money you can a new wheelset easy enough for racing and swap over to stock wheels for commuting.
Have also been out on proper MTB terrain with the bike and (almost) kept up with full-bouncers.
jimmersFree MemberAthletes trained by British Cycling coaches have won practically everything there is to win in road and track cycling over the last few years.
I’m sold! Going to switch over the BC zones and see how that compares.
jimmersFree MemberSome good points whitestone, my threshold HR is calculated from an FTP, I have then applied the Zone 2 calculation.
It does seems about right as when I am at 75% of FTP this is bordering on the high Z2 / low Z3 for HR. Looking at this chart it does spot on.
This is fine when on the road with the PM, but when riding off road or on the fixed without a PM it seems that the TSS vs Trimp score don’t correlate too well as the Z2 for the Joe’s zones is quite high compared to the BC ones.
I think the underlying question is exactly what is a Zone 2 ride (rhetorical question alert)?
jimmersFree MemberI am going to change my HR Zones to the BC setup though combine zone 5 & 6. Thinking being that whilst doing hard intervals I will be focussing on power rather than HR (due to HR lag).
Though this will not change the suffer score and Fitness and Freshness chart for historical ride. Though I have this which is workaround into forcing Strava in recalculating the values. Going to see how it looks afterwards.
jimmersFree MemberThe Joe Friel zones look very narrow to me and would be really hard to keep to.
This is what I find, especially on the turbo. I have been using the Fitness & Freshness chart on Strava which shows TSS and Trimp styles scores combined. Whem I ride without a power meter the HR Trimp values (Suffer Score), I believe, is derived from the HR Zones. I am finding that the Fitness level is not going up enough even though my volume has increased. I am thinking this may be because I have been using Joe’s Zone and Zone 2 / 3 workouts are being under represented possibly.
jimmersFree Member+1 Nexus Media Importer
Doesn’t require a device to be rooted.
jimmersFree MemberNo problem Pete. I’ve got a Tricross SS that has 53cm top tube (same as 50cm CDA) but is a 52cm frame size hence the question.
Anyway it’s a cracking bike. Already been bike packing and kept up with MTBers on it. Got a cross race on Sunday. Definitely “big grin” riding kind of bike!
jimmersFree MemberHi Pete,
I’ve got a CDA 2015 model and I am in between sizes. My road bike is a 52 and the CDA is a 52. Though I could probably ride a 50. If i may ask what is the reach from nose of saddle to handlebars compare between your road bike and your Genesis? The Genesis fits well though got the saddle forward to max.
Cheers,
James
jimmersFree MemberThanks for all the replies. I will be signing up with Bluehosting as I get simple hosting on a LAMP box with SSH and spam filtering for just less than £45.
Alexxx, the current server is a custom build on Digital Ocean using the $5 per month option. WordPress runs fine, it is the iRedMail that falls over constantly due to the memory requirement of the SPAM / AV filters. The memory has been optimised to a ridiculous level even to degree of converting the MySQL engine to MYISAM only and removing the InnoDB engine.
jimmersFree MemberHaving spend £100’s on breathable jackets that don’t last long. I’ve now bought two of these, one for the road and one for MTBing.
They are as breathable as a crisp packet but then so was the £100 Montane jacket I puchased last.
jimmersFree MemberI ride with the Hargroves lot. Mostly on a Wednesday. They are a laid back club which suits me fine coming from an MTB background.
I believe the other clubs are more structured with more stuff going on though.
jimmersFree MemberReferring to sis-in-law going for long walks with the dog…”she’s been fornicating with her dog again”
Eating something spicy…”hmmm this has bit of a snatch”
jimmersFree MemberI’ve got Ubuntu on my Netbook. Works fine on there and it connects to my iStuff without needing iTunes (which I loathe).
My recommendation would be to stick with 12.04 LTS. This the long term stable version. I’ve tried the more recent ones but these can buggy especially with weird hardware you get on laptops. They install ok, but when you update software it can cause some things to break.
jimmersFree Member2.5 miles each way. Casual dress code helps so I only change from jeans to baggy shorts for the commute. Top half I just wear what I am wearing for the day.
Don’t pedal fast enough to get sweaty.
jimmersFree MemberIf you can’t full travel it most likely that too oil was put into the damper side. Forks are sensitive to how much oil is put into the oil damper. Download the Rockshox service manuals and use a syringe to measure the oil.
On the u-turn side the adjustment know may have a rubber o-ring under the knob and held down by the circlips. The older Rockshox fork used piss oil out of these areas. No rubber o-ring will make this worse. You will probably need to get a replacement part or buy a knackered pair off eBay and cannibalise.
jimmersFree MemberMy pennies worth. Bought a second hand road bike many years ago. Guessed the size. Top tube reach was ok. Tried different stems and all. Thought the setup was fine until I did a century. My god the pain!
Sold it.
Didn’t bother with the dark side for many years until I bought a bike from Planet X. I had a Retul bike fit ( half price with bike purchase) to double check bike fit. New bike spot on. Did the Fred Whitton and a 200km Audax and no problems with pain.
I have been MTBing for donkeys years but knew shite about roadie stuff. My opinion is if you are paying serious money to kit I wanted to make it was spot on and didn’t become an excuse for failing to observe the fifth rule!
jimmersFree MemberCheers all. Had a look at the Fulcrum 3 vs RS80. Will probably order the RS80s due to no weight limit and reviews from searching on other forums.
jimmersFree MemberGarmins fix was to run an app over your route files to add extra points every x meters, an extra faff and filling up your watch which was never an issue with the 305
Second this. Although I found a quick workaround. I use the following site
Then select the following option. This adds additional waypoints automatically.
I use the site to convert GPX files to CRS file for uploading to the Garmin so it doesn’t take any extra time.
My experience with the 310XT is that it is a good unit for cycling and running but can be buggy. I had to send a unit back as the time was being reset which caused the local time to be lost. A common problem with the 310. I received a refurbished unit as a warranty replacement this also had the same bug. The third replacement was ok which is the one I am currently using. Below is a link to the time issue.
https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?27306-310XT-loses-date-time-when-turned-off
Edit: losing time may not seem a big issue, but it caused the TCX files to become corrupt. So I had to “fix” the file using a text editor and set the header time to be same as the trackpoints. Otherwise sites such as Garmin Connect and Strava would not accept the TCX file.
jimmersFree Memberyou can singlespeed it without the need for tensioner
I needed to use a tensioner, how did you manage to get this to work?
jimmersFree MemberNever mind about grown men. Imagine the scene, at Xmas and my mother (recently 60) asks for tips for missions related to the Dark Brotherhood (assassins) on Skyrim. Couldn’t really offer any advice as thats a bit dark for me.
Which basically means my mother gets enjoyment creeping around stabbing virtual creatures in the back. And my missue wonders where I get it from…
jimmersFree Memberwhat ratio are you running?
Probably a 32:16 which is on there at the moment.
Are elbow pads worth a consideration?
jimmersFree MemberYep looking to have fun.
40mpg: Sounds good.
From what I can figure out you basically chat and pootle between fun runs, then repeat.
When it’s all over someone tells you how much faster everyone is then go home and crack open a beer (or the nearest pub).
Might get some flexy knee pads just in case. I’ve got some old hard shin and knee pads but for all day riding they will probably be overkill I imagine.
jimmersFree MemberSad news, I personally didn’t mind paying £50 for the event as the organisation and support was fantastic.
I guess this mirrors the reduction in numbers for 24h events such as the Worlds 24 hour championship being cancelled a couple years ago.
jimmersFree MemberWhich school?
Bramcote Hills Comp and Park View Sixthform.
Started MTBing up Hemlock Stone when Rockshox RS1 forks were cutting edge stuff.
jimmersFree MemberMust admit when I go back I am still probably wearing rose tinted specs.
Bit too old to know about “drunken slappers” but that sounds no different to when I was a nipper
jimmersFree MemberI’ve got an iPad, though any tablet will do. Tablets are great for “I will just have a quick on the Internet for xyz”. With a laptop it’s more like; I will have a look on the Internet but can’t be bothered to wait for the laptop to boot up so I won’t bother…
jimmersFree MemberMy first sportive and I was mightly impressed with the organisation. All the locals and drivers (mostly) were cheering and courteous especially when the marshals stopped traffic to let riders through.
Support from random strangers also evident. Example being a chap handing out oranges and bananas on Cold Fell by a camper van in driving rain.
If only the locals were as understanding in my local area (see thread about the New Forest sportive).
jimmersFree MemberI’ve got Windows 8 on my works laptop. It’s ok but can be frustrating at times.
The Mrs needed a new laptop to as old one is a bit slow (10years old) considered getting a cheap Win 8 laptop but thought better of it. In the end I bought a second hand MacBook Pro as that is more straight forward to use.
For the IT bods try using Windows Server 2012 via remote desktop. It has the same UI layout as Win 8. I had to Google how to find out where Internet Explorer is and how to log out. Using the charm action is difficult in a VM window and you can’t use the Windows Start key. Downgraded the server to Windows Sever 2008.
jimmersFree MemberAm I the only one who keeps getting sucked into reading these 26er-v-29er threads?
Note to self: ignore any threads with the 26er or 29er included into the thread title…
jimmersFree MemberI don’t get the ‘suffer score’ thing? Is it just worked out based on %max HR versus time?
There are two method for calculating Trimp / Suffer score / etc. One based on zones and a coefficient assigned to each zone. Or another which is more complicated based on exponential calculation.
Strava use the simpler one whilst I believe SportTracks uses exponential calculation.
