Yes, it’s nonsense of course. To reiterate, TJ’s stance here is that if you walk your dog, under control, calmly past someone, and that person happens to be scared of your dog, that is illegal, and that person is within their rights to defend themselves by attacking your dog.

To be fair to TJ though, all the dog would have to do would be “look mean” (subjective) snarl, or growl at the “victim and you have a case.

Assult is a simple thing with no classifications. Its as defined above. Its often combined with other ofenses

IIRC in order of seriousness:

assault ( no physical contact required)

Could you give examples of assault convictions with no physical contact for context please?

TJAGAIN

NOpe – does not have to be deliberate IIRC. Seriously dude – go read the law and guidance. NO contact is needed for it to be an assault. If you feel threatened by somone even if the do not intend to be threatening it can be an assult.

I am no lawyer but I have done a fair amount of learning on legal stuff especially around assault and so on as its relevant to my job.

Yes but there are varying degrees of / severity / classification of assault so assault as an umbrella term is something of a misnomer. It probably needs to be broken down into assault, common asault, battery, abh, gbh, aggravated etc

Not a human female. Probably can’t refer to them as “birds” anymore without being a misogynist. Not that I ever would, that’s an English thing.

I would be very tempted by the Fuji system too if I were buying at the moment.

The Fuji XT-2 is a thing of beauty and handles incredibly well. Bit big iirc, almost getting back up to dslr dimensions but it’s a fine piece of kit. Would be tempted by a used one if I could justify it.

If the money is spent on the lenses can they be swapped between brands? If I buy and old Nikon now and then decide to buy a better Cannon will the kit still fit?

No each brand has their own mounting system

Unless you go mirrorless in which case you can delve into the endless world of old manual lenses. As the OP is just starting out it’ll make little or no difference in practical terms whether he goes used DSLR or used mirrorless. Ditching my DSLR in favour of my Sony A6000 was the best move I made in terms of taking more photographs / having my camera on me more of the time and the quality is indistinguishable from a dslr.

Trying to cut carbs for a few months but really cant cut out white rice. Whats the thoughs on decent alternatives ?

Ideally you would want to have most or all of your carbs coming from green vegetables, that way you can pretty much eat as many “carbs” as you want and you’ll still be “low carb”.

I would urge everyone to do some reading/research call it what you want on your hormones and the relationship they play in fat burning / muscle building (and also to your general health / menatl health). Testosterone is obviously important when it comes to building muscle but it’s also essential in burning fat. Cortisol is the opposite – it helps your body store fat and it depletes muscle. As we get older our testosterone gradually declines and our cortisol levels increase due to stress, lack of sleep, bad diet, booze etc. Our diet and exercise regimes should be optimised to increase testosterone and decrease cortisol and as it happens that’s pretty much what you get with a low carb diet. Easier said than done though.

I mentioned on the creatine thread that there’s a potential relationship between endurance sports and decreased testosterone, I can’t cite that as a fact but consider some weight/resistance training, some kind of anaerobic or semi anaerobic competition as part of your routine guys.

Border collies are a nightmare, seems to be in their DNA to nip ankles as they do with the sheep? one local to me has had the SPD to the napper a few times, doesn’t seem to learn.

I’d report to the police due to the passing out etc…

I had two dogs like this on my favourite loop. One nearly wiped me out by attacking me as the evening was getting dark, anyway I lost the rag and decided to do something about it – dismounted, grabbed my trusty pump and went after the collie with every intention of braining it. The dog fled. About two miles up the road I came to the other problem dog and since I was still seething (at the owners more than the dog) I dismounted when the dog came barking. The owner was actually standing at his door watching as the dog chased me down, still standing there as I marched up their driveway calling the dog all the ****ers of the day.

A week or so later I was on the same loop and expecting a replay of the usual bark/chase/ankle nip/sweary bullshit but the dog just sat quietly and watched me. Further up the road dog two, same result and every time since. I don’t know if they recognise my scent or how I look or whatever but I get no trouble from them. Probably not advisable with a large rottweiler or similar but it definitely worked for me. People who can’t control their dogs should be put down.

If I was to think about moving the family to Canada, where would we want to go? Only a pipe dream really but always nice to think about it.

Requirements would be

• Rural but not remote friendly small town
• Decent schools
• Good quality outdoor scene, not just big country adventuring but, more importantly, local accessible biking, hiking etc
• Sporty culture, lots of kids clubs and opportunities
• Within 1.5 hours of decent sized town / city with a bit of culture
• Continental type weather of decent summers and nice cold winters
• Able to fly back to UK relatively easily
• Area with nice housing, low crime, decent parks and community

I’m not going to recommend anywhere specifically but I’d just point out to the OP that while I’m sure your requirements are not impossible they are pretty subjective. When I was there the vast majority of people I met were “sporty”, as in they self identified as a snowboarder/mountain biker/climber / hunter etc without any real prompting and this even applied to the city folk.

A lot of the towns mentioned above seemed to be pretty unpopular with Canadians themselves – “tourist trap” “drug den” “party town” etc were the usual replies when most of the “mtb scene” towns you often hear romanticised in mtb films and magazines were brought up.

Culture is extremely subjective – I would never have considered Edmonton to be a hive of culture (it’s an industrial sprawl) but it has as many plays and shows and entertainment as you’ll find in most UK or European cities and when I was there Motley Crue and Iron Maiden were playing in the shopping mall, and I’m not making that up. Calgary seemed fine to me but is often criticised for being a redneck cattle town full of yokels and hicks. Go figure.

My advice would be to take a long holiday there. Western Alberta and BC are unbelievable. I would go back in a heart beat and could easily have moved there.

The use of terms to identify the people and their actions is, I’m sure, counterproductive, if not evidently harmful. ‘The driver’ did this; ‘the cyclist’ did that. If the focus would be left of what one individual’s actions were, and the mode of transport incidental, it creates much less opportunity toy for assumption and side-taking, and more potential for more people to see the incident from the victim’s perspective. It’s very irresponsible reporting, and sadly largely typical.

I agree with the sentiment you’re trying to express but to be honest in this instance it’s kind of necessary just to convey the story in clear, easy to understand terms. Also in this instance Driver/Pedestrian doesn’t imply (to me at least) the kind of side taking you’re alluding to which might be present in a Driver/Cyclist altercation.

Cheers all, loads to be getting on with. Kids will be 10, 7 and 5, not looking for anything too adventurous, no sea kayaking or owt. Walks in the hills and good beaches are preferred, good food for lunch stops. We’ve found a place on Inch Island to stay so anywhere local would be good but we’ll have the car and travelling further afield is not a problem. I wouldn’t mind a good hill walk when I was there too.

Okay on Inch Island there are a few little beaches, they can get packed in good weather though. Also be sure to check out Inch Castle / Doherty castle, it’s a ruin with no health barriers or signage but along with Burt Castle, Elagh castle and the walls of Derry they really tell the story of the whole area. Grianan Aliagh is just over the road from you and there’s a nice Aussie chap up there who does nice coffee. Grianan hotel has decent pub grub but can be very busy if there’s a wedding on so maybe phone ahead.

Local to you on the Innishowed penisula my favourite beaches would be Kinnagoe bay and Tremone. Check out Malin Head too. There’s a lidl, and Aldi and a Supervalue in Buncrana but apart from that it’s a tourist trap town. If you do go there for a day avoid the main beach (it’s busy and has a dangerous current), go for the coastal walk instead.

Beaches worth a look on the Fanad Pennisula – Portsalon/Ballymacstoker, Tra na Rossan . Mulroy, Isle of Doagh, and Fanad head. See if you can find the murder hole.

Do check out Glenveagh and the surrounding area for hiking. I wouldn’t take young kids up Errigal, try Muckish instead or The Poisoned Glen which is stunning, but boggy. Alternatively there’s a lovely walk near Errigal to Lough Altan, which is breathtaking with a completely deserted beach. If you’re feeling advernturous come at it from the Muckish side over Alagh Mor.

If you can hike over the Poisoned Glen the views are amazing. You can cycle around Glenveagh National park but it’s gravel tracks and old roads as opposed to MTB. You can get a bus from the visitors centre over to St. Columbas birthplace and cycle back to Glenveagh castle, phone ahead for times and bike space though. Gartan forest has some little trails and nice walks, check out Callaghans bar in Church Hill if you’re there.

As above the Bluestacks are lovely and the Bluestack drive is a nice loop to cycle for adults. Check out Ard na Mona woods and Lough Eske walk. Check out Disert, the mass altar and the paupers graveyard and Biddy o Barnes for a pint of Guinness. There’s a lovely hike from Croventa over Croaghgorm and down to Lough Eske. Not really suitable for the kids though.

On the west side of the county Slieve League is absolutely amazing, worth the trip. if I think of anything else I’ll make another post. Any other questions ask away.

Maybe the death of social media as we know it will come sooner than expected if other companies start to withdraw from it

It certainly won’t be the death of social media. In fact, social media will never die as long as we continue to live more technologically connected, plugged in lives. It’ll probably morph and change in ways we can’t foresee but it won’t go away, it’ll just grow.

There may be some shift or segregation between personal and corporate social media, but the access to specific demographics social media provides to businesses will probably mean the smart companies stay as close to their customers as possible.

Uber Atonomous Volvo XC90 kills pedestrian.

Bit cheeky jimjam, didn’t that car have Volvo’s safety systems turned off in favour of Uber’s?

It’s as clear as mud what systems were or were not running on that car. Uber don’t have their own hardware. It may well have still had Volvo safety systems in place and simply been mapping / data gathering for uber. I haven’t read anything conclusive about it – investigations are still on going.

Got a citation for that jimjam?

I presume you mean creatine and test? It’s something I’ve heard over and over but I googled it before posting and there are certainly a load of sites (hundreds) echoing it. I’m not stating that as fact – I have no expertise in the area but I think it’s safe to say the negative symptoms of low testosterone are well documented, the fact that testosterone decreases with age, also well documented as are the benefits of trt. I think it would be worth your (or any aging male’s) time to at least look into it.

What sort of dose cycle are you talking about?

I guess it would depend on your activity levels and tolerance to creatine.

Despite being a long term sceptic of the benefits of creatine for cycling I’ve decided to give it a go and see if it will help improve sprint power. I read a little article on another cycling website where it was claimed to have proved beneficial for an extensive sample of one…

Anyone else tried it, or know of other cyclists experiences from using it?

Bit of a mild tangent here but creatine has been shown to increase testosterone and increase conversion to Dihydrotestosterone, and there appears to be some evidence that endurance sports such as cycling or jogging decrease testosterone. Low testosterone has many of the same symptoms as depression in men so as we get older it’s probably a good idea to be mindful of this.

Even if you’re just beaten down from long hours on the bike it seems like crreatine would be good to supplement with as it’s been shown to help with complex tasks when fatigued. No doubt there’ll be conflicting evidence on all those points but its worth considering.

The last pickup truck I was in and drove was a Ford F150 4×4 out in in Canada. It looked and felt very roomy, in the front and seat and in the back row. Although I imagine the Ranger is about half the size of the F150… two thirds of the size at best.

mikewsmith

Well after exercise being able to have my knees somewhere sensible, not squashed etc. is what I prefer. In van it’s an actual real seat where you can have your feet on the floor and your knees bent. In a pickup in the front you shove your feet forward, in the back you can’t.

This van of which you speak, with the actual seats, I presume it’s a universal standard right? I mean there couldn’t be a crew cab van with awful seats, or a van derived mini bus or converted van with horrible, uncomfortable or unsupported seats? All van seats are equal and great I assume.

Personal real experience here,

Do you think other people won’t have been able to have personal real experiences in the realm of sitting on their arses in commercial vehicles. Honestly there aren’t enough hours in the day to argue with you that something which isn’t uncomfortable is uncomfortable so I’ll stop trying.

For £20 the back of a Landcruiser Troopie is OK for a short trip. I’ve been in the back of the most recent HiLux, Navara, Ranger and Amarok, none are that comfortable for anyone over a midget, I certainly wouldn’t pay an extended amount of time in one. And yes a combination of seats and the utter shit fold down things.

Comfort/Discomfort are relative of course but severe physical impairment aside, I would have to question the honesty or objectivity of a healthy adult saying they feel genuine pain or discomfort sitting on a padded foam seat in a modern pickup, especially when vans are touted as the benchmark of comfort.

The thread on pick ups was asking how to secure the bikes, you can’t unless you get them inside.

Most pickup beds have multiple steel tie down points. A steel security cable, a lock and 30 secs will secure the bikes pretty well if needs be. Even if the bed doesn’t have mounting points they can be screwed in or welded in easily.

TheBrick

I think most UK pick ups thatncan take 4 – 5 people will struggle to carry the 4-5 bikes even when using the ooh so cool bikes over tailngat.

Most bikes I had in the back of my old Hilux (much smaller than current trucks) was 7. Even a small double cab will take 4 bikes over the tailgate easily.

mikewsmith

Then something comfortably for the passengers would be a priority,

Aye, I forgot that travelling in a pickup truck was akin to having barbed wire forced up your anus or similar right? 😂😂 Seriously, the level of snobbery on this forum towards pickups is hilarious. Oh but vans are just incredible!!! gtfo. The customers will probably feel more special and enjoy the experience of touring about in a truck with their bikes over the tailgate than sat in a mini bus.

Are you referring to Zabit Magomedsharipov vs Kyle Bochniak? That was a hell of a fight. Zabit broke his hand apparently. Someone get that guy some english lessons.

Bad day in the office for Khabib but still came out champ. Don’t think Conor would have got up as easily as Al did and Khabib would deffo go to the ground more against McSlabber

Hmmmm. Really not so sure about that. McGregor is at least a brown belt in jiujitsu as of a year ago and has been training extensively with Dillon Danis since then. The knock on him is always that he’s no good on the ground and yet whenever he hit’s the ground he’s shown to be more than capable (when not half knocked out already). The idea that a UFC champ and blackbelt level BJJ player is crap on the ground is just nonsense. McGregor also measures distance brilliantly making him incredibly difficult to shoot on. He would handle Khabib’s low singles easily. A blast double leg from someone like GSP, Woodley or similar might be a different question though.

Just drive them back to back. The diesel will feel horrible compared to new turbo petrol (which I presume is what you’re looking at). Unless I was doing spaceship mileage or couldn’t get my car of choice in a petrol variant I’d be happy to pay a little extra for the nicer driving experience petrol offers.
