Is 26lbs really that heavy for doing long distance riding? over the last 2 year, I’ve been doing audax rides on 2 different bikes, a Planet X Ti Sportive unloaded 24lbs, and a Salsa Vaya unloaded 32lbs, unless Im looking at doing a really hilly ride, there isn’t much between them, the Vaya is heavier, but is just as comfortable.

There is a thread about bike weights on YACFat the moment, which could be worth a read.

What tires do you currently have, as this can make a huge difference to the ride / speed of a bike, also getting 46cm handlebars may be an issue, as not many make them over 44mm, one brand who does is Deda

Would stick with Shimano/SRAM (What ever your RD’s currently are), unless going for Hope or MtZoom, not used Tacx, but had a pair of BBB’s lasted about 3 rides before they were scrap.

What about a pair of Time All Road / All Road Gripper, flat on one side, clips on the other, and very cheap at CRC, seem to do what you are asking for.

The William Clio was earlier, don’t remember the V6 bein mentioned, the biggest problem with any future classic is numbers left, in 2012 there were 417 V6 Clio’s left, not many to last to become a future classic

For the Mk 1 Ka, there are 150K left, but this is fast going down, and all of them seem to have major corrosion issues, around the fuel filler cap is the obvious one, they are like the 00’s version of the Nova, which had huge numbers in the 90’s, now just over 3K left and the numbers are falling fast.

Like the 205 GTI, and numbers are steady for this for some to survive.

    Not worth the risk

Can you expand on that, not had a lot of Pro-Lite stuff, but it’s all been OK so far, and was looking at a TT frame they do.

2013 has been here for months in the bike world, so availbility shouldnt be an issue, although the Cannondale looks to have a bit of a lead time depending on size.

For spec, all look similar, 2013 9 speed Sora is a massive upgrade over 2012 8 speed, and worth paying a premium for.

For commuting, hard to tell from the pictures, but none of them have seem to have mudguard or rack mounts, mudguards are very useful if commuting (or just winter riding in general), and a rack could be, depending on what you need to carry. would be worth checking the max tire size for the bikes, as all are probably limited to 25mm.

Have you budgeted for a decent lock, lights etc? If you are going to be commuting in the evening / dark, a dynamo front wheel could be an option.

Can’t see what the point of them would be, people will still slow down to look at the screens, and to catch a glimpse of what’s happening, they don’t look to be that high, you will still be able to see the top of any large vehicle involved.

Also a lot of major incidents now seem to have both lanes closed, with little need for them, add to that, if the incident is near a bridge, you still have a good viewing platform from there.

Make sure you get the correct adaptor, post to post or IS to post, if you are getting M785’s you will want Ice-Tech rotors to match the pads, you will need to order these in Centerlock or 6 bolt, depending on what spec your hubs are.

Not a fan of PX wheels and I have a lot of PX stuff I really like; have had a few sets which came with bikes, the the freehubs all seem to be made of a very soft alu, so the cassettes gouge them deeply, had a rim bend on a 2cm curb which I have ridden many times with other wheels. Sold the last set I got on a bike before even using them.

Have ridden thousand of km’s on Fulcrums, with no issues, same for Mavics, both better choices for very similar money.

Have found there is a difference between the 5700 and 6700, the 6700 feels better on the hoods (although that’s always personal preference), and the Carbon levers have a nicer feel. As to functionality, not a lot between them.

One thing I have noticed with both 5700 & 6700 is the cable routing can be tight enough so the gear cables can fray at the entrance to the hoods which it can’t on the olcer models due to the design.

It did when the OP first posted it, but the auctions have now finished. They were for bulk lots of parts, far to high a start price, and wrong finish time for a auction, here are the ended items.

    ended 1
    ended 2
    ended 3

There £22.20 from Ribble (when you’ve spent £35) On road, off road, they only make one chain for it.

There is a difference for Shimano road chains being symetrical, although this is for 10 speed only, 11 speed has gone back to fitting either way round

Why not just take it into you room, never had any complaints at Holiday Inns, Travel Lodges etc,

Theoretical possible, but not physically, 3-4 meters is the max physically given in the article, using only 2×2 bricks going straight up.

Had a pair, they lasted a couple of rides before the were rough, would get OEM Shimano as cost was is a factor (CRC has RD5700’s for £7.99 which will work) , Hope ones are really nice, but pricey, and out of the price range you have listed.

Tech Docs here You need part #1, Shimano code Y1F811100

You should be able to get it from any good LBS as they all should have a Madison account madison link, or if you want it on line, SJS have it instock here[/url]

What about being current with 11 speed Dura Ace, unless looking at Di2, Shimano 10 speed is obsolete at the high end you are looking at.

Which 105’s? if the newer 5700’s check the condition of the cable, I had the same issue with a 6700, and it turned out that the cable was fraying at the exit of the shifter, replaced the cable, and shifting was back to normal.

If you have a Chas Ohlson store near you, they do a version of the Mobi V17, their version having used both this, and the Mobi version, I prefer the Chas Ohlson spray gun attachment, + it has a 2 year guarantee, which is a year more than Mobi give.

Nice visually, but did feel very dumbed down, definitely felt more suited to the CBBC audience than anything approaching an adult audience.

Been using 25mm Durano Plus (older version, badged as Stelvio Plus) for a 8 months now for Audax use, only used them on the rear, got about 3500km out the first before it was down to the blue liner, replaced with another, done aout 1500km on that so far, looks almost new still.

Very fast and light weight considering the puncture protection layer it has in it, weighs alot less than a Marathon.

The first Stelvio Plus I had was covered by cuts in the end, but it never punctured, have used Marathons as well before, and can’t remember any punctures with them either

That’s a long commute (is the 17 miles total or each way?) , and you won’t get much for £500.

If your lucky you may find somthing ok on ebay / 2nd hand.

Do you need to carry anything – a rack?, mudguards? hard to find mounts for these on a lot of road bikes

Have you looked at hybrids? if there is a high chance of theft, you don’t want to spend too much, Carrera Subways look OK, + a good lock whatever you get.

That Btwin above looks very good for the money as well.

Wiler, the Bianchi has the seatpost far to far out of the bike for a road bike + it’s been crashed.

Carrera, this has some bad setup, this could indicate no care or maintenance.

Both have Sora shifters, which are pretty universally regarded as bad, no warranty on either, FSA cranks, which have poor chainring life

Wiler has warranty, and Campagnolo Xenon is’t the greatest, but would rather have this than pre 2013 Sora

Calender isn’t broadcast in HD, therefore in West Yorks, you don’t get it, same as a lot of other regions.

Look at BBC1 HD when the local news programming is on. They just have an info card up.

For what crank? Ones for 6650, Rose has them for £55 ish, for 6750 Rose has black in stock @ £58 ish, one week lead for grey @ £55

SKS are great, but Merak’s right with the fitting time, once you’ve done it once, it’s easy.

Threat of being exposed for what he was to family & public seemed to do it. Does seem to be moving along now with the tailor and Walker story lines.

As Brodys been turned as a double agent, not sure how the writers will take this further than the end of this season, let alone 3 or 4, will be interesting to see what happens next.

    Higher the number, newer the groupset, i.e. M751 = 1998, M785 = 2012

4 digit number are for road groupsets, M=3 digit = MTB, MX+2 digit = BMX, T+3 digit = Trekking; also expect some crossover with parts

For MTB, within that, first number indicates level, M6** = SLX/Zee M7** = XT, M9** = XTR etc

That’s it in really simple terms, google Shimano date codes, and there is plenty of info out there, especially for the older parts; just because a part is listed as a model year, it will probably have been available earlier than that, 2013 parts are in the shops now for some groupsets.

Why not just get it serviced, should be a lot cheaper than a new one.

From experience, they all wear a lot in wet weather, some more than others. Fibrax were really bad for heavy wear, but they were very cheap, Swissstop were a lot better but not enough for the cost.

Currently using stock Shimano pads (R55C3), get them from Germany, and there are a third the price of Swissstop, and just as good performance.

Koolstop Salmon are often recommended, yet to try them myself.

They mentioned 3 UK bike manufactures left in the show, who are these?

Thinking Orange and Pashley, Moulton and Brompton still make full bikes in the UK, anyone else?

Very quick, puts some UK retailers to shame.
