what about a whyte 19 steel? coming in at 1600 notes, nice group, bit shorter travel than a p7, and prettier.

    http://www.whytebikes.com/2010/19steel.html

We're getting them in at cyclesurgery very shortly.

    hmmm.

I don't think there needs to be a test extension – I think if you had to try to pass a test today you'd see how hard/expensive for people to get a license these days. France/Germany don't have special snow tests for drivers, and they get a lots worse weather than us! (though they do employ the common sense gland a little quicker it seems!)

I think with the current weather, half the country don't know whats wrong with the other ohalf purely because everyone is experiencing massively different conditions. Yesterday, on the usual drive to guildford, it took me an hour to go the two miles up Dyke Road due to ice/snow/traffic. 10 miles away, the sun was out and the roads were fast and dry.
It probably WAS pretty bad, and the fact is that we live in a mild country where this really doesn't happen that often.

As for the news, well, it's news. As someone said before, the snow and ice had a far greater affect on my life than the impending strikes, but I got that fairly relentlessly for a week.

Of course Martinxyz, maybe no-one in the south of the country is as good a driver as you. but it's unlikely.

aahh. just go for a ride.*

if you're being dead anal about it, the theory is you need to get them hot, and under pressure – best way? top of a long tarmac descent, rollo down it while braking gently to get them hot, and then brake hard a few times on the way down.

That said I've never done this, and have had brake pads last ages – even, shock horror SS ones! (apart from an afan trip)

*please don't hold me responsible for complete brake failure. I have absolutely no qualifications in this area and could be talking sh!te.

    good lads.

I can imagine the production meeting for 5 live…

"lets get a band on called rage against the machine, who's most famous song centres around a lyric – **** you I won't do what you tell me – and then we'll tell them not to sing that bit. No, I'm sure they'll do exactly what they're told"

actually, that has inspired me to buy the record now…

jimbobrighton – A lot of people i talk to on flights say the attutude of cabin staff is down to bad management so yes the cabin staff have some blame but some must fall on others to put them in a foul mood.

Just an excuse – you can't go on about how highly trained and professional you are while at the same time moan about your management/employer to your customers.

    It's inappropriate. It's unprofessional.

At the end of the day it's not the customers fault, but guess what? they are the ones, once again that are being made to pay for the poor relationship between the company and the union.

BAs disintigrating standards of service in the air he will soon take them there.

To be fair, isn't this largely down to the crew who are striking?

Or its sad to see a faithful and hard-working workforce being fecked over by the bosses who wont take any share of the pain themselves?

a third of managers accepting redundancy

    7000 employees accepting pay cuts

    pilots agree to pay cut

engineers willing to accept some change

I just don't see why crew should watch everyone else suffer.

cabin crew have absolutely no idea how good they have it. In a country where virtually every sector is having at least a pay freeze, most cabin crew are being offered pay increases of between 5-7% for both this year and next.
Junior cabin crew earn 25-35k depending on the routes they travel. CSDs get upwards of 50k. It's not just industry leading, it's bonkers. Have you ever wondered why BA crew tend to be a bit older? because THEY KNOW THEY ARE ON A BLOODY GOOD DEAL, not just a good deal, a great one. I worked for BA for a while, and it was by far the best company I have worked for in terms of conditions, pay, perks etc.

It's sad to see a company being destroyed by the staff who it has looked after for decades.

    idiots.

I could spout lots of guff about keeping it real, pure connections with the trail etc.

Or I could just fess up and say I can't afford a decent FS, but would love one.

Probably not to everyones taste but at least you won't get your head kicked in.

still plenty of opportunity for that I'm afraid

    but a great place nonetheless

Yes sadly true, but happily, it's easier to avoid in brighton than most town centres I've been to (don't go down west street shitty street frequented by chavs/stag/hen doos with shit bars and shit clubs – simples), apart from this area, pretty much everywhere else I can think of is ace 🙂

I've already been. Maybe (almost certainly actually), I'm missing some society gene, but it was just another seaside town to me, perhaps with slightly more men in leather chaps than could be considered normal.

Actually it's a local bye-law down here – all gays have to wear leather chaps, so you know what they are.

Good to see prejudice and stereotyping is alive and well on STW!

Thanks chaps – am now on the list for further information next time LAS do a recruitment round in early 2010.

It's always appealed, but it's getting to that point now where I've got to make a decision career wise, so best get on with it!

    Thanks for the replies –

I've got technines and they are pretty good.

I personally woudln't go for any gimmicky designs i.e. the ride flip flop design, or the k2 autos/cinch.

I've always liked burton, and havn't seen any go pop personally.

    don't need to spend tons.
not going snowboarding this year. 🙁

    hmmm.

the question lies between the councils duty to keep the roads as safe as possible vs your responsibility as a driver to read the conditions and alter your speed accordingly.

I nearly had the same issue as you this week going to work, and ended up with a bit of sideways action that if I was going faster, I'd have ended up in a ditch. I remember being annoyed there was no grit on my entire journey, and didn't see a gritter out the whole of my commute (90minutes)

I suppose the other thing to ascertain is what ius a reasonable time to have the roads gritted by? if you were going to work at 0530, or 0830 might make the difference as to what sort of case you have.

Annoying they are claiming on your insurance to fix the wall though.

If it was me, I'd come onto STW, grumble about it, and then prob do nothing about it. 😆

At the end of the day, you're out of pocket, and you've got some bruising – prob best be thankful you walked away.

I don't understand how it can happen so quickly. I only just changed some pads that I used for the Mega in July.

    AND they were superstar ones.

it's got to be how you ride.

couple of weeks ago at afan, mate riding an enduro got through a brand new set of pads (and half the backing plate!) in a day and a half. Me, riding an inbred showed no noticeable wear.

I must have not been going fast enough to need brakes!

I ride leith/holmbury/pitch hill right through the winter and my pads (SSC sintered) have lasted about 6 months so far (with lots still left on them)

I just don't seem to go through brake pads that quick (wish I could say the same for chains/cassettes/chainrings!)

    yawn.

last time I checked no one held a gun to someones head making them buy overpriced stuff on an internet forum. you don't buy it. they don't sell it. they decide whether to keep hold of it, or reduce price.

I've had some bargains on STW, and have used it to get rid of stuff I don't need.

and old git, 2nd hand means second hand, not half price.. it's worth what someones willing to pay for it.

I don't think anyone on here posts on classified for altruistic purposes.
