just caught up with this thread after a fair while away from it.

I don't think there would be a person in the world that wouldn't be sh!tting themselves faced with what you are. It's how you deal with that fear that determines whether you get through it. I'd echo everyones sentiments here, I'd like to think I could get through that diesease with the same bravery, humour and general aplomb that you are, but I know myself and I honestly don't think I could.

When this is all over, I'm going to copy this thread and keep it somewhere safe to show my kids (if I have any) one day as a way to show them that THIS is the way to deal with things when life gets sh!tty.

    keep it up mate.

    tap it with a hammer

make that a rubber mallet – maybe a few gentle taps to get it seated and def one at a time as said
hijack alert! put a few headsets in frames i've bought and hammered out knackered ones but never taken one out so can get frame powder coated and reuse – suggestions? all i can think of is a wooden dowel

Make a cup remover. get a section of copper pipe, cut down the length, and then slightly splay out the ends so they sit on the inside of the cup, hammer. cup falls out*

*I've done this and it worked for me. but that could have been blind luck 😯

£30 to press in a headset is hilarious. my LBS charged £10, which I would feel is as much as I'd ever pay, given it's a 2 minute job.

That said, last time I pressed in a headset I used an old crank and a chopping board. Went in perfect, though I was a bit relieved!

Top tip – Turn up smartly dressed, with smart luggage and ask (very politely) for an upgrade. More likely to be upgraded if well dressed!

Just doesn't happen like that anymore I'm afraid 🙁

Be very, very nice to whoever checks you in, dress smart but comfy, and you might (might, if there is space in business AND economy has been overbooked) get an upgrade. my colleagues who worked at check in always had the attitude that if people asked for an upgrade they would go to the bottom of the pile, after they offered them the opportunity to buy an upgrade. you don't buy a fiesta and ask if you can have a ferrari instead (fairly apt comparison in terms of price difference).

The other thing is that full fare paying passengers hate it. you would too if you'd dropped 4k on the same seat that someone got for 10% of that.

I think that the geometry of the bike is more important than whether it has 120mm or 140mm of travel.

flown both. BA club and cattle. VA cattle.

I'll be honest, BA was the more pleasant experience (when comparing economy). just all seemed a bit more relaxed and at ease. the interiors are (iME better). VA, on the route I flew was a bit more 'package holiday' than premium airline "ladies and gentleman, boys and girls" etc.

TBH though, I'd always go for the cheapest. neither are exactly unpleasant, and both give free booze out, which, sadly for me is high on my list of priorities on a long flight!

whytes is the staple, with a black loop, boardwalk stuff etc. it's all about how fast you go down it to be honest. almost anyone could ride most of the trails there, but it does get more fun the faster you ride….until you come flying off and hurting yourself. 🙁

    errr.

vote with your wallet then? it's pretty simple innit? it shows that price fixing ain't happening in this industry, (at least in this instance) which is great news for the consumer. I would be seriously worried if everything was exactly the same price everywhere you look.

50 miles each way, though I do spend a fair bit of time not in the office.

wouldn't go any further. works out about 1h10m though has taken 3 hours.

I miss my commute by bike 🙁

I used to look after Bulgaria product for Neilson holidays. Been to all the Bulgarian resorts.

depends what you want really. Bansko is definately the pick of the bunch. as the resort is only 7 or 8 years old, all the lifts are modern and fast. ski area not huge but enough to keep you interested for a week as long as you're not some sort of mile muncher.
PLace is still a building site and will be for a while yet.
accom is pretty good, though the service levels in Bulgaria are generally lower than elsewhere (they are not intentionally surly or rude, but they don't really do smiling!)

Borovets is on the whole a bit older, massive hotels (1000+ rooms!). used to be a problem with hookers in the lobbys but not now. Ski area a bit more technical. and snow not as good as Bansko.

    I woulndn't bother with pamporovo.

p.s. the snow can be excellent in Bulgaria, but it's a bit more of a gamble. I'd wait for a late deal and see what comesup.

pps – pre buy all your lift tickets/kit/lessons before you go. they will be at least double the price in resort. Despite repeated advice, customers turned up every week and got shafted, and there was nothing we could do to help.

    enjoy!

listening to my folks about the likelihood of my career aspirations.

Still, that's on the mend now, and as a result I have had a cracking past 20 years, just a bit behind on the career thing now (not that I'm bothered actually)

otherwise, few ladies, few opportunities, but I would only have taken them in hindsight if they led to where I am now. which is unlikely.

    oh, and the twins.

er. plenty of people work in london for <20k.

I think CFH is right, graduates nearly always expect a well paid job from day one (it took me a while to realise that it just doesn't happen – even 10 years ago).

My first proper job paid 16k. 3 years later it was 30k. (gone back down significantly since then, but that was a decision I took freely).

Fact is that kids are told all the way through their education that a degree will ensure they will earn higher wages. so they go to uni, spend £20k on fees and loans, and come out to discover that the lad they went to school with is getting paid more working as a carpenter/sparky/plumber. (nothing wrong with these professions BTW, it's just that the reason people go to uni, usually is to ensure a well paid career)

It's got to be a bitter pill to swallow. Fortunately most people realise that crap pay for graduates doesn't last forever as long as you're not a complete tool 🙂

anybody know what type of vehicle this is? converted army ambulance maybe?

Instead of pretending to be an Expedition hardman camping out in deepest Surrey. Surely the owner of the said tired-wornout looking vehicle could just spend the 6mpg on a really fancy hotel to stay in each night?
Is he camping ontop to avoid being attacked by the wild Tabby cats of Surbiton or bitten by the wild killer earth worms?

I like it. sod it, we do a stupid sport. why not own a stupid vehicle. I have some mates who are looking at a 101 for a team van. it's a laugh, innit?

    phew. hard reading.

it's hard to figure out, as someone for which that stuff just doesn't compute. to do that kind of stuff those kids must have come from a very bad place.

I can only imagine how I'd feel/what i'd do if that happened to my kids (if I had any)

the thing to do is waltz into bike shop waft the letter under thier noses and ask them to make your day! if they dont start licking your shoes, just walk away, its thier loss!
Yeah – good luck with that. Given that Cyclescheme take a big cut of the dealer margin, there's little incentive to cut any sort of a deal.

    don't ask you don't get.

ride down a hill dragging the brakes.

it does make a difference, both to pads lifespan, and to braking performance.

that said, my new bike (first ride today), I just dragged the brakes on the road down to my mates house. they only need to get hot, so should only take 30 seconds or so of light braking.

    simples.

my ex (still living in the same house) operates an "if it looks tidy, is tidy" policy

ie she will clear surfaces etc – but when you open the cupboard you get hit by falling hoovers/ saucepans / ironing boards etc as everything has just been thrown in.

Same here. When I helped move Mrs JB into my place, her (shared house) was spotless, just as long as you didn't look at anything over 5'5" high (mean height of girls in shared house).

Above the 5'5" threshold, the whole house was rancid.

we now live in a fairly perpetual level of untidy chaos, but at least there's no nasty surprises for tall people :-/
