wonderwall – had to be learnt in less than a week (from having never played before) as I cleverly told some bird at college I played guitar (when I didn't). She responded with "me too – you should come round and we can play some tunes…"

Emergency internet guitar lessons ensued and resulted in a, er, result 😀

making your own pasta is a waste of time. Pizzas on the other hand…

Now you're talking – I've got my Pizza dough making down to a tee.

less than an hour from starting to make dough to eating ace, ace pizzas, and therefore easier and less hassle than a delivery, and tastier.

that may have inspired me for tonight….

I do make sourdough from a starter that I keep in the fridge.

I've never had the patience to bother doing that, I bake my own bread from time to time, but sour dough recipes seem to take DAYS

    Don't miss your changeover.

Make sure you're all in it for the same reason (or at least happy to have a common team goal, be it drinking, finshing or winning)

Be honest with eachother from the outset.

I remember one year seeing a guy come off a lap at 3am having just turned hismelf inside out on his somme like nigth lap, carrying his bike (broken mech and hanger) only to find no one there waiting for him. "Dave? Dave? DAVE!? DAVE YOU MOOOOOTTHHHEERR F****CCKKKERR!"

I really can't wait for this years. Love it!

An italian colleague of mine told me once about the differences between dried and fresh pasta, but I can't for the life of me remember exactly what it was. Something along the lines of dried pasta being better for more robust sauces as it will absorb more of the robust juice whereas fresh pasta is better with light sauces where you just want it to gently coat the outside. But there are definitely some recipes that work better with one or the other.

Correct – dried better for spicy/oily sauces, fresh better for milder/creamier sauces.

Another vote for superstar sintered pads – much better than organic for longevity, can't notice the difference in stopping power.

cheap too, wouldn't bother with XTR to be honest.

hmm. I do 1-1.5 hours each way, which is mercifully split up by frequently not working in the office. I find it OK, but am aware I'm missing out on a lot of stuff at home. I would never, ever work any further from home than I do now. (working in the cycling industry too)

If it's in the cycling industry I doubt it would pay enough to warrant that amount of time commuting to be honest, regardless of whether they do/don't pick up the tab.

yesterday was dry as a bone on the surrey hills. well, a few small patchs of slight muddiness, but compared to the last few weeks, it was arid.

I got one a couple of months ago and even at full price it's got to be the best biking jacket I've ever owned. windproof, waterproof enough (thought the zips on the arms do let in some water). a little bit of insulation, excellent fit, useful pockets. The only thing I might say is that the front zip is a little fragile, but it's no great shakes.

    Seriously, get one.

try to ride a bike every day, but varys massively as to the amount of time – might be a 10 minute folding bike spin across london, or longer XC ride. either way, it's time on a bike, and it's all good

Drilling holes will fundamentally weaken the mast,

a couple of holes and pop rivets in the lower mast on a laser will have bugger all effect on the integrity of the mast.

    staying FLAT! Flat is fast

You're right there though, unless you're going downwind and running by the lea trying to reverse the flow over the sail. in which case you're, er, wrong.

bike bottle cage and some cable ties. Thats what I did in my laser racing days, admitedly 15 years ago now. not sure if things have moved on.

You are aware that autoglass don't have a monopoly on windscreen repair?

Yes aware of that – just that we have an account with them, and work are paying.

that flat section along the lake before kenda climb was a bugger last year – very uncomfortable, and I'd have loved a full sus at that point. Also the descent after the kenda climb would have been faster on a full sus.

That said, me being substantially fitter would have been faster overall. A hardtail is fine – this year I'll be on my whyte 901, and it'll be fine.

If I had the choice, I'd take a SS along if it got seriously muddy, but I don't, so I won't. 🙂

really like elixirs – one finger braking, lots of modulation, look quite good.

Shimano excellent too though. I wish Hope performed as good as they looked, but then I've not used em for a couple of years, maybe they're better now?

I seriously think it's road biking – 6 odd hours of pedalling at fairly close to threshold. tactics, downhilling @ 70mph, mental toughness.

That said, at my level of road biking it's none of these things 🙂

another 'tough' sport is solo yacht racing (vendee globe etc). you've got to be a tough, tough bastard to be able to cope, both physically (cold, infection, getting battered by various bits of the boat) and definately metally (isolation, knowing if anything goes wrong, there are some locations where you know you'll never be found, self belief, meteorology, tactics, sailing skill)

out of sports making my 'f*ck that' list Solo RTW yachting is my number 1.

sent mine off this morning. I like the entry day/week – always a bit of doubt as to whether you get in, and then the countdown begins…. target for this year – sub hour laps (conditions permitting!)

it would be a nightmare if entries went online. That said doing it by post means another tenner on guaranteed by 0900 delivery.

getting quite excited about it now, but not driving to derbyshire!

I must have been lucky up till now. Pads have always lasted a good few months for me in the past – I thought that the change of bike may have been the cause – more powerful brakes, riding faster?

    Prob just the grit fest

CFH – could be – is that the one at the end of winterwonderland where you turn left down the hill? It was actually a full on river today! Ace, gutted it ended too soon, wish I'd bitten the bullet and just bought some from pedal and spoke now…

We had one in the office the other day. I'd really, really like one. lots of nice features (like the helmet holder – so simple, works brill), the magnetic retainer on the hose, the bladder has a clip to stop it sliding down to the bottom of the pack (easier to use than the camebak hook/loop version.

Material it's made from feels quite light duty, reminded me of spinnaker cloth in places, but does have reinforcement in wear areas. Overall it looks extremely well made as good if not better than camelbak.

I'd get one if I could justify replacing my current pack, which I can't, at least not to Mrs JB. 🙁
