Isn’t the difference between dt5.1 rims and the flows only 10grams? Great if you intend tubeless but wasting your money if not. Crests are still strong and have a bigger weight saving. Both crest and 5.1 have same 21mm inner width.

Try the 29er in an 18″. The first thing you’ll notice is how much longer the bikes are over 26er versions. I know mine was about 20-30mm. You’ll soon know when on it if its right. 20″ is often to big for someone your height especially if short in the leg. It’ll feel even bigger with 29 wheels on. Bit like riding a gate!

Just throwing some ideas around about a meet up at dales centre for SS riders in spring or early summer time. Would there be any interest in this?

Thank god for that a bike that’s not all black! Nice build there, I really like it and that’s a bargin for the frame! Shame about the messy garden 😉

How taught is your chain? Chainline is very important if your running a 9spd chain so give it another check.

My second SS build but this time a 29er. Just need a few more bits to complete it. The frame, an On-One Scandal, would probably suit what you are looking for in a frame that is versatile enough. The drop outs can be changed so it can be run SS or with gears. Not stupid expensive either. 😀

Middle chainring and 5th gear will give you the straightest chainline. If the chains not sitting on that gear with the mech on, could be the hanger is bent/twisted. If you take it off you may find the chain too slack but you might strike lucky.

Personally I’d get a conversion kit. You never know it may come in useful again

Getting the yellow rim strip right is the most important part. Don’t wrap twice. Once will do with a two inch over lap. To ensure the tape is in right take stans advice and blow up tyres with an innertube and leave for an hour or more.

Then follow your normal steps as you’ve done. Some very good videos from stans on you tube shows it done right.

What’s the head tube on the niner? Is it tapered? On one do two mono forks. One is their short version and is 450mm and is standard fit their other is tapered and 470mm. The standard black is a very raw finish, it not laquered or anything. I painted mine and it looks great now but as yet I’ve not ridden them so I’ll have to comment later on performance.

I have the same arguments with my dad. For someone that reads so many times newspapers he’s very ignorant about the law regarding car tax *sigh*

That’ll be that really bright team kit he wears *shake of the head*

On one smoothie mixer here. Well machined bit of kit and not pricing. Shame if you have a tapered fork though as you’ll have to buy a different crown race.

Carbon rigid fork……go on you know you want too!

‘Knocks’ tend to be more bb based as the frame amplifies the sound more. A click or tick or anything gritty sounding would more likely be freewheel. Hard to tell with actually hearing it. I take there is no noise when free wheeling?

Khani, no I don’t bother with a bash ring. I like mine bare too but each to their own. Guess if you bashed rocks before might be worth it!

No clink sadly it didn’t but the drop outs are swapable. More money to spend *sigh*

I’ve got a scandal 29er I’m building up with Carbon forks. It’ll be my only mtb so I may as well make it nice. Steel is great but just heavier and having one gear is already a disadvantage so why have something heavy. Went for scandal over inbred for that reason, that and I race ss so I want it light and stiff.

By the way the on one scandal is currently reduced to £149, so a bargin. I go it in raw finish and painted it myself.

Yep, service my pace rc38 regularly and still going well. Even change the seals myself. As the advice before, I agree. Download some instructions, take your time, clean everything and have some quality fork grease and/or oil.

Why stop at steel is my question? But yes you do want a SS. Don’t ask…….you just do. And if you live near the north east I’m trying to get some folk together.

Happy Hope chainring user. Been running one since June and it is proving tough and durable despite its lightness. Would be easily recommend.

I race mtb xc on my ss against geared competitors and I think how well you do is dependant on the type of course. My worst result came from a flat course as I was under geared. Id say if you want to get better results have a range of sprockets. Personally my goal is to enjoy the race not take it so seriously and pass as many geared riders as possible!

I came 8th out of thirty odd riders in the ne xc series if that’s any indication!

As an added bonus on-one are selling the racing Ralph 29er snake bite protection ones for £30 🙂

On-one monocoque, good looking forks and good ride characteristics but look wrong on any bike frame that has skinny tubes. Best for carbon and Alu frames. Exotic would be a good bet for the money.

Was that the racing Ralph snake bite defence ones? They have a much better sidewall making them more tubeless and lower pressure friendly. The 2.25 still weighs in at 650g. Or were you seduced by the much lighter ’tissue’ ones?

Eye witness accounts are evidence. That and he did have six EPO positives from the 99 tour found a few years later under re test. You only need to read the usada report and you’ll get all the gorey details from that. Some of those on the team were still considered clean until they testified against him and are now facing a ban for it.

Malt loaf!! Great form of carbs, gives you a more full feeling too. In all honesty you should try different things, eat what suits you and your stomach best. You can train your stomach to tolerate food if you struggle now. During 24 hr solo races I’ve eaten a mix of cereal bars, mixed nuts, gels, jelly babies and chocolate all washed down with 4:1 hi 5 drink. Not for everyone but just my method.

On one breds are loved by many and come at a good price. I’ve got a on-one scandal 29er which is the middle of being built (ss of course) so can’t comment on ride at the moment. Both have replacable drop outs for gear use or singlespeed.

I use that tensioner with no problems but mine is right up near the chainstay to ensure tension. If you look on my blog you’ll see set up advice and what it should look more like.

With the mallets you get loads of float almost 15o. They are some of the more knee friendly clipless pedals to use, so I think you could continue to use them.

I’m using Facebook page as a way of grouping you guys together so you arrange rides but please tell me if there is a better way.

Team kit is under development too and I know some will be racing next year, but getting people together near each other for rides is the main idea.
