You get the idea from everyone else. We live close to Hallam collegiate campus. Five min ride to Endcliffe park (if that) and then off road all the way to the Peak District by MTB. Some cracking road riding too, although some of the bigger roads (Snake Pass especially) need to be out very early to avoid traffic (6am and before in summer).

Some cracking road and off road riding. Easy drive to Manchester airport, London under 2 hours by train, direct trains to Edinburgh/Glasgow/South West.

Not really anything to dislike, apart from lack of big city life as others have said (would argue that’s a plus!)

Fewer high end restaurants than Leeds/Manchester/Brum if you like that kind of thing.

Which bag are you guys using for a laptop? The SQR system looks like a good option as long as will take a laptop.

Rob Hayles. Repaired my road bike to perfection and still good two years later. He also has a spray booth so can match paint to perfection if you want (obviously higher cost than repair alone)

Thanks all – will have a look at those suggestions.

Fuel EX.a.good shout. Amazingly plush for the travel, climbs well, quick on swoppy singletrack, and handles rocky stuff and small ish drops if you pick your lines a bit.

Sheffield a good shout – decent trains to London (2 hours) and good road and mountain biking very close to centre of city – Parkwood Springs, Lady Cannings and Grenoside Woods all likeable from town for man made stuff and Peak District a steady 40 min spin off road for natural stuff.

    Lots of climbing/walking etc too

May be worth checking travel insurance – current FCO advice is only essential travel to France which may invalidate any insurance.

A bad fall could get very expensive in that case (accepting it’s relatively unlikely but even so…)

Got a Vitus Escarpe VR – was about 1800 last year. Not quite in the league of some of those but goes up and down very well, despite being slightly on heavy side. Can’t go wrong for the money!

Morzine has lake swimming, good outdoor pool and good hiking from town and lift served hiking too (pedestrian passes are cheap). Nice feel to the town and family orientated with lots of other stuff like rafting etc for families nearby.

Not sure what the more sensible MTB stuff is like as only ever road biked there (which is absolutely fantastic with some great climbs and loops from town)

Any old wrist support will do – ideally one with a metal insert and not a plastic insert.

Remove the metal insert and bend it so it’s straight and holds your wrist neutral and then wear at night. May not help so get a cheap one. Hand/wrist surgery may be one of the first things to restart ‘post covid’ whenever that is.

There was a huge test push a few weeks ago of asymptomatic, not known to be infected NHS staff. Will have boosted numbers but was also to establish if well staff are Covid + and an infection risk to others – has huge implications for restarting non emergency work if staff are carrying asymptomatically as risk of infecting well uninfected patients…

Eastern Moors loop good as suggested – there’s a PDF for it if you google it…

Or Endcliffe Park out via Porter Brook and up to Norfolk Arms and then head into Lady Cannings for the Cooking on Gas and Blue Steel.

Weak evidence that masks may help when out in public although it is week. FFP3 masks only needed for aerosol generation – so anaesthetic and certain surgical procedures and certain types of ventilatory support. Total overkill for non healthcare settings.

Material masks may be a better solution as can be washed on high temps. Standard surgical masks should be discarded after each use and are non cleanable and non reusable (and contain plastic) so everyone using them will generate massive amounts of non recyclable waste…

Graph from press conference on Twitter – it’s interesting. Day on day reduction in car use for 14-15 days. Now suddenly going back up again – guess it will depend if it keeps rising as to what comes next…

Can’t think of an obvious reason why would have increased for businesses etc, unless due to further cuts in public transport meaning car use for work?

Larry – not hounding anyone – just trying to make sure info is in public domain so people can make choices – for some a bad off may be a career threatening injury.

Hand surgery society have been tweeting lots of videos saying don’t do DIY or use power tools for same reasons….

In a polite way makes no difference to me what choices are made, but a poor outcome from a bad injury due to ‘old fashioned’ treatment may make a difference to that individual. May not also but it’s a choice to make!

MoreCashThanDash have been press statement from associations released and surgeons on Twitter/Social Media but may not be as well publicised as should be.

Current guidance is non surgical treatment even if that raises likelihood of a worse outcome, then try and salvage it later if you can…

And Velocipede glad you’re OK and keep dishing out the (very sensible!) advice…

Hope this comes across as well intended and not grumpy.

Current guidance for treatment of injuries if they are NOT life threatening is no surgical treatment even if non surgical treatment is likely to lead to a worse outcome.

So if you do fall off the NHS is likely to say here’s a plaster let’s hope for the best, and if the result isn’t great it will have to do.

I work for the NHS, I am doing nothing but very, very easy rides as if I go in injured I will be told tough luck unless I need life or limb saving surgery. It really isn’t worth it.

Can see all sides of this but just popping out to ‘that quiet place’ is either OK for everyone or OK for no one?!

Guess just because people don’t normally go to these places doesn’t mean they are not aware of them….

Can argue this either way – sure everyone can find a way to justify what they are doing based on ‘someone else is doing something worse’.

Bottom line – are we all doing as much as we can? If the answer is no likely that the lockdown just goes on for longer…

May have been discussed but national guidance on treatment of injuries is now ‘don’t operate unless life or limb threatening’. Or in simple terms injuries that normally get operated on will now be treated without surgery even if there is a risk of a worse outcome. This is to reduce the burden on the NHS nationally.

Very good advice to ride steady and not push it!

Harrogate lovely but not sure 250k will go far?

Sheffield a good shout – 70 mins to brum on train and 40 to Leeds on fast trains. Money will go further in Sheffield than Leeds or Harrogate.

Slightly depends on how close you want to be to a big station.

Have a dahon. Ridden it lots on distances of up to 8-10 miles. Rides well, stiffer and easier to ride than a Brompton but doesn’t fold as small

For the money the dahons cost they are pretty bombproof.

Four day week great idea. Probably not achievable for many NHS staff, or certainly not a 32hr week.

Not sure Japan is a useful comparison? Culturally it has little in common with UK, and work culture also completely different.

Were UK trains lots better when they were publicly owned? I didn’t think so but maybe my experience was unusual and they were much better as British rail in most places.

Biggest NHS issue in short term is staff. Which won’t be fixed by money although more funding not a bad thing.

Stuff gets cancelled increasingly regularly due to lack of staff, and there are increasing rates of vacant posts which can’t be recruited to. Reasons for that probably vary from region to region (although some common ground)

No amount of money will help if you can’t get any staff

Suspect if private schools all got closed down many parents will just come up with a plan B. Overseas schools, home tuition, move abroad.

Sure private schools contribute to some of the imbalance but have to identify what the problem is that needs addressing – far more complex than just close some schools and it all gets better.

Would it help? Might. Would it be the key change needed? Not convinced. Just makes a good headline.

Clever by Apple. Five years ago 1500 pounds for phone would have been seen as totally bonkers. They have managed to make it normal (at least to some people).

COI: 180 quid Motorola. It phones people and takes pictures too!

Regardless of whether leave or remain voter it’s just bizarre that we’ve reached a point where the polls suggest the UK pops feels a load of Old Etonian millionaires are the best people to represent them and have their interests at heart.

In years to come suspect will be seen as the biggest con job ever.

Was there in June. Cracking road biking and some decent paced rides that were pretty lumpy.

MTB wise – far from great – mainly dusty farm tracks and no real singletrack. Got chatting to one of the guides who was out there with his full sus and was saying there was no point in having it as no technical riding at all

Also first direct. Can’t fault them – money if you switch, decent app, and 24/7 365 day phone support that’s UK based and is faultless.

Have had to phone them on Christmas day before due to an issue and even then they were quick to answer and help.

    Can’t fault them.

Bought a Mazda 3 for 3.8k with 44000 on it. Now up to 105000 on it so far – highly recommend. Not fancy but it works. Moves when you press go pedal and stops when you press brake pedal!

As per above – Newmillerdam nearest ok riding. Woods there and Seckar Woods and Woolley Moor can be combined to make an couple of hours. It’s very old school riding and cheeky trails rather than anything exciting by modern standards.

Castle and Star Inn in Sandal are decent pubs nearby for food.

Three acres at Shelley is very good food if you don’t mind a drive but not cheap.

Not the most slack and long but can recommend the Vitus Escape 29. Bargain for 1800 quid.

Have ridden at bike park Wales and round peak District – climbs well enough and fantastic on descents/singletrack.

It’s a little on the heavy side but nothing that bad. Absolute bargain for the price. Even comes with decent tyres set up tubeless.

Went to Buca in Messini in June. Road cycling is excellent. MTB is mainly double track so not great.

Really good guided road rides and would recommend.
