I knocked this up the other week – it’s my old 1992 Kona Fire Mountain with a set of Cowbells and bar end shifters. Did a 15 mile bimble on it this morning. More by luck than judgement it all seems to work.

Old Sarum today. Taken from the hill overlooking the airfield as I finished my ride.

Makes up for her non-appearance at the airshow a few weeks ago when she had to turn back with a suspected fuel leak

Time it right and I’ll lop it off in the shop for you for a cake!

thanks for the offer CFH, I might take you up on that. It could be 2 cakes if you bang in the star nut that I found lurking in the bottom of the original delivery box last week :) . Just about to throw the box out after 16 months and this little package fell out which I hadn’t noticed was in there d’oh ! I’ll re-use the hed-doctor on something else.

I’ll sneak into his garage and take a hacksaw to it whilst he’s asleep.
You’re going to need a bigger saw! It’s a MONSTER!

Don’t exaggerate! It’s only 5cms. I’ve kind of got used to it :).

Should I do the deed freehand, buy one of those fancy guides or just bolt on an old stem above it and use that as the guide?

It’s on my ‘to do’ list – honest.

I bought a hacksaw about 9 months ago and put it somewhere safe (must be in the garage somewhere). Rest assured – when I do cut the skyscraper off, I’ll make sure you know :)

The cambium was my brother’s who didn’t get on with it. Not sure that I am at the moment !

I’ve just had something similar to the OP from Planet x.

Got home to find my one box delivered with my stuff in (handlebars, brake levers etc) and a whole pile of other stuff including a delivery note which had nothing to do with me – this pile of stuff (clothes, note etc) was inside my box.

I’ve contacted PX who said they really appreciated me contacting them and could I please send it back (free return). It’s off back tomorrow. I did reply and say that if they were that really really really appreciative, my project bike needs a set of black midge bars :). Think that bit fell on stony ground though :)

    Where are you Brassneck?

I spent sat and sunday on the hill by my house over looking Old sarum. Shame the Vulcan didn’t make it but the B-17, Mustang, Spit and Hurricane put on a good show.

There’s a bunkhouse in Nafferton (my home village). Naff also has 4 pubs and a fish and chip shop (not always open). It is also on the Way of the Roses route.
Haven’t been there for a few years so can’t vouch for the pubs. good pubs in Thixendale, Pocklington – the Wolds cycle route goes through about 47 villages so lots of pubs.

I’d do the Yorkshire Wolds Cycling route.

150 mile circular route around East Yorkshire.

I might be slightly biased as I grew up around there though.

My vote, like many others is Highlander 2.

I really liked the first Highlander, possibly because I was looking down on the battle scene between the clans when climbing in Glencoe.

Say what you like about TopGun, but it’s brilliant when dubbed into Japanese ! :)

not that it matters if you know your stoat from a weasel

    That’s easy:

One’s weasily identified and the other is stoatally different :)

Well I like pottering on my Kaff. I’m currently running 28mm Durano Plus tyres on it (although not in this photo taken last year when I just built it).

I bought my blue Salsa Vaya to replace my blue cdf.

4 months later SWMBO still hasn’t realised that this change has taken place :)

Another way of getting close without paying. Taken from a baby Cessna in 1999 :) The whit object is the wing.

Unfortunately I have to travel the A303 quite often. The longbarrow roundabout is a disaster. Lane discipline is none existent.

I tried to put some Marathon Plus’s in. I think they were 35mm or might have been a bit bigger . The front wasn’t a problem, but the back was.

Currently running 28mm Durano Plus or 28mm Panaracer Tourguard Plus’s and can fit SKS mudguards with these on.

    Do what I do.

Put them in the back of the garage with all the other ‘mistakes’ :)

I’ve never tried to fold them – I figured that if they were delivered from Wiggle/where-ever as big round objects that’s the way they should stay. Hence why I never sent my Marathon Plus’s back to Wiggle as the parcel size would be too large for the free return service.

I’ve got Durano Plus (wired) in 28mm flavour on my Kaffenback. Seem pretty bombproof to me. They seem to cope okay with the odd bit of gravel track.

Good to see your now traditional stack of spacers in there!

In my defence, that’s how it came. I’ve only fiddled with the gearing so far :)

Taken yesterday. How embarrassing. I’ve just realised that i still have the reflectors on the wheels.

I have a bike with STIs (10spd 105s) and an XT trekking chainset (48/36/26). It’s a popular combination.

Convert – what front mech is that working with?

    jerrys

OCB – don’t think you can put a smaller 28T inner chainring on the front. The R563 bcd for the inner ring is 92mm. That’s why I put the 5703 on, which has a smaller bcd of 74mm, allowing smaller than the standard 30. I picked my 5703 crank up cheap from Ribble as they are now old stock with the move of 105 to 11sp and double only on the 5800 series..

Would it [also] be Black Kona and a Blue Salsa by any chance?

    No, both blue :)

I have my [brand] newly built Salsa Vaya right up alongside my 1992 Fire Mountain, and scarily the frames look very *very* similar. Funny how it goes eh?

Funny, I also have a brand new Vaya and a 1992 Fire Mountain !

    Why not a Kaffenback?

    Mine takes 28mm with guards.

A small thread highjack: my work have just announced C2W is open again via cyclesolutions (therefore budget unto £1000). I’m looking at an “adventure bike” mainly for commuting the 20-odd miles to work via a mix of B-roads and country lanes. I’m also considering some longer distance overnight trips. Must be comfortable, mudguard ready and have disc brakes.

fandango – hijack of a hijack. I have a Genesis CdF size 56 which would probably suite you if you are the right size. It will be going for a lot less than £1000. I appear to have bought a Vaya :)

My thought process has totally stalled.

Still keen on something with better clearance than the CdF for light off road adventures (e.g. Escapade or similar). But which frame to keep for road/audax stuff – Kaff or CdF?

I bet I’ll still be deciding this time next year!

Simonbarnes = what’s the tyre clearance like on the TdF?

    jerrys

I built one last year. It currently has a 48/38/28 road triple on it, full mudguards and 28mm durano plus tyres. Seems to ride fine to me, but I’ve got nothing to compare it to except my CdF which is also no lightweight, I only paid £129 for the F & F :)

Genesis were meant to be releasing a carbon fork for pre 2015 model CdF’s. Not seen anything about it though.

I thought that they meant the 2015 fork would be available to fit to pre-2015 models – unless I misunderstood.

What’s a disc trucker like on bridleways and gentle off road stuff? I’m beginning to resent the lack of clearance for bigger tyres on my Genesis CdF and thinking of building something else up. I’ve got a Kaffenback 2 for road stuff so don’t want anything which would be too similar. vaya looks good but the 2015 frame at Charlie the bikemongers looks a bit spendy for my budget.

I’ve got a Stronglight 28/38/48 and 11-32 cassette on my Kaffenback 2. I’m thinking of putting it onto my CdF.

With a road triple (52-39-30) I found myself looking for lower gearing.

So what gearing did you end up with?

    jerrys
    Free Member

Well that didn’t work. Went for some 38mm Marathon Plus. Width wise they were no problem, unfortunately depth wise they were far too big. I put the front wheel back in and it was feeler gauge clearance under the front crown. Would it be a similar problem if I went down a size or two? I know 28mm Panaracer Tourguard Plus fit no bother, but are Marathon Pluses deeper?

I’ve joined the beardy wierdy brigade and use a carradice saddlebag and a frame mounted pump.

i also carry 2 tubes and puncture repair kit (wiltshire flint is terrible stuff)
    garmin etrex
    map
    chain tool
    hex spanners
    camera
    phone
    credit card
    £10 note

yes I know I can probably carry less but I’m training for longer rides :)

+1 for a Carradice saddlebag, but with an SQR mounting.

I’ve been looking at these Oxford Bike works bikes recently. They seem to be very well thought out, with the spec based on what actually works, rather than what is fashionable. Customisable as well.

I’ve looked at these in the past and keep coming to the conclusion that I could make something very similar with my 1992 Kona Fire Mountain (which currently has v-brakes, bar ends and an ahead stem) for not very much money.

on my 3rd surly. started with a 56cm to small, then a 60cm, pinched, now a 64cm perfect.

    would love a genesis.

That’s quite a difference in size between the Surlies (if that’s the plural of Surly). Personal question here :) How tall are you? Inside leg?

So you reckon a Tour de Fer is ‘better’ or because its British?
