DMR revolver on 717 seem pretty bombproof
I personally would look out for some Phil wood hubs, think the kiss off is the rear one and build those onto 717's or so.

    Don't know about that.
When you park you cannot take key out until you put the gear selector in park.
Park means the gearbox is locked and car is not going anywhere.
    Still worth using handbrake though..

There used to be thing called kick down, which changed down a gear if you floored the accelerator.
Modern auotos are a bit smarter and pick a gear for you depending on how hard you are pressing/ load/ speed etc..
Most have a sports setting, I just leave mine in Economy mode.

    Talk to them.
    Or bang on wall.
    One of those is correct..

Tuck your left foot under your seat to start with, classic mistake is to try to dip the clutch as you stop, only to find it is actually the brake.
You prob only do this once..
Other than that – modern advice is to us the gears so don't just leave in drive.
Coming up or down a steep hill put in 2nd for instance.
Very steep country lane – poss 1st.
Also using the gears give you engine breaking, which with most autos you do not have in drive.

A magic gear is what you need.
This is the gear combo that means a chain will just fit with no tensioner and the right amount of tension.
Been running an SS old marin for years with no problems.
Measure the distance between the dropout and the centre of the BB and google magic gears where you will get a calculator to give you an idea.
Chain stretch is an issue – a new chain vs an old stretched chain is worth one link.

For my marin, a new chain would be tight with 34*16 so a little over geared, after a week of riding tesnion would be perfect.
After a month, chain would be baggy and I could get a 17 in there to give 34*17 in there which would be perfect.

    Any questions let me know.

    Cheers

If it fits you well will be a nice bike.
A ride a steel marin of a similar age and really like it.
Nice steel and steep angles for sharp handling.
If you get it put rigids back on it.

    Interesting.
    Been thinking about this.
Cannot make my mind up if it is safe or not.
You see a lot of them taking the lifts up in Austria.
I had a flight booked for my b'day in the summer in Cham but could not make it.

Do you mean re-trace the transalp race route as many have done??
If so then rather than huts would think staying in local towns would be best.
    Look for hostels en route.
You could go expedition stylee but without a lot of kit would be boring in evening.
