best start helping them deal with it!

I think that give you two choices:

    1) stairs, or
    2) wire coat-hanger!

The reason I applied for the job is that I though it was based just down the road (outside of Oxford), which would have knocked at least 1 1/2hours per day off my commute, however it turns out the interview is in the clients offices (City center), so I’m now a little confused where the job is based (one of the first questions for the interview I think). If it is based in the City center then it’ll probably be a longer commute than I’ve got now :(

Any journey I’ve had into Oxford takes an hour. I reckon the quickest on average would be cycling straight down the A40, You’d want a shower when you got there.

Thanks Yeti, I’ve added ‘is there a shower’ to my list of questions, but it looks like it’ll all depend on where the job is based then (if I’m offered).

    Thanks again.

Thanks All, I live in Witney and have an interview in the center next week. I’m not sure exactly where the job is based (one of several locations around the city / area) or if parking is available, but will find out in the interview. I’d like to be able to cycle to work a couple of days per week, but my job involves site visits (so not always possible).

I’m currently commuting 50 miles in about an hour and don’t really want to swap that for a commute of 20 miles in the same time (my fuel is currently paid!).

I’m trying to work out possibilities so that I know what to ask in the interview.

most local’s commute via goat (or donkey if you live in Whitney)

Where can I get a donkey?

TRAIN-TRIP! (Although It doesn’t have the same ring to it!)

How about getting the train somewhere with some proper hills (Scotland, Wales, Lakes etc), find a B&B and just ride!

True, I just find it fascinating that fashion plays such a large part in it. There is (apparently) loads of time and money spent on frame development yet all the companies come up with the same solution!

No point, I just realised that the curvy down tube seems to be the current vogue among the DH frame designers, although I can’t imagine it’s the lightest and strongest solution (although I may be wrong).

Just take it easy for the first couple of runs and gradually get quicker as you learn the track. The road drop isn’t as big as it looks so just go for it!

    I’m currently enjoying:

break a mirror, roll the dice
run with scissors through a chip pan fire fight
go into business with a grizzly bear
but just don’t sit down cause i’ve moved your chair

This thread has made me a little uneasy as my frame is currently off being powdercoated :?

Thanks again guys, having discussed it with the wife yesterday I’m informed that we will be getting something similar to the below photo, which ain’t the cheap option and will need to be fitted by someone who knows exactly what they are doing (not me then).

I’m now trying to decide if we go back to option 1 or go with a variation of option 3, which would be to rip out whats there and make good temporarily until we get the insert installed, but it does mean that I can replace the carpet and free-up a fair bit of floor space.

find something you can bear to look at everyday and not think ‘….I wish I’d done it differently…’

I think that’s going to be the key, we need to sit down and decide what we really want. I suspect it may be option 4 as the wife is getting really pished off with the current carpet.

nickjb – did you fit the fireplace yourself? If so how difficult was it and if not how much was it (if you don’t mind me asking)?

If it was me, it’d be option 1)….. do it once, do it right.

This is what I’d prefer to do, however I fear that we’ll never be in a position to be able to afford it all at once (as there’s always something else that needs doing which will drain the bank account!) and we’ll still be looking at an ugly fireplace and hideous carpet in another 3 years time!

I’ve been looking at options and am unsure what we should do. In order to replace the fireplace we need to also replace the floor covering (this needs doing sooner rather than later) and re-plaster the area behind the current brickwork. The fireplace we ‘want’ is pretty expensive and so we can’t currently afford to replace it and the floor, so should we:

    1) Do nothing until we can afford to do it all,
    2) replace floor covering (with wood floor), but buy enough to fill gap when fireplace is replaced,
    3) rip out fireplace, block up (temporarily), re-plaster area and replace floor,
    4) replace fireplace with cheaper option and replace floor,
    5) replace fireplace and ‘put-up’ with the gap in the carpet until we have the funds to replace, or
    5) something else?

    Thanks.

The Game Fair is next week (22-24 July), but the traffic management is supposed to be better this year (we’ll see!).

Edit: Woodstock is quite pretty and has a few half decent (dog friendly) pubs if your camping withing walking distance.

Bare in mind that the Game Fair is MASSIVE and will take (at least) a full day so if your planning on doing something on the same day then your chances are pretty slim, however if your staying in the area and looking for something on a different day then it depends where your staying, however TSY’s suggestions are good (although I’ve heard some dodgy things about his house and the sick things that happen there!!)

Is anyone else unashamedly middle class?

What’s to be ashamed of? I’m university educated, go to work in a suit and own a house (or at least the mortgage), but I work hard for what I’ve got and haven’t been given anything on a plate (my parents don’t have contacts etc and worked hard too).

Are there any deals out there which I’ve missed or is my budget of about £1500 just too low for a new frame?

    JEngledow

The fact you’ve asked the question means that you want a new bike and your just trying to justify it (as I’m doing at the moment!), so just do it :)

I guess you need to decide if you want a “full on” DH bike or a shorter travel (160ish)

I think that’s the question I needed to answer and thinking about it i think I should go for the “full on” DH bike, as I’ll just be back asking what bike again if I don’t!

So I’m gonna forget about the rear hub and find a good DH bike, although my budget won’t stretch to the TR250!

What kind of riding do you want to do? “Freeride/Downhill” is a bit vague. Where will it be ridden?

I mostly ride South Wales DH, forest of Dean, Aston hill and others, I’ve also just got back from Morzine and WILL be going back at some point in the not too distant future.

    Budget?

This is where it gets properly vague as I’d like to stay nearer to £1k however will stretch quite a bit for the ‘right’ bike.

    Front travel?

    Whatever best suits the back!

the above is more the free ride end of the spectrum, which I assume you’re most interested in if you only want 160mm trave

not necessarily as I want a minimum of 160mm and will happily go for more.

Thanks for all advice so far :)
