I usally go by the stroke and weight 50mm stroke is usually around a 2.25″ stroke , and what weight you need, I’m running a 2.25 x 550lb spring on my Orange 5 14 stone , I think TFTune have a spring calculator on their web site.

I had a santa Cruz Heckler had 3 XT BB’s in the first 6 months then had the frame faced the next XT BB lasted 2 years and is now on another bike with faced frame still going strong another 2 years on.
Just put a Stainless Hope on my latest bike so sorry no experience of ceramic.

get the AM and put reducers in the 36 down to 140mm uber stiff and when you go to the Alps whip out the spacer, I run mine with a 36 set to 140 :D to slack set too 160 for most trails.
There is a big difference in the feel of 32’s over 36 I have both and the 32’s are flexi after riding the 36’s, if you never rode the 36’s you would still be happywith 32’s though.

Well had a quick blast round Llandegla rides well , had to adjust a few things on the way round, still needs a tweak of the front disk tick tick tick gets annoying :D climbs well and goes down the hills quite nicely, kept running out of gears so may change to a 36 up front and go 1 x 9 I’m sure I have an old e-13 chain device knocking round will just need a BB bracket :-)

I noticed a similar feeling on my Nomad when dropping from 160 to 130 never tried 100, and on my 5 it feels the same when dropping to 130 from 150.

My friend recently had to wait for a 32 ring because the bike shop said the 34-36 would not fit because of the clearance when dropping down to granny ring, if I’m wrong I’m sorry.

1 x 10 on a 34 up front has been my personal fav set up , 32 spins out too easy and 36 for me can get a bit tiring on big rides with tons of climbing, my 5 does pedal better with a 36 upfront don’t know why but something feels better . :D I run a 36-11 at the back.

Trek Remedy nice bike put a 36 up front, Nomad also good, Alpine felt a bit lifeless to me but was on a demo so not completely setup, last time I went to the Alps I had a SC Heckler coil DHX-5 out back and Coil Lyric up front handled most stuff fine, the guide said it was a nice XC bike for the Alps 8O when I came home it needed new swing arm pivots, BB, wheel bearings and the Lyric had blown something inside and the Avid code rear caliper never worked again :D but the best fun I’ve had in a long time.

Not done it myself but people seem to ride all sorts of bikes from hardtail to DH , a couple of people I know have done it on 150/160mm bikes , I was thinking of having a go on my 5 at some point as you say just to tick it off as one of lifes mountain bike challenges. :D

You can’t run the 5 with a 36 or 34 in a double only a 32 , I’ve run mine with a 34 and 36 in a 1×9, 1×10 set up, there is not enough clearance to drop down to the granny ring, had the same problem on my SC Heckler.

Longer stem will slow the steering a tad and stretch you out maybe back to being uncomfortable again, what size frame do you have? :-)

    Jeffus

I’d go medium, if I remember they are only around 22″ TT, 50mm stem inline seat post it will be awesome.

32 up front 11-36 out back is great any where :D I’ve tried 34 and 36 upfront ok for shorter rides , but lots of climbing hurts after a few hours.
