99% on my own, like to ride with others but usually just ride at short notice when I have a spare moment…

I’ve run a standard kevlar bead 2.25 Advantage for 3 years on stans no problem , its just started to go in the side walls so its been replaced with an Ardent,
Scary in the wet compared to the Advantage 😀

Only had one puncture in 3 1/2 years and that was a 3″ slash in my brand new Ardent 🙁 during an event, of all the times to have my first, been using Stans Flow rims and sealant.

I run a 36 up front and a 36-11 out back seem to be able to climb most things, 😀

An Orange P7 with a 30.9 seat tube for me would be an ideal steel hard tail, I really liked mine , and it would have been perfect with a dropper post, I would still have it if I hadn’t lost my job and needed to pay the bills 😥

    Yes 44mm Brant,its a good standard , for taper and 1 1/8″ ,

I also think you should be building a steel full sus 150mm travel around the Summer Season geometry, single pivot with a link 😀 73mm BB with ISCG mounts and 30.9 seat tube , with a Float R, Oh and a 142 x 12maxle back end, 😀 sell it for £699 😯

Float 36 , I had a Lyric on mine in the Alps really helped having a strong fork up front to give me confidence to push on some of the trails,
the head angle on the Heckler is around 69degs with a 140 fork and I think it is nearer 68 with the 36’s / Lyric, slack is good in the Alps 😀 my build below, coil shock was a good improvment on the Heckler.
Plenty of people say they ride over there fine on 100mm hardtails etc , but I found the limits of the Heckler on some trails, glad I had the big fork, get some dual ply tires and spare brake pads 203mm disc up front.

    A2C of the Talas 32 150 521mm, A2C of the 36’s set to 160 545mm

    24mm difference.

same bike with 150 talas 32 and RP23 , climbs better goes down hills fine, but the 32 can feel flexy compared to the 36’s in more challenging terrain, I’m 90Kg+ so maybe that makes a difference 😀 pushing hard into corners I could feel the front end didn’t always track as well.

Go Float 36 set up at 140 great handling on the 5 , 160 is horrible on ordinary trails, below mine set up a 160mm felt awefull spoilt the handling, 🙂

My old Nomad 32.8lb really great bike only sold it when I lost my job,

cruzheckler they are a great bike for all round riding fine for xc only bike that would keep up with my mates who are fitter far better riders than me on thier ooober light Xc bikes, I’m riding a Butcher now, has a similar feel to the Nomad wish I still had my DHX5 coil Push’d shock to try on the Butcher.

I would check for play , holding each end of the crank arm try to rock them against the axle/bearing should be no play, to me sounds like they are on the way out, I would change them while the bike is being serviced,if the bearings are rough they will eventually have play in them. You can pick them up fairly cheap around £20 for Shimano.

Stroke stays the same, only the eye to eye is reduced drops BB and slacker , just need to check rear wheel clears frame, running some on a Santa Cruz Butcher just tweaked it to how I like it, noticed a very slight strange movement when peddling slowly but nothing major.

I used the 115bhp Traffic LWB for two years did 60k miles in it, had no problems was a 2008 model 6 speed air con electric windows cd player, etc drove well and gave pretty good mpg around 40mpg , used for 99% work and 1% biking 😀 would have another.

I’ve just swopped my 5 for a santa Cruz Butcher , climbs well and doesn’t feel too big a bike, but will be more maintenace in the end 8 bearings instead of 2 but I wanted to change after 2 years on a 5 ,
you can still xc on a big bike just needs a bit more effort.

I’m 5’9″ had a large Heckler for two years didn’t get on too well with it changed to a medium Nomad perfect , now have a medium Butcher again perfect , I also had a large Superlight for 6 months its like a wet noodle compared to the heckler, but a quick ride, if it was stiffer I would have another.90Kg+ rider 😀

Never cracked a hub shell myself and I have 3 sets of wheels with Hope Hubs , all my bikes have Hope seat post QR never had a problem,

BB’s 3 years in no problems still smooth, brakes are 4 years old just had my first very minor problem which they have sorted ,

I’ve just bought a set of Tech 2Evos with cool red ano floating discs and another set of Hope Hoops will be coming shortly in 29er flavour, Hope gear is great for me and with the service I have recieved will go on buying their products.

Thanks everyone for your input, the wife says NO I will be killed, crushed etc.. so I’m saving quitely for a road bike 😀 and see where it takes me, seems £900 could build me a nice 2nd hand bike, I’ve been looking at a couple of Giant Defy carbon frame and forks on fleabay and they look quite nice a 105 groupset of Merlin and some quality wheels would make £900 build achievable. Thanks again., 🙂
