Lots of flooding round the coast here on the Wirral.

Yep, no big deal from a fitness point of view. More about skills and safety IMO.

So his “mates” just continued riding on despite this happening??
Surely more likely they carried on to the top, and waited – then someone else found him before they came back?

As tbh that’s what would happen with our MTB group, although if he was a Roadie..

    ^ This.
    He was on an MTB.

Shiny pebbles gotta be Cannock; never been a fan.

A mate of mine who I was riding with today knows the guy who found him.
He didn’t come off and injure himself, apparently he was feeling rough for the first part of the ride and was dropped my his mates going up the hill and he keeled over (coronary?) and died.

    Very sad.

Jonba, where are your hands on the bars? Tops, hoods, drops? This makes a difference to how the bike handles in the corners, I find the hoods give the most control.

It’s completely relative, what I earn and where I live I feel pretty well off. But put me in Central London and that would be pretty different.

What’s your current salary and what’s the new package and where do you live?

    85%.
Surprised by that as I’m not a ‘real’ northerner, but the indoctrination must have worked 😉

I borrowed an El Grapo for a trip to Scotland to ride all of the 7 stanes a couple of years ago. I was impressed with how well it performed all round, climbed we’ll for a big bike. I had an intense 6.6 the year before that that climbed like a pig in comparison.

I still think it’s overkill for most trail riding in the UK, if you’re building a bigger bike for bike parks or the Alps then yes, otherwise I’d look elsewhere.

Do the full off road route, over the old coach road etc….
    Nav is easy, we’ll signposted.
    You’ll enjoy it.

I cycle to work rather than drive for environmental reasons, it actually costs about the same to ride as it does to drive as I have to pay to get the ferry across the Mersey every day.
Makes me feel a bit better about my impact on the planet, however I often feel that it’s a waste of my effort as I’m in a very small minority. Obviously it makes me a better MTBer commuting so much, double ‘win’.

Scandal, fastest trail bike I’ve ever ridden.

That’s an issue I wrestle with, the problem being that you get better spec for your money with an off the peg full bike.

Especially with some brand likes Canyon that seem to manage ridiculously high spec builds for the price.
Having said that my last 4 bikes have all been built myself (except my cx bike).

I have a boardman cx that I’ve upgraded the brakes and running a pair of stans ironcross wheels and it’s great.
Old wheels have commuting tyres on.
Works out at about a grand.

    Crests on mine.
29er hardtail (scandal), I’m not heavy so wasn’t/not worried about having the lighter of the stans options.

Make your choice dependent on your preferred riding terrain/style. I don’t ride downhill or big jumps so crests seemed like the right choice.

Cheers SiB. To be honest I’m quite enjoying the trails here, no big climbs but some nice singletrack if you go looking for it.

Spend a lot of time over there – with the in laws at west kirby. Good for my bird watching! Never taken my bike. The stuff in caldy woods looks good. Looks like some kids (?) we’re building a few berms during summer. Looks good for CX round there too – linking stuff up with the Wirral way.

I’ve found loads of stuff in west Kirby, caldy and Stapleton woods. Short and sharp climbs and some nice technical stuff too. Drop me a message next time you’re over with the in laws if you fancy some company.

Cheers guys, there’s a group of us heading off to Degla on Saturday AM to do the red/black circuit plus a longer loop out of the forest to worlds end, horseshoe etc if anyone fancies joining us?

Plenty of cheeky ‘bridleways’ around where I am in West Kirby.
    Anyone else?

As Oregon29 says, you’ve got a higher wind chill factor on the bike. Especially when you’re coasting going downhill, you don’t really get that on the MTB as your constantly ‘working’.

    I run 32 front and 11-36 back.
Best decision I made building the bike. Wouldn’t go back to double / triple.

IMO it’s OK, ridden most of the trails round the forest with a mate of mine who lives locally. I think there’s better places to ride but it’s worth a visit to tick off the fact that you’ve done it.
Last time I was there the main trial (FTD) was pretty cut up with stutter bumps everywhere, not sure if they’ve resurfaced this (someone else can tell you on here). I’d avoid the main trials for that reason, there is loads more on the rest of the chase though (does require a bit of local knowledge though).

Is this thread just a thinly veiled excuse to drop in how many miles your doing on the road?

It “demands attention”. This thread would suggest the seller is right.

I’ll bid once it’s got going.

You could build an one one 29er scandal with some Rock shox Reba’s.
A sensible build will come up under the build weight suggested.
Some hope on stans rims, I have some iron cross on my cx bike theat would work well on my 29er if I wanted to run some thinner ‘road’ tyres.

Sounds good Tang and good tip off about the Cannock race Benji.
I’ll be in for both of those.

I think there’s a ceiling on how much more growth can be swallowed up by the roads of Britain. Already we’ve seen a lot of backlash against the proliferation of organised races/sportives around Surrey (Box Hill in particular).

I did up until quite recently ride on the road a lot, but the attitude of other road users had got a bit too much and I think this has got worse in the last couple of years. I’d put this down to the growth in number of roadies out there, whether certain road users are annoyed by the increase in numbers, I’m not sure.

Anyway, it’s made me realise that riding MTB (first love) and cross is far better in every way and numbers in the uk are still low. Head away from degla, cannock and ladybower and the trails are in the most part empty. Most of my big rides lately have been punctuated with a handful of riders over 5 hours. My local trails are always empty apart from the usual dog walkers.

I have a flow that I don’t use, DM me if you’d like to buy it off me.

BTW I think it’s an effective training tool if you like to train by numbers, I commute daily now so not have the need any more.
