i would guess that it was a discount or something like that.

doubt you could fit much of a cx tyre in the rear of that track bike

cinelli/mash make a singlespeed cx frame – not carbon but light. and over-priced. http://goo.gl/BKDy0

i think felt do one too, again alu though

i don’t race/don’t ride chaingangs etc so this is a very untechnical approach, but there’s a few things i think are useful..

get good at climbing hard (get strava..) – i don’t think it’s the best way to get a fast overall speed, but when you do those hills at a more measured pace later, it seems a lot easier to recover if you’re used to being totally shagged at the top.

don’t finish the effort up a hill until you’re back to your target speed (i.e. 20mph) then recover at that

in the same way, don’t let yourself go under that speed on the flat unless you’re into a very strong wind or something.

but basically just go hard all the time is my main advice.

i don’t think it is _too_ hard, but it will be tough! the sarenne descent is really technical too, should be good.

The penultimate stage is believed to be an uphill time trial to Semnoz
Surely that would suit Wiggins? His performance in other hill climb style TT’s has been very good. He’s better at doing hills that way, at a steady pace, rather than having to try and deal with attacks from folk.

contador can do that too, and he’s far better on the proper hills

those scenes are separated in the full film, supposed to be different bikes. there are however plenty of other continuity errors throughout! it’s really pretty awful.

was kind of surprised at how much it promoted shit riding, though it would be a pretty crap film (or crapper, anyway) if it didn’t.

they all wear helmets too, weird.

i put the saddle on my shoulder, but it’s probably not very good for it and the front wheel sometimes hits stuff and knocks you off balance. but it’s the most comfortable for me

The biggest reason for discs on a road/commuting bike is the low maintenance and longer wheel life. I can’t see why you’d need more power than it takes to skid out for any other reason.

    yep and yep

weight is the only reason i can see to change current road brake setups, though i doubt hydraulics is the way to go for that?

    Steep!

This required an instant detour off the main road when driving past in the van.

    hah!

it’s rare that a steep hill looks like anything in streetview.. that one looks insane.

60d gives 60fps at 720p and has no issues with your lenses, it’s probably your best bet for performance and price. a good tripod, loupe/eyepiece for the lcd and a follow-focus might be other useful considerations, but costs can rack up quickly.. you can do a lot on the cheap though, http://cheesycam.com/ covers a lot of diy and ebay options

i got given one of these last winter http://www.rapha.cc/winter-jersey – not waterproof but i’ve ridden it all day in the rain and it’s kept me warm – in my experience i get wet anyway so it doesn’t make much difference.. insulation is more important.

i wear it with a merino base and it’s great in near-freezing.

    but it is pretty pricey.

i think bending your arms properly helps, you shouldn’t be straight-arming it

try your saddle flatter if you don’t normally. i actually have mine with the nose one step up

    and ride more.

i thought 580 would be plenty wide enough, coming from road bikes.. it’s not really though, felt pretty out of control – 660 i think mine are now which is fine.

    jeffcapeshop

it’s really not. dull as shit.

maybe i’m just not particularly fine tuned to the differences – it feels fine. i haven’t noticed significant vibration but that doesn’t mean there’s not more than on something else.
It’s perhaps a little much to expect it to be hugely “comfortable” if it’s also faster/racier/etc, but i can certainly ride it for long periods of time without issue. imo that’s probably more to do with fitting (not that i have ever been professionally fitted mind) than much else.

my main advice for comfort would be better bib shorts.

i do, and i like it a lot. it feels like they all do though, i can’t say i’ve ever sat on a carbon bike and felt that it was particularly more comfortable than any other one.

yeah you can watch it again now http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/2012/live-video/p00w2zws (06 at the bottom) – looks like a crappy start rather than mechanical, though from the above rules that probably wouldn’t matter anyway (tightening defect)

so maybe a saveable fall, (maybe not!) but certainly not just a dive cos his start wasn’t as perfect as it could have been (which was what it sounded like in the interview!) doesn’t sound so much like a rules issue now, to me.

thanks for the rules! i wonder if a “dive” is a bit of a grey area? or legal but frowned upon etc?

watched that interview a couple of times – there’s a few glances between hoy and kenny..

is “restart after a fall” a definite then? what if you take a dive?

    jeffcapeshop

that seems.. an odd thing to admit to!

anyone know the official rules for when you can restart?

i love vino, very glad he won – frankly don’t care if he has doped in the past. he’s old, hard working, been unlucky recently and always makes it interesting. cav would have been good, but it’s great to see him win out over careful team calculation.

    pace yourself!

yep! don’t go into the red unless you can judge how much you have left to the top (assuming you don’t want to do anything once you’re up there)
or if you know the climb shallows out a bit you might sprint up a steep section and recover when it gets more gentle. but it’s all about knowing how much you can get away with before you’ll blow up in my experience. you’ll get a better time steady at the edge than if you go too hard too early – as long as you know where your “edge” is..

they do have sales now and then..

    my advice – birthdays!

i think it is over priced, but i’ve not really seen anything that compares either..

if a man on a bicycle is enough of an unknown quantity to disrupt an entire training exercise, i don’t hold out particularly much hope for their longevity in the field.

he has an excellent team and is clearly fit.. but we’ve not really seen anything particularly spectacular.. which imo you need for a tour win. then again he hasn’t needed to, and being a tt beast helps. seems in with a good chance but i don’t think evans for one will make it easy. he looked pretty good in the dauphine too

a corner throws you out – you don’t want to lean the bike into a corner too far, or it will slip – so moving your body into the corner while keeping the bike more upright should mean you can turn the corner faster – that wrong?

no idea what i actually do mind.. just “turn the corner” i suppose.

    jeffcapeshop

**** faster when it increases your likelyhood of changing tubes at the side of the road – i bet if you add it all together you ended up going slower overall with your lighter tyres.

also you might well have some luck with the weather tomorrow i reckon, doesn’t look too bad (wed seems “definitely wet”)

well i have to say that doesn’t sound _very_ promising.. maybe reserve judgement until you’ve gone down a bumpy hill on it.

you don’t need to go fast downhill.. going up is when it matters.
