sounds very much like it’s not actually opening the valve to the tube and the pressure is in the pump only. i’d check the valve in the tube moves. if in doubt, let all the air out of the tube and see if it pumps at all.

    LMAO

This really brings home how insane it is.. hard to tell when you are watching the competitors.

i found it much more scary to watch than the others.

do you actually have to ride, or can you run up with a bag full of bits?

does “natural tracks” mean animal/walking tracks, or just unsurfaced/landrover style?

I couldn’t work out the pole cover thing first time so i just didn’t bother.. haven’t noticed any issues in rain

Has been fine on pretty sharp rocky ground (not so much for comfort) with no additional groundsheet, though that’s something i would risk for reduced bulk/weight anyway.

Sidewall damage will kill it within 2-3 weeks of hard riding.

Are tubeless setups inherently worse than a similar setup with a tube for sidewall failure?

Josh scratched, broken linkage.. should have ridden ss

seems like (as much as you can guess from dots) josh needed a forced refuel, that would be my take – otherwise you’d do your best to stick to him..

i know from experience that tom is not easy to stick to, nor does he need to refuel!

I once switched hand position from flats to hoods and completely missed on one side. Fell but it was at the top of a hill so not at speed. Perfectly possible to fall with no obvious cause though! Maybe you stood up to push it a bit and the wheel slipped a bit in the wet.

Any porkers finding their medium top a little tight and wants to swap it for my large (the £4.99 one) please let me know.

it’s not possible to “just take the space” safely unless you are going 20mph+ which you have already established is a bad idea when dealing with tram tracks

Probably all cycle traffic being diverted onto George Street though that’s not perfect at present.

ignoring how ridiculous the george street arrangement is, it’s in between the most challenging sections for bikes anyway

my favourite bit of town centre bike routing is the bit down from the mound where you are encouraged to mount the pavement, ride through tourists then into a single lane of fast moving buses. I would do it anyway, but i’m glad they put little pictures of bikes there too.

Don’t know if they’ve changed it since the incidents in question but haymarket you’re actually supposed to swerve left into the station then wait at the lights – no-one does that of course, it’s shit, but the alternative is to swerve across traffic as it takes of from the lights which isn’t always so popular.

The tracks at going up from princes street are probably worse, you need to stay way left then swerve into the road to get over them, sometimes traffic is trying to pass you at that point..

dunno what the solution is though, other than ditch the shitty trams, that would work.

i’ve successfully (lasted about a year) glued a patch from old shorts on the inside of long tights – i think i used “extreme power glue” but anything decent along those lines would do. Used quite a lot and left it with a weight for a few hours. Make sure to protect the other side or you’ll glue the whole leg together..
Works if the aim is to stay warm rather than look pretty.

Are there any other (read dodgy chinese) head units that would work as-is with the ay-up battery?

to solve the on/off problem without a cache battery and to let me have the phone in my pocket etc, i used a standalone battery charger and a spare battery (obviously only works if your battery is easily replaceable) – it was quicker to charge too.

i cycled through montenegro/kosovo/macedonia recently, so not quite the same but i’d expect similar conditions – roads were mostly fine with a few exceptions on smaller routes, one part had roadworks meaning no surface for a couple miles etc.. but not bad for the most part.

i found trucks to be reasonable, most beep (to let you know they’re passing – that might be fairly close at times but i didn’t feel at risk). Vehicles will overtake each other coming towards you which is disconcerting, and will pull out from side roads as if they haven’t seen you (but seemed to do that with any traffic really – if they can get a nose in, they will go) so anticipate both and you’re fine.

100 a day should mean you have plenty time for either bike though i’d go for the audax personally, if both have skinnies then it doesn’t make any difference anyway.

i once solved a complicated problem with a database i’d been stuck on all day while rolling down the hill back home knackered in the dark, that was pretty good.

is it for mtb or road?

If road, and if you don’t already have a light, you might want to consider the luxos u, which is a decent road light plus usb out. it’s around £80-90 i think though. Only worth it if you need the light anyway.

Erm…. Would you like to expand on that last comment. I fear you may be labouring under a misapprehension.

don’t worry – i just mean i ride aggressively and dickishly to be safe when just going about town – i know i’m not required to stick in the bike lane but if i’m setting out on a road ride i sometimes can’t be arsed with the hassle of dealing with angry drivers

cheers all – yeah i usually would be in the middle of the lane too, was on my road bike though and tend to be a bit more law abiding on that for whatever reason.

Was a stagecoach bus – usually find lothian buses are pretty reasonable for the most part.

the “Beware” signs are fine i think, they do remind you that it’s a long and nasty truck that can squish you

I have a real problem with the strike-through bike, “Do Not” etc – you can if you want, you’re sometimes forced to, and it’s often safe

so the second split he’s at 32 seconds, the finish he’s at 39 – 7 seconds lost with no tire, and i’m fairly sure most of it was on the last (smooth) section..

a bit iffy, it is that kind of fine cycle path gravel. Not a huge distance of it though.

these are a bit more expensive than the standard but have a twist open/lock kind of system which i like – doesn’t actually need to be locked when on the bike and most importantly for me, haven’t leaked so far.

was thinking about getting one of these

not seen in person though, i’m sure it’s as string like as the rest of them.

there’s a couple of even flimsier ones they do too

aha – i found i could filter the track to a max number of points and it’s now significantly faster!

I’m going to need to use this for a 2000 mile route – will i just need to make multiple low-point routes?

    jeffcapeshop

    ok, cool – 4662 points!

it did get to the end of its calculating but obviously not too convenient..

It’s a 100 mile route – someone rode it and saved it – is it possible to convert to a more useful format (trail?) or does it need to be drawn?

there’s a cycle path out which you can get on around haymarket which goes over crammond brig then up the side of the road to dalmeny then south queensferry (where it dicks about in housing estates on the way to the bridge, but is marked) then over the bridge the road east isn’t bad, but there could well be a path there too

My friend has run all this by the headmaster and he seems happy so I assume he has looked into all the relevant policies etc.

tbh i probably would not assume this.. check with him directly explaining possible issues

I would try to arrange a meeting with the relevant council members and head/designated teacher before doing anything else to clarify exactly what’s required

it’s the front derailleur that the issue might be with isn’t it? they will be specced with a range they work within
