Lovely piece. Are you sure it has the Geneva seal though? I can’t see it.

So apparently these are now selling for near 100k. Any suggestions what I should replace it with?

Indeed. I wouldn’t get any sympathy for such a post on the watch forums so I thought I’d try STW. I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed here.

Funnily enough, I was just looking at this model today. Quite tempted.

This whole watch game has been getting out of hand recently – kind of spoils the fun to be honest. The nautilus has gone up in value so much so quickly that I hardly feel I can wear it. Likewise my vintage Rolex pieces. I think I’m going to have to shift into other brands to get some fun as the current market obsession for the pieces in my collection has been a bit silly. Looking forward to when the market drops and I can add some more interesting pieces but in the meantime I may try out some of the pieces listed in this thread.

£250 for a watch on a posh holiday which can go in the pool? I wouldn’t go in the pool with one of those – no screw down pushers. Also ‘BOSS’ does not really fit with ‘posh holiday’ from what I can see. How about an Apple Watch? I can’t think of a conventional watch which would work at that price point.

Yeah the explorers are nice. Actually some of the least pricey but still two of my favourites.

I think we did this in the watches n+1 thread. I have objectively too many but there’s always room for one more. There’s about 5 or so ‘regular watches’ – g shock, apple etc, then I have the ‘enthusiast watches’ – this is after a bit of thinning out:

    Lange sohne 1815 Chrono
    Fp Journe Chronometre Bleu
    Patek Philippe 5711 nautilus
    Rolex 5513 sub
    Rolex 16613 sub
    Rolex 1675 gmt
    Rolex 1675/3 gmt
    Rolex 1675/8 gmt
    Rolex 6610 explorer
    Rolex 1016 explorer
    Universal Geneva polerouter
    Omega vintage something or other
    Grand Seiko SBGW001
    Grand Seiko sbgw005

Most are on my IG @waspyone

For sure @oldgit, can give some pointers. Lots of nice refs from the 50s. Budget is main question, then what style? Sporty, chronograph, basic 3 hand? Gold or steel?

I dunno how to link a pic from Instawotsit.  My 6610 and most of the others are on IG under jeffcowie2   – enjoy!

    https://www.instagram.com/jeffcowie2/

I got into vintage Rolex when they were merely just expensive rather than the current crazy prices.  As lovely as the 6610 is, I’d say it’s one of the few truly undervalued vintage Rolex pieces left.

    hmm, i can relate….

    Rolex:

    Explorer 1016

    Explorer 6610

    Sub 5513

    Sub 16613

    GMT 1675

    GMT 1675/3

    GMT 1675/8

    Bunch of rolex bracelets etc

    Grand Seiko SBGW005 and SBGW001

    Patek 5711 Nautilus

    Universal Geneve Polerouter

    Lange unt Sohne Chrono flyback

    FP Journe Chronometre Bleu

A handful of others kept for sentimental reasons.  This is after a significant clearout also…

Some serious watches there Jeff. You could probably by a bike company or two let alone a bike with that lot!

    Love the Lange & Sohne.

Yeah, it gets out of hand pretty quickly. At least they can be hidden away pretty securely – some of them are now worth about as much as my first house!

I really like the Lange also, the movement is incredible but it’s very under the radar so I can wear it any time with pretty much any attire. It’s currently away for routine service which I’ve been told will be 10 weeks just to get a quote. I’m expecting the quote to be in the ‘you could get a nice bike for that’ territory….

I collect watches. Mostly old ones. If you think bikes can be expensive, I recommend not going down ths particular rabbit hole.

Nice pic MrSmith – a Lange Sohne platinum datograph. I have the Lange Sohne 1815 Chronograph which has the same movement. Truly stunning engineering and craftmanship.

I do actually own a Patek – a pretty basic one compared to what is normally associated with the brand.

I have a bunch of others – it’s just a hobby in the end. There are many reasons to buy a particular watch – history, brand, rarity, workmanship. The prices are high but in the end it’s just like collecting any other widget.

2nd kid is 18 months younger than first here. Hard work at first but once they start interacting with the sibling it’s much easier than when the first was that age. They play together like they are twins (now 4 and 5.5).

We went for number three and he was born when the 2nd one was 2 years 4 months. I wasn’t so keen to be honest but it hasn’t been a big deal. by the time you’ve had a kid, your life has changed so much for the next 20 years that there is no such thing as ‘getting your life back’. Your life has changed, accept this. You won’t be the same person again so don’t fight it. I had a great life before kids and have a great life with kids. It’s a different life but no less great.

btw I live somewhere that we can have full time help with the kids and we both work so I know this is not representative of all places. It would be much tougher if in the UK but no less rewarding (i hope…).

At the risk of being treated as a pariah – how about the pleasingly taught foil over a newly opened jar of instant coffee? – yes, I said ‘instant coffee’. Followed by the equally satisfying piercing of said foil.

Also – we’re all page 3 and no mention of ‘Fleshlight’?

What my husband describes as “itchy brain”. It’s an itch that must be satisfied by sticking my finger in my ear whilst simultaneously ‘scratching’ the roof of my mouth with my tongue.

That’s also me! Never heard it described as ‘itchy brain’ but I get the exact same thing. Weird.

No relume on sub MrSmith – this is from 1966, a short period where the lume is known for it’s toothpaste like qualities. Looks fine on the wrist except at high magnification it does look a bit untidy.

oooh, ooh, I know one (courtesy of Edmond from Peppa Pig).

There’s no such thing as a Brontosaurus. It’s really an Apatosaurus and was misidentified. This has been known for, like ages yet most kids growing up in the 70s and 80s (like me) would have continued to be fed the lie that they existed. conspiracy?

It’ll take more than an Apple Watch to displace my Lange & Sohne 1815 Chronograph….. however I do have two wrists so perhaps…

Perhaps, maybe, this is just not a things that should be opined on twitter where it is hardly the forum for a nuanced discussion of the matters at hand. hardly possible to do this in posts of fewer than 140 characters. keep twitter to posts about what you’ve just had for dinner, your excitement or upset at a current sports result. avoid discussing the arab – israeli peace process or the events leading up the current dischord in the ME. Just a thought like.

I live in Sarawak. Miri, to be precise and I kinda agree with Paladin up there ^ (I’m guessing you work on Toisa Paladin?? – I’m in the SSB subsea team in Miri). I wouldn’t come here on holiday, although I find it a nice place to live and work. It is the main route to fly to Mulu, however, which is worthwhile to go see some huge caves and loads of bats. And bugs which live on bat poo. And lots and lots of bat poo.

Anyway, nowt to see in Brunei. Pretty much avoid. Used to live there too but it’s really culturally bereft and not much going on tourist wise. The empire hotel can be nice as it’s an impressive resort but it’s hardly buzzing. And there’s a no alcohol law so not much in the way of partying.

Stick to Sabah, base yourself in Kota Kinabalu. Go diving offshore KK or head over to the other side of Sabah to Tawau, Sipadan etc. Very nice, even if you aren’t a diver. Even snorkling round there is nice.

Climb Mt Kinabalu. Stunning views and worth the hike.

Go see some small elephants and orangutans if that’s your bag. Also there’s a turtle hatching beach up there too which I sent my mum too but never been yet.

Dont expect it to be a lush jungle wilderness.. It’s pretty much all gone now except the far interior of the island. All replaced with palm oil plantations and the like. Rather sad to say the least. Likewise some of the near shore reefs are in a bad state but Sipadan is very impressive.

I’ll preface this with that I am not a doctor, physio or anyone qualified. I have also not sought professional diagnosis for my issue. I have, however, googled extensively…..

I have had I believe to be achilles insertional tendonitis for a couple of years, possibly more. It would be pretty much non existent if I stopped running for a while but as soon as I resumed, I would have morning pain which would soon abate after ‘walking it off’. if I pinched the tendon it would be very painful nearest the foot where it joins the heel bone.

I have been naturally a heel striker when I ran, however when I trained for Ironman several years ago I was advised by a coach to run on my forefoot – landing and taking off from the balls of my feet. Also with my feet landing directly under my body and leaving the ground in a kicking motion. it took a bit of getting used to and occasionally painful calves but I stuck with it and I feel that it really helped keep my legs fresh for the last leg of the Ironman.

a few years on, after lapsing back to heel striking, I developed achilles tendonitis. i tried a few of the recommended techniques with no improvement and have read many conflicting opinions on the cause and the cure. I have had great success over the past several months going back to forefoot running and this has all but cured the tendonitis I was experiencing and has also resulted in me running faster and with less pain elsewhere after the run (hips, hamstrings etc).

Tudor are basically Rolex’s version of Skoda. Same guts, better prices.

    – well to be more accurate, Tudor have ETA guts but with Rolex case etc. Still very decent watches.

    400 quid, I’d be looking for a vintage 60’s / 70’s Omega Seamaster.
