    Gosh, what did I start.

    Genuinely some really interesting answers here though, turns out I didn’t understand all this coating terminology.

    Seems I need to purchase some stuff to wash in, tumble dry and see what happens.

    anjs, I’ve never ever washed it with fabric softener, only liquid detergent like the instructions say. I will try washing it in one of the above and as per MSP’s link.

    I am by no means an adult and qualified to answer this properly, but my 3 cents are that I once saw a dad go up something steep with his baby on a seat on the back and tall over backwards landing on the baby. Not a good thing to watch!

    Hi richP, I wasn’t able to get your script to work, it works, but only for the first set of numbers.

    mancjon’s script has been working well though so I’ve been sticking with that.

    +1 for Kurt Vonnegut. Try also his classic Slaughterhouse 5. Or anything.

    Also, for a very old skool (sp) read, The Kraken Wakes by John Wyndham. It’s made me scared of going in the see and overusing the word “presently”.

    oldnpastit: the groups of numbers will never overlap.

    I have literally not even the faintest idea of perl so any sed/awk scripts would be very useful but I feel I’ve pushed it far enough already! Also, is there a way out outputting to a new file?

    Hi Aidy, I’ve never used perl before. My open line is:

    open FID, "$numbers.txt" or die "Can't open file";

    where numbers.txt is the file with the relevant numbers in. is that right?

    1 1 1 2 2 2 2 3 3 3 3 3, you should get 1 2 3 1 2 2 3 1 2 2 2 3

    There will never be less than 3 occurrences of the same number.

    tonyd, thanks for that code too, unfortunately it just seems to copy the infile to the outfile and change nothing. I’ll have a good look.

    Thanks for the replies, I’ve never really used Excel and learning this way of doing it would be more beneficial in the long run I feel.

    Wow, thanks TheBrick, that’s some impressive script, can you confirm the first for loop as being:

    for i in grep '-in 'n' $file'

    I’m not really following how we’re defining n.

    I thought you just clicked Save As… select pdf and it publishes it to that.

    Edit: Print even and select pdf from the drop down. That’s how I’ve always done it.

    £35 for that tool?! I remember the first time I took my cranks off, couldn’t for the life of me work out how, then read the instructions and realised I needed this self extracting tool. Then I looked in my toolbox and it was there.

    Perhaps if you look in your toolbox it will have found its way in like me? It comes with the cranks. Oh and you also need the funny spanner thing to remove the cups.

    And now in the time it took me to write that and reset my password for the virgin train website the price for the return to Glasgow has more than doubled to £27! To say it’s a frustrating procedure is a bit of an understatement.

    Thanks for posting this! I’ve just got my £60 return to Preston from Oban down to £37 leaving on Saturday. All I had to do it get a return to Glasgow (£11.80) and then a return to Preston from Glasgow (£26).

    Why does this system work like this?

    I never seem to find cheap tickets from Oban. Travelling to Preston this weekend and from Oban they want £60 for a return (16-25 card). I looked weeks ago and there were no advanced fairs.

    When you get off in Arrochar you should punt your ticket to someone. You’ll be quids in.

    XXXC definitely seems to be the preferred term. Not just for the hardcore hardtails niche but more for the way of life that surrounds this hardcore way of riding.

    Thanks guys for the useful comments. I think I’ll get the KMC ones but keep them unopened alongside my 9 speed ones and then if disaster strikes I’ll try the 9 speed first.

    langy – I was thinking of heading down to the Blue Mountains as we’ve got the van for 6 days, picking up Christmas Eve Morning. I reckon 3-4 hours max drive time.

    I did really Christmas on the beach, just to say I have though! Would be keen to get away from the crowds I guess.

    epicyclo – cheers – I was thinking of driving through that a bit later, I’m assuming campsites will be 10 a penny in the area?

    Wrightyson: Extremely interested in some of the tour your mate offers in the Blue Mountains – something about abseiling.

    The mrs. has already booked 2 tours with a holiday company she’s used a few times since being out there, but I need to sort out this part of the trip. How can I get guides on the cheaps?!

    She’s mostly booked everything we’re doing such as all 3 internal flights we’re taking and 2 tours on the Whitsundays and Fraser Island and apartment in Sydney and booking campervan. She’s done a fair bit but I agree with you entirely – there’s loads of time and it’ll be reet.

    Just hoping to be able to get a nice idea for a memorable Christmas somewhere nice but don’t know where to start.

    I met a great guy in the summer who is in Perth and has Wembley cycles. He was a good biker and am sure would be very keen to take you out. Sounds like there’s some good stuff there.

    Thanks for the links MrsPoddy. So according to uswitch I can pay just £233 per year. I think I need to make some phonecalls because that’d be considerably cheaper than at the moment. Also their price per kwh seem a lot lower. I think we’ve just got a bad deal plus poor boiler or something.

    Luke – I’m there. I’ll try setup some sort of UHI cycling club for monies.

    I’ve been operating a pair of Altura Night Visions for a few good years now, with a merino glove underneath for the colder days. Seems to work alright for me so far.

    Just started commuting so am keen for some more ideas as they’ve got a couple of holes in.

    Any mittens or lobster styles?

    St Andrews for me. It was excellent. Nice, small friendly place and great mountain biking believe it or not. Drank a lot in first year, played a lot of golf and made some incredible friends and developed myself in ways I didn’t know possible. I did a masters in Maths.

    Now doing a PhD with the University of the Highlands and Islands at SAMS. Have a gander if you’re after something different.

    Seemingly the inner width of the chain is the same so it’s fine to operate a 9 speed ring as I am.

    9-36 cassette? Surely that’ll require a different freehub body too?
